You Were Not Like This When We Were Young

An arrangement lasting decades meets an afternoon in a pottery studio. Can an old household make room for the people living in it now?

At fifty-two, Meng Qiuyun enrolls in a pottery course three days a week. When she tells He Shoucheng, he is waiting for dinner. He asks who will cook on those days, then says she was not like this when they were young. She puts the form down: after more than twenty years of her cooking, can he not manage three days?

They go no further that evening. He has not contributed nothing to the household. She has not suddenly acquired a mind of her own. An arrangement used so long it seemed as unremarkable as the furniture has made a sound because somebody wants to move it.

When they were young, he worked rotating railway shifts and she taught school. They agreed that she would handle meals and everyday accounts; he would repair things and do the heavy work. That arrangement had its circumstances. Decades later, their daughter has a home elsewhere and the shifts have changed. Can an old timetable decide tonight’s dinner on its own?

An earlier person cannot answer for today’s

‘You weren’t like this’ may express surprise or affection for a memory. Used to mean that her new wish cannot count because this is not who she used to be, it does more. The past becomes an authority appointed to decide who she is now.

Knowing a person for years brings closeness, not a qualification to prevent change. Qiuyun may genuinely have wanted to devote much time to the household. Wanting the course today need not require declaring the previous twenty years a mistake.

Their times have always intersected. Her earlier agreement to cook entered his evenings; her present wish immediately enters his life. Change is not merely an inward revision. It meets somebody who may still be waiting according to an older arrangement.

They need not first resolve every deep difference. Shoucheng may still want regular meals, while Qiuyun remains unwilling to surrender the course. They can arrange cooking ahead, his days and meals out. A new way of proceeding need not make them into the same person.

Later, he may reconsider the belief that cooking belongs to women, discovering how unexamined it has been. If he revises it and they confirm a new arrangement, that is another kind of change. An observer cannot determine which has occurred merely from seeing him at the stove.

Reconsidering alone is not the same as reaching agreement together. A private change of mind does not notify the partner. Stopping an old practice does not automatically create a new shared one. Choosing again has to happen between the people here today, not merely in somebody else’s sympathetic account of them.

An arrangement is neither a debt nor an identity

Who cooks begins as an arrangement. Becoming the person whose identity is to cook adds something else. When alteration then becomes practically unavailable, the arrangement is no longer only organizing time; it is narrowing a life.

Nobody need formally announce the change. Every request to return later may be met with displeasure, until she starts anticipating the face and stops asking. Absence of an argument does not establish absence of a problem. Equally, years of quiet do not alone establish control. We need the particular workings.

She might also have treated the arrangement as unchangeable before he has heard her concern. Her own relationship with habit and his actions obstructing her are different questions. Finding an easily understood culprit must not mean assigning every hesitation to the spouse.

Her reference to twenty years contains something worth hearing: the evenings hurried home, the fatigue routinely taken up without discussion. Responding immediately that love must not keep accounts may leave that work unheard again.

She can describe exhaustion and ask for recognition and change. The same sentence could also be used to make his future into repayment, with every answer still read as an unpaid debt. Its wording alone cannot settle which use occurred. Where the evening provides too little evidence, we need not invent certainty.

Division of work is not necessarily exchange. Repairs need not pay for dinners, or dinners prepay future repairs. An accepted arrangement can contain unequal quantities. Unequal quantities do not automatically establish injustice; neither does that observation excuse refusing to notice somebody’s labor.

Discussing contributions need not injure tenderness. Sometimes tenderness is injured by being used as the reason nobody may discuss them. A person need not accumulate enough misery for a major argument before being allowed to ask for a different day.

Making peace does not undo what preceded it

One year, Qiuyun finally says she wants to spend the holiday with her own relatives sometimes. She has rehearsed it inwardly. To Shoucheng it sounds sudden: have they not always done the same thing? What is old for one person may be reaching the other for the first time.

Speaking can have different grounds. She may require it of herself rather than continuing to let silence decide. Both may have agreed to discuss major arrangements beforehand. He may simply wish she would talk more. A personal requirement, an accepted arrangement and an expectation cannot all be compressed into what spouses obviously owe.

Her silence does not automatically establish a debt to him; his wish to know need not be intrusive. An expectation can enter the conversation without inventing a pre-existing duty in reverse. Separating what was undertaken from what needs discussing now gives them more to work with.

They consider alternating holiday years. On another evening they stop because it is late. A pause can allow breathing space, or recur until a question never receives its turn. ‘Later’ cannot tell us alone whether another occasion is being preserved or worn away.

Conflict can make a difficulty audible while causing real pain. Sleeplessness and a week of strained politeness need not be called worthwhile because an arrangement eventually emerged. Something was understood; a cost remained. Harm does not have to be romanticized for change to be acknowledged.

Conversely, years without conflict are not an automatic favorable report. Two people may genuinely fit, or one may no longer dare to raise a concern. Frequency does not answer for us. We ask whether a different voice can still arrive and find somewhere to remain.

The new arrangement concerns what happens next. It cannot retrospectively supply consent to earlier displays of displeasure. What happened deserves attention; returning to acknowledge and repair it matters too. An apology need not delete the past, and the past need not delete every subsequent sincere effort.

In the third week of the course, Shoucheng sends a photograph, asking whether the rice has too much water. Afterwards Qiuyun replies that it does; tonight it can be porridge. This evening does not certify a marriage’s final achievement. It contains a meal that no longer waits solely for her return.

After many years, making an arrangement movable again can be a substantial kindness. The people who began together need not become flawless. They may still have a chance to bring their present selves home.

Reader essays drawn from the eight SAE Marriage Theory papers, preserving their central distinctions and everyday examples rather than reproducing every technical proposition or philosophical comparison. English is independently written. The couples and added domestic details are fictional illustrations, not reported cases or advice about a particular marriage. The papers examine one kind of two-adult marriage; this does not deny other forms or rank people outside their scope. Examples often use a woman and a man, but gender combination is not an entrance condition. Formal recognition and dissolution depend on particular rules. These essays are not a current-law guide, a test of inward love, or a substitute for safety and protection.
