Chan Does Not Destroy Structure
Chan is often presented as an assault on structure. It transmits outside scripture, overturns conceptual reasoning with kōans, and uses shouts or blows where an argument should be. From that familiar image, Self-as-an-End—with its numbered layers and technical vocabulary—looks like exactly the kind of construction Chan would demolish.
The image does not survive contact with Chan history. The tradition is full of structures: the Three Barriers, Bodhidharma's Four Practices, the Ten Oxherding Pictures, monastic codes, encounter-dialogue conventions, transmission genealogies, and institutions of authorization. A tradition with no use for structure would not have produced so many durable forms.
Chan's distinctive target is narrower and more radical. It does not destroy structure as such. It destroys the possibility of treating a structure as a final dwelling.
Non-Abiding Does Not Mean No Construction
The instruction to produce a mind that abides nowhere does not require a blank mind. Experience forms patterns; language draws distinctions; practice establishes habits; even the declaration that there is nothing to attain becomes a construction. The danger begins when a subject treats one of these constructions as if it had no remainder and therefore no longer needed to be questioned.
This is where Chan meets SAE's conservation of remainder. No construct closes without excluding something. “Abiding” is therefore not an objective achievement of perfect closure. It is a subjective mistake: taking a construct that still has an outside for a place with no outside. Non-abiding becomes an austere operational discipline. It does not prohibit views. It denies any view immunity from another cut.
The received contrast between Shenxiu's mirror, which must be continually polished, and Huineng's “originally not one thing” can be read as two directions through the same problem. One refines an existing construction; the other turns downward and questions the surface on which refinement is supposed to occur. They should not be reduced to a slow mistake and a sudden victory. Each reveals a different motion of the chisel-construct cycle.
The genuine seam appears when Chan invokes an originally complete Buddha-nature. SAE contains no pre-given perfection waiting to be uncovered. Its structures emerge from below and every closure retains remainder. Chan can treat the ground as originally clear; SAE can only treat any claimed ground as another construct to be tested.
Why the Oxherding Pictures Still Matter
A map is especially vulnerable to becoming a dwelling, but that does not make maps useless. The Ten Oxherding Pictures move from seeking and glimpsing the ox through capture, training, homecoming, forgetting, emptiness, return, and finally entering the marketplace with open hands. Read as a spiritual credentialing system, the sequence hardens immediately. Read as a phenomenological map of changing structural pressures, it offers SAE an unusual degree of resolution.
On an interface reading, the first picture resembles a 12DD predictive system whose operations have not yet answered the question “who is predicting?” The next four illuminate the emergence of 13DD, the self, from a minimal self-marker to a more integrated regulatory position. Four more illuminate 14DD, the self as an end: purpose appears, organizes the field, then relinquishes the need to maintain itself through constant effort. The final return to the marketplace approaches the entrance to 15DD, the self-legislating subject. The practitioner returns to ordinary relations without requiring a protected setting to hold the achieved position and may now create conditions in which others can chisel for themselves.
This is an interface map, not a claim that Kuoan secretly encoded the DD sequence. Its value depends on the difference. The oxherding sequence gives extraordinary detail to the emergence and loosening of self and purpose, then compresses the turn toward others into one final scene. Yogācāra does almost the reverse: it is most precise near the higher transformation of relational topology. Chan sees finely at the cut; Yogācāra sees finely at the construct.
Sudden and Gradual Are Not Measures of Speed
Sudden awakening and gradual cultivation are often treated as competing estimates of duration. But the important distinction is not how long an event takes. It is what kind of event occurs.
Gradual cultivation adjusts a structure whose operating field is already accepted. Reactions loosen, habits change, and a new coordination becomes stable through repetition. Sudden awakening is closer to a rupture in the supporting surface. The subject sees that the position from which it has judged everything—“I stand here”—can itself be seen and negated. That rupture may occur in an instant. Whether it survives ordinary loads can only be tested afterward.
Bodhidharma's Four Practices can therefore be read as stress tests after rupture. Under misfortune, does the practitioner move back into the story “why is this happening to me?” Under good fortune, does pride rebuild the old center? Does action secretly make a home in expected reward? “Ordinary mind” is not casualness. It means that the subject does not require a meditation hall, a master, a kōan, or an exceptional mood to avoid falling back into the former dwelling.
Kōans, blows, and silent illumination then occupy different functional positions. A kōan engineers a paradox in the subject-position so that familiar reasoning cannot complete itself. A blow or shout can count as cultivation only when it preserves the other's right to interrupt and helps that person encounter their own remainder; otherwise it is merely power. Silent illumination is a practice of not settling on what appears in awareness, not a serene state to be possessed.
Who Certifies That You Have Not Settled?
Chan cannot avoid one further question: how is awakening recognized? Pure self-certification risks turning an intense event into an unquestionable final narrative. Pure external certification risks converting transmission into institutional control.
Lineage and authorization address a genuine epistemic need. A rupture in the subject's position may require recognition by someone familiar with the terrain if it is not to remain private mythology. Yet the witness cannot perform the rupture for the practitioner, and the authority to name awakening cannot become ownership of another's subjectivity. This is the point at which cultivation and colonization come closest to one another.
The deepest disagreement still concerns the status of the self. Chan's language of no-self can empty the self more completely than SAE permits. SAE insists that 13DD is a real emergent regulatory structure: not a soul, but not a mere illusion either. Translating awakening as the discovery of a “true SAE self” would betray Chan. Treating SAE's emergent self as simply an attachment awaiting dissolution would betray SAE.
What they share is the refusal to settle. Chan warns SAE that a theory of remainder can become the strongest dwelling of all. SAE warns Chan that the destruction of dwelling inevitably sediments into speech, ritual, and authority. If non-abiding is genuine, even “non-abiding” cannot be where one lives.
