A Life He Never Lived

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument for English-language readers. Plot claims have been checked and interpretive claims are marked as such.

Sigmund Corp sells a strange kind of mercy. Its employees do not change the world, resurrect the dead, or send clients back in time. They enter the memories of people who are about to die and rearrange those memories until an unfulfilled wish appears to have come true.

The restriction to dying clients is not incidental. A person who received the treatment and then returned to ordinary life would possess a past that the world did not share. The old life would still have happened, but it would no longer be the life available from inside the client’s own mind. In To the Moon, the ethical difficulty begins there: the service offers comfort by separating personal history from remembered history.

A miracle presented as a job

The two technicians who arrive at Johnny Wyles’s cliffside home are not prophets. Eva Rosalene is methodical; Neil Watts jokes, improvises, and touches things he should leave alone. They complain about equipment and deadlines. They have performed this service before.

That ordinariness matters. The game does not protect us by making memory alteration the obsession of a villain. It places the power in an office, gives it forms and procedures, and employs decent people to carry it out. The operation is legal, contractual, and compassionate. It is also an intervention into the only past the client will be able to inhabit.

Johnny’s request appears simple: he wants to go to the moon.

When Eva and Neil ask why, he cannot tell them.

A desire without an explanation

Johnny is not concealing a dramatic reason. He genuinely does not know. The wish has followed him for years, but when he turns toward its origin he finds nothing he can name.

For the technicians, this is not merely a psychological curiosity. Their procedure requires continuity. A new ambition has to be planted far enough back in memory, and it has to connect with enough of the person’s existing life, to grow into a plausible future. The mind resists a wish that arrives as a foreign object.

So Eva and Neil move backward through Johnny’s memories. The game gives this movement a material form: a paper rabbit, a book, a platypus toy, or some other object carries enough emotional weight to open the next scene. A life is not indexed principally by dates. It is held together by things that mattered, often after the owner has forgotten why.

Consent reaches a limit

Johnny has signed the contract. He knows the advertised nature of the procedure. No one is exploiting a refusal he is unable to express.

That settles one important question, but not every question.

Consent can establish that a person accepted a treatment. It cannot by itself establish that the desire guiding the treatment is transparent to him. Johnny has authorized strangers to reorganize his life around a wish whose source he cannot examine. He knows what sentence he has spoken—“I want to go to the moon”—but not what the sentence is carrying.

This is not an argument that his wish is false. Unexplained desires can be among our deepest. It is an argument that agreement and self-knowledge are different achievements. A signature can be sincere even when the person signing does not possess all the history that would let him understand what is being entrusted.

The invisible missing piece

If Johnny knew that part of his childhood was inaccessible, he could at least make the absence part of his decision. He could say: something is missing; proceed carefully. Instead, his life feels continuous from within. The absent memory appears only indirectly, as a wish that seems arbitrary.

This is why the company’s assignment changes shape. Eva and Neil do not first need to manufacture a trip to the moon. They need to discover what “the moon” means in the life of the person before them.

The answer is not hidden because Johnny refuses to speak. It is hidden because, many years earlier, someone tried to save him from a memory he could not bear.

Based on Freebird Games’ 2011 To the Moon, written, designed, and scored by Kan Gao. This series does not cover Finding Paradise or Impostor Factory. Full spoilers throughout.
