Reading The Metamorphosis

Three essays on labor before the insect, the grammar that turns a son into a thing, and the family’s less visible transformation.

Gregor Samsa’s changed body is the novel’s impossible fact. Everything around it is painfully ordinary: debt, timetables, rent, family duty, workplace suspicion. Kafka joins the two so that the fantastic transformation reveals a social one already underway.

These essays ask what Gregor had become before the morning in bed, how care changes with classification, and why the family’s return to ordinary life is not a simple recovery.

Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis. Full-book spoilers throughout.
