Reading The Outsider

Three essays on a man who does not cry, a trial that confiscates his first person, and an outsider whose location depends on who draws the boundary.

Meursault kills a man and is tried through the story of his mother’s funeral. Camus constructs that displacement carefully. The court needs a character it can condemn, while Meursault refuses the ordinary language by which a character is made socially legible.

The essays do not turn him into a secret saint. They ask what can be inferred from absent performance, who owns a first-person life in court, and whether the final encounter with an indifferent world is liberation, exclusion, or both.

Albert Camus's The Outsider. Full-book spoilers throughout.
