Who Is Speaking When We Say For the Child?

A third person brings more shared work. The arrival need not erase either adult, or become a lock keeping someone in the marriage.

As her leave approaches its end, Luo Wei finds her old work pass in a drawer. Tang Pu sees it and suggests that, for the child, she should stay home another two years. She runs a finger along the worn edge and does not agree.

Both are caring for the child; both are tired. Nights, drop-offs and collections must be rearranged around work and poor sleep. A new person does more than add a place at the table. The familiar partner suddenly stands in unfamiliar days.

‘For the child’ comes easily at such a time. It may convey real concern or a request. It can also seem to introduce an unquestionable voice, allowing the actual speaker to withdraw behind it.

A third person, not a higher voice

The child is another person, not a product of two adults or a third will appointed to decide for everyone. The arrival genuinely alters their arrangements. It does not absorb either adult into the other’s life.

Marriage Theory follows the relation between the spouses here: shared care, deliberation, undertakings and the presentation of a child’s needs to one another. Parent–child relations require further work. Taking this part seriously does not mean pretending to have completed all the others.

Luo can want to return to the design office without caring less for the child. Tang can want more time at home without having only one possible reason. Hours of care and labor deserve attention, but they cannot serve as a clock measuring the whole of somebody’s love.

Each may hope the child develops independently. Each must also meet the question of allowing a life not organized around themselves or the other parent. One adult’s willingness does not complete the other’s. A joint arrangement cannot disappear into how our family does things, with nobody left to answer for it.

This is not a requirement that a child physically leave or become practically self-sufficient. Some people need support over a lifetime. Dependence does not diminish their standing or transfer their life to a caregiver. The concern is that their developing judgment not be replaced, not that everyone manage alone.

Making conditions available and allowing a child to use them in unforeseen directions are connected but distinct. The newcomer need not become a person the parents fully understand before having a life that belongs to them.

A need can be presented without being impersonated

The child did not tell Luo to stop working. Tang did. He may be worried about care, or simply find her remaining home convenient. Either way, it begins as his judgment. The child’s name cannot convert it into an instruction that no longer needs her answer.

He can put a specific worry before her: how will collection work? She can acknowledge the difficulty without accepting the proposed solution. Caring for the same person does not require identical answers. Rejecting a plan is not necessarily rejecting the child.

A reminder of a genuinely accepted care arrangement is different from inventing one. Undertakings matter, and changing them requires facing the effects already produced. They still do not become identities that one person may never reconsider.

‘For the child’ therefore need not be prohibited language. It can disclose a shared difficulty. Used to terminate the partner’s answer, it performs different work. A concern being important cannot automatically give its speaker the final decision.

Relatives bring concern too. Luo’s mother urges them to stay together for the child. Her worry may be sincere. It cannot supply their assent to a life. Pressure arriving through another person still contains actions attributable to those who originate and relay it.

During an argument, Luo says Tang will never see the child if he leaves. That is more than an expression of fear: it announces a consequence capable of raising the cost of departure. Its enforceability and actual obstruction require examination. Anger cannot make the utterance never have occurred.

Neither can one sentence settle her whole life or all her feeling for the child. Whether the child is left only as a means of retaining the spouse requires attention to the arrangements. Identifying a particular operation differs from issuing a permanent verdict on a person. The distinction does not lessen what the operation requires them to face.

Whose forgotten collection?

On another afternoon, Luo works late and asks Tang to collect the child. He agrees, then forgets. After the nursery calls, he hurries over and brings the child home. He tells Luo she did not remind him.

A reminder is a separate matter they can discuss. The undertaking and the forgetting were his. Shared life must not dilute actions into we both have problems until nobody needs to describe their own part.

If an unexpected work problem, an undelivered message or an agreed change intervened, those facts matter separately. Seeing nonperformance does not authorize an immediate verdict of deception, intention or absence of love. We can take facts seriously without filling in another person’s mind.

Contributions need the same care. Nights awake and shifts altered should not vanish into being a family. Acknowledging them is not a competition to establish which parent cares more. It can make rearrangement possible before one person is too exhausted to speak gently. A new timetable can be one way of taking that work seriously, not a denial that it happened.

But contribution does not buy command. Doing more cannot alone settle whether a partner may work or leave. That would convert genuine labor into possession of another life. The work deserves recognition without needing such a conversion to make it valuable.

The couple may eventually separate. Ending marriage does not automatically end shared parenting or clear what has already been undertaken and done. Neither does this continuing account become an order to restore the marriage. Further care need not have resuming cohabitation as its only possible form.

Adoption raises these questions too. ‘It was you who insisted’ cannot later transfer a genuinely shared undertaking into one person’s name. If the original assent was not shared, that difference needs truthful attention; it is still not a way of exchanging away actions one has actually taken.

At the weekend, Luo returns the pass to her bag. Tang writes down the evenings when work will genuinely run late. They have not solved every future difficulty or accepted every reason. This time they can present what they actually fear instead of issuing a final instruction in the child’s voice.

Care consists of innumerable small matters. Not losing anyone inside them may be less a beautiful family slogan than someone being willing to hear who is late today, who is exhausted, and who agreed to something that did not happen.

Reader essays drawn from the eight SAE Marriage Theory papers, preserving their central distinctions and everyday examples rather than reproducing every technical proposition or philosophical comparison. English is independently written. The couples and added domestic details are fictional illustrations, not reported cases or advice about a particular marriage. The papers examine one kind of two-adult marriage; this does not deny other forms or rank people outside their scope. Examples often use a woman and a man, but gender combination is not an entrance condition. Formal recognition and dissolution depend on particular rules. These essays are not a current-law guide, a test of inward love, or a substitute for safety and protection.
