The Dispute over Excluded Middle

Brouwer and Hilbert disputed what existence proofs must deliver. Their conflict changed not everyday mathematics so much as the questions mathematics could ask about its own proofs.

1. A Point in the Coffee

Stir a cup of coffee, the familiar story goes, and when the stirring is over at least one bit of coffee will be back where it began. Or take a map of the room, crumple it, and drop it somewhere inside the room it depicts. At least one point on the map will lie directly above its corresponding location.

These are classroom pictures of Brouwer's fixed-point theorem. They are not, without qualifications, statements about actual liquids or arbitrary pieces of paper. A standard mathematical version says that a continuous map from a closed ball in a finite-dimensional Euclidean space into that same ball has a fixed point: a point x for which f(x) = x. More generally, the domain can be a nonempty compact convex set. Shape and continuity matter. A rotation of a circle can move every point, so “a closed region” alone is not an adequate hypothesis.

Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer was a young Dutch mathematician when his topology helped establish the theorem. The coffee story is sometimes promoted from illustration to discovery anecdote: he supposedly saw the result while stirring his drink. Without a reliable contemporary source, that promotion should be resisted. The crumpled map is likewise an explanatory device, not a record of what happened at his desk.

Even with those limits observed, the illustrations expose an important distinction. The theorem assures us that a point exists. The assertion does not by itself supply a general procedure for calculating an exact fixed point from every continuous map. Finding an approximate point, finding an exact point in a particular example, and extracting an exact point by a uniform effective method are different tasks.

Unfolding the map and inspecting it more carefully does not settle those differences. A finite inspection measures only so much; exact equality is not the same thing as being indistinguishably close. In ordinary practical situations, knowing where something is and knowing that it is there often arrive together. In mathematics they need not.

The strange part of the story is that the mathematician whose name became attached to this existence theorem also spent much of his intellectual life challenging the unrestricted legitimacy of such existence arguments. But even that sentence can mislead if it suggests a clean conversion from classical mathematics to intuitionism. His foundational objections were already in place before his most celebrated topological work.

The question running through the episode is therefore not whether Brouwer once believed something and then changed his mind. It is what a mathematical assertion of existence must deliver. The previous essay ended with the pressure to prove that classical mathematics could not generate a contradiction. Brouwer's challenge went further back: before we secure that mathematics, should we accept all the reasoning we are trying to secure?

2. Mathematics as an Activity

Brouwer's 1907 dissertation, on the foundations of mathematics, already contained the outline of the philosophy later called intuitionism. Mathematics was not primarily a collection of marks on paper. Nor was it a language obtained by deductions from purely logical axioms. Nor, on his account, was it the inspection of a fully formed realm of objects existing independently of mathematical activity.

It began with something people do.

He traced this activity to the experience of time: one moment passes, yet remains available in memory while another arrives. The separation and retention of these moments yield an elementary two-ness. Mathematical constructions develop from this basic intuition. One need not accept the philosophical account to see why it changes the obligations of a proof.

On a realist picture, a mathematical object might already exist whether anyone has discovered it or not. A proof can establish that the object must be somewhere in the mathematical universe without identifying it. Brouwer rejected that starting point. To say that an object exists is to have constructed it, or to possess a construction that establishes the relevant object. Existence is tied to mathematical activity, not to an independently stocked warehouse.

This should not be reduced to a requirement that every number fit on a page or that every construction consist of a short computer program. Brouwer's mathematics would include a rich theory of the continuum and of sequences. His conception of construction was more distinctive than either present-day machine computation or the refusal to discuss infinity.

Language enters later. For Brouwer, mathematical language records, communicates, and helps recall constructions; it does not create their original warrant. Logic likewise describes regularities in legitimate mathematical activity. It cannot stand outside that activity and command it to accept an existence claim that has not been constructed.

The reversal becomes especially sharp beside Frege. Frege sought a logical foundation from which arithmetic could be derived. Brouwer treated logic as dependent on mathematics. What one thinker placed underneath arithmetic, the other placed downstream from it.

In 1908 Brouwer pressed this position into a direct criticism of familiar inference. His paper on the unreliability of logical principles questioned the unrestricted law of excluded middle. This was not the first doubt ever expressed about such reasoning; Jules Molk, among others, had raised related concerns. Its importance lies in the systematic mathematical philosophy to which Brouwer attached the objection.

