Making Room for Someone Not Yet Here

Preparation can be wholehearted without writing the newcomer’s life in advance. The hope is to welcome a person, not to complete a product.

The evening Fang Ning says she wants a child, she does not produce a plan. She imagines getting to know someone they do not yet know, watching that person grow and sometimes surprise them. Cheng Li listens. He does not have the same longing, he says, but he recognizes how real hers is and wants to prepare with her.

Over two years, they reconsider work, savings and where to live. They read, ask friends and discuss who could do what. The spare room is partly cleared, still holding some of their things. Something is already happening. The person has not arrived.

Relatives speak of continuing the family line and having someone to rely on in old age. Those remarks have histories of their own. What the couple are doing, however, need not be recruiting a successor for an existing vacancy. They may be preparing for someone whose arrival changes the places themselves.

Preparing together need not mean wanting identically

Both wanting a child sounds straightforward. Cheng and Fang may want different things. She hopes to know a newcomer; he genuinely recognizes her hope and wishes to participate in that life. Different reasons do not automatically make one of them counterfeit.

His willingness cannot simply be presumed. It remains his when he affirms it and can participate, revise and withdraw. Fear of saying no, or agreement supplied by relatives, cannot be completed into his assent by an observer calling it support.

Their shared undertaking is preparation of conditions, not manufacture of a child as a joint product. Jobs, money and timing can be matters to arrange together. The reasons for undertaking them may remain different. Neither person need first pass an examination requiring the same wish.

One contributing more ideas is not necessarily taking over. Cheng may accept Fang’s arrangements because she has considered them well. What matters is not the number of suggestions but whether participation, adjustment and withdrawal remain genuinely available. Accepting a good proposal is different from losing a place in deciding.

Had he instead said he did not wish to do this, the shared preparation would not have begun. Her wish would still deserve attention. His married status would not supply a child owed to her. Love does not assent on either person’s behalf to this further undertaking.

Preparation does not vanish if arrival does not follow

Someone who agreed may later change. A genuine earlier commitment requires attention to what was arranged around it. Treating change as something that never needs explanation would leave the other person’s actual changes in life unacknowledged.

But facing effects does not surrender the possibility of changing. ‘How can you do this to me now?’ may express pain or be used to make reconsideration an impermissible debt. Its use matters: can an answer still enter? The presence of distress does not settle that question alone.

Bringing in enforceable consequences or family pressure to make refusal harder adds something beyond expression. Where basic rights are crossed or refusal becomes actually unavailable, mutual understanding is not a sufficient response. A tender telling must not soften that boundary away.

A child may ultimately not arrive. The preparation happened: work changed, a move occurred, some conditions remained while others found different uses. Non-arrival is another fact. It does not reach backwards and make the earlier years never have occurred.

Nor does it establish a deficiency in either person, or a missing piece the marriage ought to possess. They do not need a successful product to certify that the years were seriously lived. They need not immediately reinterpret a loss as good fortune in order to continue living.

Fang may grieve, and Cheng may too. Their grief need not match. One may want to talk while the other is not ready. Sharing an experience does not require sharing an identical feeling. Consolation is not a demand that somebody turn the page at my pace.

Welcoming a person, not extending ourselves

If a child arrives, that person will use conditions they prepared without being a meaning produced by those conditions. They can arrange a room and time. They cannot thereby acquire the decision about who the newcomer will become. Inability to choose the beginning does not transfer ownership of a life to its preparers.

This does not require a small child to decide like an adult, or pretend every arrangement can already be refused. Adults will have much to decide during dependent years. What must remain open is a life gradually developing beyond their expectations, rather than the child acquiring standing only after being able to articulate an objection.

Wanting to recognize oneself in a child is familiar. A remark about resembling a parent does not alone establish instrumental treatment. The question is whether arrangements eventually leave only a use: continuation, security in old age, repair of regrets, or a way to keep another adult in the household.

Adult hopes can have a place, and a grown child may freely care in return. But arrival is not a repayment contract signed in advance. Difficult preparation cannot claim the direction of the newcomer’s life. Gratitude and the belonging of that life remain different matters.

The couple’s hopes also do not fuse into a family meaning authorized to answer for the child. Each person’s reasons and understanding remain theirs. A shared room and a shared undertaking can be real without creating a voice above the people to announce what each must become.

Not yet here need not mean not yet existing. When Shao Hui and Song Lan prepare to adopt, the person may already have lived elsewhere for years. There are earlier days the couple did not write and may not know. Clearing a room is preparation to meet someone already begun.

Where there is already contact with a particular child, questions and responses are actual encounters. Not yet living together cannot erase them. Conversely, when the newcomer is not known, there is no need to invent future gratitude or understanding as approval of the preparation.

The paper uses preparation broadly: creating conditions for someone not yet in the couple’s life, including adoption. It does not construct a theory of the physical process of reproduction. Arrival introduces many further questions. The next essay follows only their bearing on the couple.

Marriages not undertaking this preparation are not waiting to be completed. Lives can turn outwards in many directions. Having a child is not a graduation certificate establishing that two people have learned to look beyond themselves.

One evening Fang opens the spare-room window while Cheng moves an unopened box against the wall. They have obtained no guarantee of the future. They have made a little more room today. If someone comes, that person will bring a life neither can yet imagine. The unexpected can itself belong within their hope.

Reader essays drawn from the eight SAE Marriage Theory papers, preserving their central distinctions and everyday examples rather than reproducing every technical proposition or philosophical comparison. English is independently written. The couples and added domestic details are fictional illustrations, not reported cases or advice about a particular marriage. The papers examine one kind of two-adult marriage; this does not deny other forms or rank people outside their scope. Examples often use a woman and a man, but gender combination is not an entrance condition. Formal recognition and dissolution depend on particular rules. These essays are not a current-law guide, a test of inward love, or a substitute for safety and protection.
