He Spent Years Making Sure There Was No Alternative

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, edited for factual precision.

The Walls fall and the Titans begin to walk. Any serious judgment of the Rumbling must start by refusing a comforting simplification: Paradis is not imagining the threat. Willy Tybur declares war before representatives of other nations; a Global Alliance forms; Marley attacks the island. Doing nothing is not a harmless option.

Eren also possesses future-memory fragments no strategist in ordinary history could possess. The case for him should be stated at full strength before it is rejected.

I. Defense and permanent incapacity are different aims

The Rumbling quickly destroys the assembled Global Allied Fleet and removes the immediate capacity for invasion. Eren does not stop there. He sends the Wall Titans across inhabited continents until eighty percent of humanity outside the island is dead.

Those are not merely different quantities of the same defensive act. Stopping an attack answers a present use of force. Making every external society incapable of threatening Paradis for generations answers a claim about the future.

Eren believes hostility will return if external populations retain power. The story gives him powerful reasons for that belief, but not an exhaustive vision of every possible future. He has seen decisive memory fragments, and later experiences time through the Founder in a profoundly disordered way. Neither fact turns all unrealized human choices into completed acts.

II. The remaining possibility not to become an enemy

The usual objection to preventive violence is uncertainty: prediction may be wrong. Eren's case forces a deeper objection because his evidence is more than prediction. Even if a future attack is remembered accurately, the people who have not yet committed it still occupy the present as persons, not as finished versions of their possible future conduct.

To kill them now is not only to remove a threat. It removes their remaining capacity to refuse the role assigned to them. That capacity may be narrow, socially obstructed, or unlikely. It is nevertheless part of what distinguishes a person from a forecast.

Gabi supplies the story's internal example. She arrives on Paradis committed to killing “island devils.” Shared meals, labor, grief, and the Braus family's mercy destroy the world in which that phrase made sense. By the time the Rumbling begins, she works to stop it.

Eren did not necessarily possess advance knowledge of every step in Gabi's change. He did possess its fact before completing the Rumbling: a committed enemy had changed. The evidence that people can become otherwise stood in front of him.

III. Secrecy removes the people who could stop him

Wartime plans cannot be fully public. That banal truth does not justify Eren's form of concealment. He withholds the core end of the plan from Armin, Mikasa, Hange, and the comrades who share its moral and political consequences. He injures relationships deliberately and uses the Yeagerists without giving them the outcome they are helping produce.

The primary target of this secrecy is not Marley. It is the internal line through which Eren might be contradicted. Those closest to him are not merely operational liabilities; they are the last people with enough standing, knowledge, and attachment to make him pause.

A decision imposed on an entire population becomes less defensible when the decision-maker first disables the relationships through which correction could arrive.

IV. Even the opposition is inside the plan

Eren expects his friends to stop and kill him, then to appear before the surviving world as the heroes who defeated its enemy. He leaves them the freedom and power to resist. That restraint matters—but it also means their resistance has been assigned a function inside his design.

A system that can absorb opposition as one of its planned stages has no genuine outside. If dissent arrives, it confirms the design. If dissent fails, the Rumbling continues. In neither case does an independent judgment revise the goal.

The danger of certainty lies here. A correct plan and an uncorrectable plan can look identical while events go well. The difference appears only when someone needs to say, “This premise is wrong,” and still possesses authority to stop the machinery.

V. There was no clean option

The alternatives are morally compromised. The royal-blood succession plan turns Historia and her descendants into reproductive infrastructure. Zeke's euthanasia plan is genocide administered through infertility. Diplomacy proceeds under extreme asymmetry after generations of propaganda and war.

Recognizing this prevents easy moralism. The island cannot escape tragedy by selecting a hidden perfect answer. But “there is no clean option” does not imply that every dirty option is equivalent, or that the person with the most power may close deliberation.

Eren says there is no alternative after spending years withholding information, breaking alliances, manipulating followers, and preventing the people who might formulate alternatives from participating in his decision. The resulting scarcity of options is real. It is also partly manufactured.

VI. Four safeguards against irreversible certainty

The argument can be restated as four design constraints. First, a future act cannot by itself make every person who has not committed it punishable in the present. Second, force should remain tied to ending an immediate threat rather than guaranteeing permanent helplessness. Third, an irreversible decision borne by everyone cannot exclude all companions capable of informed dissent. Fourth, the system needs an independent stop—one not scripted by the author of the plan.

These are not tests of purity. They do not require a leader to be kind, omniscient, or free of tragic tradeoffs. They require a place for the sentence “I was wrong” to have practical consequences.

The Rumbling leaves no such place. It succeeds militarily on a scale no strategy has ever succeeded, preserves Paradis for an unmeasured period, and makes Eren's friends heroes. The final essay asks what that success means after the marching stops.