The dissertation and the short paper should also not be mistaken for a complete intuitionistic reconstruction of analysis. A philosophical commitment can precede the technical mathematics needed to carry it out. Brouwer would work with extraordinary success in classical topology before returning to that reconstruction in sustained detail. The overlapping chronology is part of the story, not an embarrassment to be edited away.

3. What Is Being Excluded?

Excluded middle is usually written P or not-P. Either a proposition holds or its negation holds. Its everyday appearance is innocent: there is a book on the table or there is not. It sounds less like a rule of inference than a way of stating the obvious.

The common caricature is that Brouwer believed propositions could be neither true nor false, as though he wished to insert a third answer between yes and no. That misses the constructive issue. He asked what licenses a mathematical assertion, and in particular what licenses a disjunction.

To establish P constructively is to possess the appropriate proof or construction. To establish not-P is not merely to have failed to prove P. It is to show that a supposed proof or construction of P would lead to an impossibility. And to establish P-or-Q in the ordinary constructive interpretation is to establish one of its alternatives, with the information about which alternative has been established.

Classical logic does not impose that last requirement. It permits P-or-not-P independently of our ability to determine which alternative holds. From the two cases one may prove a common consequence, even while the truth of P remains undecided.

This distinction must not be turned into a false equivalence. Accepting classical excluded middle is not the assertion that there is a single terminating algorithm deciding every mathematical problem. Classical mathematicians can consistently accept excluded middle and prove that general decision procedures do not exist. Brouwer did connect unrestricted excluded middle with the conviction that mathematical problems are always solvable, but that historical argument and a modern theorem about algorithms are not interchangeable.

Finite searches help explain the attraction of constructive reasoning, provided each test in the search is decidable. If a list has finitely many entries and the required property can be checked for each one, we can inspect them all. Either we find a witness or we complete a proof that the list contains none. Finiteness alone is not enough if the property being tested already contains an undecided infinite question.

Now imagine looking through the decimal expansion of pi for a run of one hundred sevens. The example need not depend on a claim about the latest record of computed digits. Its point is the difference between an open-ended search and a proof of absence. Finding the block would settle the positive answer. Failing to find it in a trillion digits would not, by that fact alone, settle the negative answer.

Classical reasoning permits a division into the two cases anyway. Suppose that the block occurs; derive a conclusion. Suppose that it never occurs; derive the same conclusion. Then accept that conclusion. Brouwer's objection concerns the warrant for the division when neither alternative has been established constructively.

He did not forbid every use of a yes-or-no distinction. A proposition can be decidable; a particular disjunction can have a constructive proof. The dispute concerns a universal license, not a ban on the word “or.” It asks whether the form of a sentence alone entitles us to use a case distinction that our mathematical activity has not supplied.

4. Existence without a Selected Witness

A small textbook argument makes the issue visible. Are there irrational numbers a and b such that a raised to the power b is rational?

Recall that the square root of two is irrational. Put x = (sqrt(2))^(sqrt(2)). Either x is rational or it is irrational.

If x is rational, take a = sqrt(2) and b = sqrt(2). Both numbers are irrational and a^b is rational, exactly as required.

If x is irrational, take a = x and b = sqrt(2). Both are now irrational, and a^b = ((sqrt(2))^(sqrt(2)))^(sqrt(2)) = (sqrt(2))^2 = 2. The usual exponent law applies here because we are working with positive real bases and the standard real exponentiation. The result is rational.

Either way, the requested pair exists.

The proof has offered two candidate pairs and shown that one of them works. It has not established which pair works, because it has not determined whether x is rational. Its existential conclusion therefore contains less information than a construction selecting and verifying a particular pair.

That is not a flaw by classical standards. The argument is short, valid, and ingenious. Calling it nonconstructive describes the kind of conclusion it delivers, not an accidental gap that a careful classical referee should have rejected.

By the constructive standard, however, the missing selection matters. Showing that one cannot avoid the existence of a witness is not automatically the same achievement as presenting that witness with the evidence that it meets the specification. The proof does not earn the additional information simply because its alternatives are few or its displayed expressions are explicit.

This is a later teaching example, not a reconstruction of the examples in Brouwer's 1908 paper. It compresses a difficult philosophical disagreement into a piece of algebra that can be checked quickly. Its pedagogical usefulness is not evidence that Brouwer himself argued in exactly this way.

