In 1938 Lieutenant Mamiya escorts a secret agent near the Manchurian-Mongolian border under orders whose purpose he is not told. The party is captured. A Russian officer has the agent Yamamoto skinned alive while Mamiya watches. The killing is not merely efficient; the body is dismantled as a message for the surviving witness.
Mamiya is thrown into a dry well. Each day a brief shaft of sunlight reaches the bottom. In it he touches something he cannot describe; afterward, he says, the light took away his capacity to love and hate. Honda rescues him, and he returns to Japan, teaches for decades, and lives as an inhabited shell.
He later visits Toru to deliver Honda’s bequest. The box is empty. A man who returned empty from war carries an empty inheritance.
The violence of Manchuria and Noboru Wataya’s clean public power are never joined by an explicit thesis. The novel places them on the same historical line. One world sends bodies into unexplained orders; another issues credentials and airtime. Both can take something from a person while presenting action as the execution of a role.
After Kumiko disappears, Toru begins descending into the dry well beside an abandoned house. It cannot locate her in any ordinary sense. He sits anyway.
Mamiya was thrown into darkness and lost the desire to live. Toru enters by choice. After prolonged darkness, he passes through the wall into Room 208 of a strange hotel. A woman waits there without a visible face; someone knocks in the corridor. When Toru returns, a blue-black mark has appeared on his cheek.
The moral difference between the wells is not darkness but agency: one man is deposited there as waste; the other makes descent an act no recognized power assigned.
The mark has no accepted explanation and cannot support a legal claim. It is nevertheless something carried back from a place Noboru’s public world does not govern.
Toru’s voluntary descent is not safe. May Kasahara once removes the rope ladder, leaving him trapped while she talks from above. He nearly dies. She eventually returns it. Their conversations at the well remain among the novel’s clearest because neither possesses the standing to lecture the other: a girl absent from school and a man absent from work meet beside a hole with no public function.
Noboru’s strength exists above ground—in recognizable platforms granted by others. Toru’s develops underground, in isolation, beyond verification. Murakami does not romanticize the imbalance. A society that recognizes only official power can force resistance into forms that cannot explain themselves without sounding mad.
The two wells contain the novel’s historical question. Does entering by choice transform a place where another man was emptied? It cannot undo Mamiya’s experience. It can make the same shape serve a different direction: not abandonment, but the patient creation of a route through a wall.
