Emptiness Is Not a Destination

Han Qin (秦汉)

“Emptiness” may be the most frequently mishandled word in Buddhist philosophy. It is taken to mean that nothing exists, that a deeper Nothing lies behind appearances, or that ordinary concerns can be dismissed because everything is ultimately unreal.

Madhyamaka emptiness means none of these. It is not nihilism, a concealed substance, or an emotional shortcut. It is a disciplined attack on svabhāva: the claim that something arises from itself, stands through itself, or possesses an intrinsic identity independent of conditions.

SAE also denies that any construct closes on itself. But the engines differ. Madhyamaka reasons from dependence: what arises dependently cannot possess intrinsic nature. SAE reasons from occlusion: a construct becomes determinate by drawing a boundary, and a boundary necessarily leaves something outside. One begins with dependence; the other with exclusion. Their conclusions approach each other without becoming identical.

Eight Negations, One Attachment

The opening of Nāgārjuna's Mūlamadhyamakakārikā gives the eight negations: no arising and no ceasing, no permanence and no annihilation, no identity and no difference, no coming and no going. They are easily presented as four parallel dialectical pairs. But they do not function as eight blades aimed at unrelated targets. They jointly dismantle the attribution of intrinsic nature. Arising and ceasing form the root; permanence, annihilation, identity, difference, coming, and going presuppose something that first arises and persists through its own power.

Remove that root and the other extremes lose their support. Without an intrinsically arising self, there is no self-substance available to remain eternal, disappear absolutely, stay simply identical, or travel through time as an independent thing.

On an SAE reading, this operation is especially forceful at 14DD, the self as an end. Once a subject organizes action around its own purposiveness, it is tempted to convert that “I” into the final source of reasons. The eight negations do not themselves propel anyone toward 15DD, the self-legislating subject, and Madhyamaka does not secretly aim at SAE's recognition of another end. It loosens the reified center. Only after that loosening does a turn toward another become structurally available. The distinction matters: Madhyamaka performs the critique; SAE identifies one possible downstream consequence.

Refusing to Establish, or Establishing with Remainder

The Sanlun formula “refuting error and revealing the correct” does not mean replacing a false doctrine with a final true one. For Jizang, correctness lies in refusing to make any account a place of attachment. Refutation reveals the middle precisely by declining to establish a position with intrinsic status.

SAE is close to this discipline and nevertheless departs from it. It also refuses a remainderless terminus, but it holds that every negation sediments into another construct. New language, distinctions, and practices have actually appeared. Pretending that nothing has been established obscures their effects. SAE therefore does not prohibit establishment. It requires an establishment to acknowledge its remainder: to own the reality of the construct's operation without granting it final jurisdiction.

The two traditions answer the same pressure with different disciplines. Madhyamaka keeps every establishment at the level of dependent designation, denying it intrinsic weight. SAE grants constructs real constraining force while denying them closure. One refuses to dwell in what it establishes. The other inhabits provisionally and keeps the wall open to another cut.

Why the Fourfold Two Truths Do Not Return to the Start

Jizang develops the two truths through successive levels. First, existence is conventional and emptiness ultimate. Next, the opposition between existence and emptiness becomes conventional, while “neither existence nor emptiness” functions as ultimate. Then both duality and nonduality are displaced by “neither dual nor nondual.” Finally, the preceding levels are all declared pedagogical gates, leaving no object of dependence or attainment.

The third move is crucial. A simple double negation could return to affirmation: not-not-existence looks like existence again. Jizang changes the level of the target. The negation no longer applies to a term within the existence/emptiness frame; it applies to the dual/nondual frame itself. The movement therefore does not collapse backward.

The fourth move is not a fifth and higher truth. It gathers the previous ladder as teaching and lets discourse end in non-attainment. For Madhyamaka this does not point toward an ineffable entity beyond language. It deprives both path and destination of intrinsic status. SAE likewise refuses to turn closure into a higher synthesis, yet its remainder still points beyond the achieved construct toward a real but inexhaustible outside.

Both forbid arrival, for opposite reasons. Madhyamaka forbids it because there is nothing intrinsically attained. SAE forbids it because remainder never reaches zero.

The Central Seam Is Conventional Designation

Nāgārjuna's famous verse links dependent arising, emptiness, conventional designation, and the middle way. For Madhyamaka, a dependently arisen phenomenon is empty and therefore conventionally designated. Conventional things can still sustain causal practice, language, and teaching. Their emptiness does not make them inert. But their efficacy does not confer intrinsic nature.

SAE adds a claim that Madhyamaka can reasonably suspect. A construct, though dependent and non-self-sufficient, exerts real constraint. A childhood memory, a legal judgment, or a grammatical habit changes what can happen next. None is an independent substance. Yet each sediments into a topology that makes some later paths easy and others nearly inaccessible.

Madhyamaka can ask whether “real constraint” preserves a trace of the intrinsic nature SAE claims to reject. SAE can answer that the act of making and sustaining the critique is itself a real operation. If all operational constraint is thinned into designation, a constructive framework loses the ground from which continuing construction can be described.

Neither response translates cleanly into the other framework. This is not a temporary misunderstanding. It is the central seam. Madhyamaka is complete in its project of eliminating intrinsic establishment. SAE is complete in its project of constructing while preserving remainder. Each regards the other's necessary discipline as one step too much or too little.

Emptying Emptiness—and Questioning Negation

Madhyamaka finally turns the blade toward SAE's own beginning. SAE starts from Negativa, negation prior to being. Is that beginning exempt from negation? If every attempt to deny it is answered with “your denial demonstrates that negation is operating,” has SAE not created the most invulnerable svabhāva of all?

Repeating the axiom would only intensify the problem. SAE can receive the challenge because it also says that every articulation of Negativa is a construct with remainder. Negativa is not an object to be venerated, nor a proposition granted final immunity. The description can be revised, displaced, or cut even if the operation it attempts to mark cannot be turned into a stable thing.

Madhyamaka guards non-establishment by emptying emptiness itself. SAE guards provisional establishment by saying, “this text too is a construct.” They do not meet at a common destination. They share a refusal to reify destination. Madhyamaka names the gesture non-attainment; SAE names it non-closure.

Emptiness is therefore not a destination. To possess emptiness as the final answer would manufacture the very intrinsic nature emptiness undoes. To possess remainder as an unquestionable truth would expose SAE to the same danger. The hard practice is not merely to say that the world is empty. It is to refuse to make even that sentence a place to live.