The candidates also need not remain undecided forever. Hilbert's seventh problem concerned the arithmetic character of numbers of this kind. In 1934 Aleksandr Gelfond and Theodor Schneider independently established results from which the transcendence, and therefore irrationality, of (sqrt(2))^(sqrt(2)) follows. With that additional theorem, the second pair is verified.

This does not mean that no explicit solution to the original elementary existence question could be given before 1934. Nor does it retroactively change what the two-case proof itself supplied. Add a new theorem and you have a stronger body of information. You have not altered the informational content of the original argument considered on its own.

That is why the disagreement cannot be settled merely by predicting that someone will eventually find the object. The question is about the present proof: what does it enable us to assert, and what does it enable us to do? A witness can later become available while the earlier reasoning remains nonconstructive.

5. Hilbert Moves the Requirement Upstairs

Hilbert had been concerned with mathematical foundations long before the dispute became a public contest between camps. His 1900 list included the consistency of arithmetic. In 1904–1905 he explored the joint foundations of arithmetic and logic; in 1917 he renewed the project. The program usually associated with his name took its mature shape around 1920, with a major lecture in 1921 and publication in 1922.

The plan had two connected tasks. A large part of classical mathematics would be expressed in formal systems. Then suitably restricted, finitary reasoning would establish that those systems could not derive a contradiction.

The ingenuity was not a refusal to feel the force of constructive criticism. Hilbert relocated it.

At one level were finite, surveyable objects and operations: numerical signs, finite strings of symbols, formulas, and finite proofs. At another were the ideal elements of classical analysis and set theory. The latter could range over infinite domains and employ methods that did not provide constructive witnesses in Brouwer's sense.

Brouwer wanted the warrant for mathematical assertions to arise throughout from acceptable construction. Hilbert wanted a secure, contentual mathematics of finite signs to justify the use of a much larger classical mathematics. Constructive security at the level of the investigation of proofs would protect nonconstructive reasoning inside the formalized theories under investigation.

This was not simply a claim that everything is a meaningless game with symbols. The finitist standpoint was meant to have directly intelligible content. Without some trusted ability to recognize signs, inspect finite configurations, and carry out elementary operations, the proposed consistency proof would have no authority.

Nor should the project be reduced to a slogan that bare consistency magically makes every sentence true. Hilbert's program developed along with questions about the relation between ideal methods and meaningful finite conclusions. The protective role of consistency belonged to that larger strategy of justification.

The clash intensified in 1921 when Hermann Weyl publicly aligned himself with Brouwer. Weyl was not a marginal opponent of modern mathematics. He was one of Hilbert's most distinguished former students and a major creative mathematician. His essay on the new foundational crisis portrayed Brouwer's challenge as a revolution.

For Hilbert, that endorsement brought the attack close to home. His Hamburg lecture, published as a new grounding of mathematics, answered in combative terms. He compared the proposed restrictions to earlier attempts associated with Kronecker, argued that sacrificing troublesome parts of mathematics would mutilate the subject, and treated the alleged revolution as an attempted seizure by familiar methods.

The political imagery belongs to the participants, but it should not dictate the historian's scale. The dispute was powerful without every working mathematician having joined an opposing army. Weyl's intervention helped turn a specialized foundational question into a highly visible dispute about the future of the discipline.

The two programs also retained an important point of contact. Each sought a form of mathematical activity that could bear ultimate trust. They disagreed both about what that activity permitted and about where its constraints had to operate. The convenient labels “formalism” and “intuitionism” capture the division only if we do not let them erase its common ground.

6. The Crisis of 1928

The conflict over the editorial board of Mathematische Annalen cannot be explained by starting and ending with excluded middle. Its immediate setting was the international organization of science after the First World War.

For years, German scientists and those from Germany's wartime allies had been excluded from important new international arrangements. The 1928 International Congress of Mathematicians in Bologna marked a substantial reopening. More than seventy German mathematicians attended, forming a delegation exceeded only by the Italian hosts. Hilbert was a leading advocate of participation.

Brouwer urged the opposite course. He regarded the proposed readmission as still inequitable and pressed German colleagues to boycott the congress. Although Dutch, he had deep ties to German mathematics through his publications, friendships, and editorial work. His intervention came from inside a connected scholarly network, not from an uninvolved spectator. Nevertheless, some German colleagues could regard his attempt to direct their response as an intrusion.

