Nahoko Uehashi uses an invented grain to tell a story about systems that control by giving, offices that consume the people who occupy them, and a girl whose solitude becomes a new way of listening.

Kōkun (2022) turns the miraculous Ohalre rice into an imperial infrastructure. The three essays ask what happens when prosperity removes the right to exit, when a living deity is reduced to a replaceable role, and when fifteen-year-old Aisha hears signals the empire has no language to receive.

The complete series is available in English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Spanish, and Korean. Each added language is independently rewritten for its readers.