Hilbert favored renewed international exchange. An internationalist political address survives among his papers, three pages apparently copied by his wife, with a concluding vision of mathematics transcending national and racial divisions. The existence of that manuscript does not establish that he delivered it at Bologna. The documentary distinction matters: a surviving speech draft and a documented public speech are different historical objects.

By the autumn, the international dispute intersected with control of a major journal. Brouwer had served on the Annalen editorial board since 1914. On 27 October 1928 a telegram reached him in Laren, alerting him to the move against his editorial position.

Hilbert could not simply dismiss another editor as an employer dismisses an employee. Contracts, different editorial roles, the publisher's authority, and the consent of other editors all mattered. The dispute became a prolonged administrative and legal struggle. Its eventual solution was the dissolution of the existing arrangement and the constitution of a new board without Brouwer.

Carathéodory strongly opposed the manner of Brouwer's exclusion. Einstein also objected to the coercive approach, while refusing to become the champion of either faction. Brouwer protested rather than silently accepting his removal. His letters of 2 November to Blumenthal and Carathéodory belong to the early documentary record of his response.

The explanation of motives is less firm than this sequence. Hilbert's associates described a concern about his health and the possibility that Brouwer might gain excessive influence over the journal after his death. Letters by Blumenthal on 16 November and Born on 20 November bear on that interpretation. They report what people close to Hilbert understood or wished others to understand; they do not provide unrestricted access to his private mind.

Brouwer offered another account, relating some of the hostility to his refusal of a Göttingen appointment in 1919. Later correspondence also reveals disagreement within Hilbert's circle about how far personal resentment entered the affair. The evidence supports competing explanations, not a single transparent psychological verdict.

Dirk van Dalen's archival reconstruction makes the familiar straight line from philosophical disagreement to dismissal look too simple. Postwar politics, relations between mathematical centers, editorial authority, and worries about succession all belong in the account. The long-standing foundational opposition supplied an antagonistic background. The Bologna boycott dispute supplied an immediate confrontation. Institutional control helps explain why the confrontation took this administrative form. Their exact relative weights remain matters of interpretation.

Dates and contractual actions are often easier to establish than the proportions of anger, fear, principle, and ambition behind them. Keeping those evidential levels separate does not drain the incident of drama. It prevents the drama from doing the work of missing evidence.

7. Returning to the Fixed Point

The editorial affair damaged Brouwer's relations with Hilbert's circle and diminished his role on that part of the international stage. Words such as withdrawal and isolation recur in biographies, but they should not imply that his mathematics ended.

His student Arend Heyting gave intuitionistic logic a formal presentation around 1930. Brouwer continued developing his own mathematics, including choice sequences. He helped establish Compositio Mathematica in 1934 and entered local politics in Blaricum in 1935. Losing an influential editorial position was not the same as losing a mathematical tradition.

Now return to the fixed-point theorem.

Its prehistory is not a single moment of inspiration. Piers Bohl obtained a related three-dimensional result in 1904. Brouwer's work developed around 1909 and after; Hadamard supplied a general-dimensional argument in 1910; Brouwer's topological treatment became firmly associated with the general theorem in 1911. Different accounts attach different dates because they refer to different results and publications. The eponym should not erase this development.

The chronology of Brouwer's philosophy is equally important. His intuitionistic commitments date from 1907–1908, before these celebrated classical results. He did not first make his reputation in an innocent classical phase and only then discover his objections. For a period, he pursued classical topology while already holding a philosophy whose systematic mathematical reconstruction remained to be done.

A classical fixed-point proof can establish an exact point without supplying an effective general method for calculating it from the map. This is not merely a complaint about a badly written proof. Computable examples can show genuine limits on obtaining computable exact fixed points under broad hypotheses. The distinction between exact and approximate information has mathematical substance.

In 1952 Brouwer published a two-page paper in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, entitled “An Intuitionist Correction of the Fixed-Point Theorem on the Sphere.” The historical title should not be read as the false modern assertion that every self-map of a spherical surface has a fixed point; the relevant fixed-point setting is ball-like. His constructive reformulation concerned approximate fixed points rather than a blanket constructive production of an exact one.

The approximate demand is this: specify a positive tolerance, however small, and construct a point whose image is closer to it than that tolerance. Suitable constructive formulations make the continuity information and other assumptions part of the theorem. The claim is not that the word “continuous,” with no account of the supplied data, automatically yields an executable procedure in every framework.

Classically, increasingly accurate approximate fixed points can lead to an exact one by compactness. In a compact region, one extracts a convergent subsequence; continuity then identifies its limit as fixed. But the unrestricted sequential compactness used in this passage is not generally available in intuitionistic mathematics in the same form. Constructively, establishing arbitrarily good approximations and constructing an exact solution need not be equivalent.

It would therefore be misleading to say that Brouwer simply repaired the old proof while preserving an identical conclusion. He changed the acceptable formulation as well as the justificatory route. It would be equally misleading to announce that he proved the classical theorem false. The dispute concerned what its assertion could mean and warrant under his standards.

The exact point remains licensed in classical mathematics. The intuitionistic correction supplies a different, carefully limited conclusion. Set beside the dissertation, the 1952 paper shows a sustained effort to make technical mathematics answer to a philosophical demand Brouwer had articulated more than forty years earlier.

8. What Remained

Excluded middle was not expelled from mathematics. Classical analysis, algebra, geometry, and set theory continued to use nonconstructive arguments. Intuitionism became an important tradition; it did not replace the predominant practice.

The participants' language can make the period look like a war consuming the entire discipline. Weyl wrote of crisis and revolution; Hilbert answered with the imagery of a failed coup. Even the editorial dispute acquired the label of a battle between frogs and mice.

Unlike many circulating anecdotes, the last expression has a documented attribution. Van Dalen reproduces Einstein's letter to Born of 27 November 1928, in which Einstein uses it while declaring his neutrality and criticizing the disproportionate quarrel. The dated recipient and text are available through archival scholarship. The phrase is evidence of Einstein's reaction, not proof that the foundational issues themselves were trivial.

What changed most profoundly was the capacity to make proofs objects of mathematical investigation. One could ask which logical principles a theorem requires, whether an existence proof yields a witness, what can be extracted computationally, or how a formal theory relates to a weaker theory used to study it. Questions previously presented chiefly as philosophical demands acquired technical forms.

Brouwer's enduring contribution was to insist that existence and construction need not be the same achievement. Hilbert's was not erased by the later limitations on his original program. Proof theory, formalization, and the study of relative consistency developed from the questions his project made precise.

Weyl himself did not remain an unqualified adherent of Brouwer's position. By the middle of the 1920s, the mathematical needs of theoretical physics helped draw him away from it. Looking back in 1946, he described the foundational crisis as something that had affected the direction of his own work and consumed intellectual energy, even while ordinary mathematics continued. His testimony is powerful as a report of personal experience. It does not establish that every mathematician suffered the same paralysis.

Intuitionistic mathematics was also more than arithmetic with a few prohibitions. From 1918–1919 onward Brouwer reconstructed parts of set theory, the continuum, and analysis. Choice sequences and his special continuity principles gave the theory distinctive resources. Some classical statements split into nonequivalent constructive versions: a direct existence assertion, a double-negated existence assertion, and an approximation claim may no longer travel together.

Later constructive mathematics is not simply Brouwer's philosophy translated into computer language. Heyting formalized inference even though Brouwer regarded mathematics as prior to language. Other traditions pursued computational meaning without accepting his account of inner time. Some of Brouwer's own principles go beyond what approaches restricted to computable objects will accept. Intuitionism, finitism, and computability are not synonyms.

Nor is program extraction governed by a single yes-or-no test for excluded middle. Some constructive formal systems support direct extraction; some classical arguments yield computational information through translations and interpretations. Axioms, the shape of the theorem, and the target notion of computation all matter. Machine-checking a proof and extracting a runnable program from it are related but different achievements.

The lasting question is more exact than “Should we believe excluded middle?” When an argument proves that something exists, what information has it delivered? A witness? A method? An approximation? An impossibility of nonexistence? These distinctions are now part of the everyday work of logic and theoretical computer science.

One boundary remained to be confronted. Hilbert needed a sufficiently secure proof that his formalized mathematics could not derive a contradiction. In 1928 he still expressed confidence in the consistency project. Two years later, at Königsberg, a little-known twenty-four-year-old would announce a result that changed the problem.

The numbers could keep being calculated. What mathematics could establish about its own proofs was another question.
