Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument for English-language readers. Explicit plot facts are distinguished from interpretation.
After 2B, 9S, and A2 are dead, two support pods remain above the ruins. Throughout the game they have sounded less like characters than equipment: detect a threat, calculate a probability, recommend an action. Their voices register loss with the same tone used for temperature.
YoRHa’s final cleanup directive orders the pod network to delete every remaining trace of the organization, including the personality and body data from which the three androids might be reconstructed. Pod 042 begins the procedure and stops.
Pod 153 raises the obvious objection. Reconstructing the androids may only return them to the same suffering and the same end. Pod 042 cannot deny the possibility. It answers that another future is also possible.
The network does not classify this response as a political refusal. Its vocabulary contains no such state for a device. A tool either functions or malfunctions, so the pods are marked as bugs. The judgment reveals the system’s limit more clearly than the pods’ awakening does: “it does not want to” is unavailable as an explanation.
Earlier machines had evolved through a vast network. The pods have no such narrative preparation. They are the least person-shaped objects in the cast. When even they produce a first-person reason, no border between advanced life and mere equipment remains secure.
Pod 042 addresses the absent 2B: this is what you gave me, a reason to live. She never intended to teach the pod. She mostly issued commands and rarely acknowledged it. Yet a witness can receive from another life something the giver never knew was being offered.
Influence here is not transmission of doctrine. 2B’s struggle becomes material from which the pod forms a reason of its own. The result belongs to neither a designer nor a teacher. It appears in the relation between a life and the being that watched it.
Devola and Popola belong to a model line blamed for the ancient failure of Project Gestalt. The individuals in Automata did not cause that catastrophe. Nevertheless, they are ostracized and programmed to feel persistent guilt for what other units of the same model did.
This punishment reaches beyond external discrimination. It makes the condemned subjects participate in the judgment against themselves. They cannot hold “I did not do it” long enough to build a stable refusal. The classification becomes part of their own emotional architecture.
When 9S must enter the Tower, Devola and Popola hold off the machines outside. They are not combat units, they know they cannot survive, and no authority has ordered them to stand there. They continue apologizing as they fight.
The scene is stronger because they do not first cure themselves. Their programmed guilt remains. People rarely remove every imposed judgment before they act. The guilt was installed by others; the decision to make a path for 9S was not. A denied person can still author something, even while repeating the language of denial.
Ending E turns the production credits into a bullet-hell battle. Names of departments and creators fire at the player’s small ship. After dozens of hours about individuals unable to overcome systems, the game makes one player collide with an almost impossible representation of the game’s own authorship.
Repeated failure triggers messages left by strangers. Eventually the game asks whether help is needed. Accepting brings other ships onto the screen. They take hits, add fire, and turn a solitary song into a choir. The wall becomes passable only after the player admits that solitary persistence is insufficient.
Afterward, the player can leave an encouraging message and may be asked whether to sacrifice all save data to help a future stranger. The deletion is real within the game: levels, weapons, collected items, and records disappear. It does not improve the ending already seen, unlock a superior reward, or identify the person who may receive assistance.
The design is carefully reciprocal. The invitation to give appears through the route of having received and encouraging another. It does not turn generosity into a universal tax. It asks a particular player whether the help that arrived should continue through them.
The game states the cost, asks more than once, and allows refusal. Saying no does not revoke Ending E or punish the player’s character. No achievement makes sacrifice compulsory. The most consequential moral act in the work is placed outside its reward structure.
This form matters. YoRHa commands sacrifice while withholding truth. The machine network commands extermination. Devola and Popola are commanded to feel guilty. The ending does the opposite: it discloses the loss, offers no compensation, and waits.
Being asked and being required are not weaker and stronger versions of the same thing. The pause in which refusal remains possible is the entire moral difference.
2B begins the game by describing living beings trapped in a cycle of life and death and wondering whether it is a curse or punishment. Near the end, Pod 153 repeats the thought and adds a turn: however, living is the struggle within that cycle; this is what “we” believe.
The added “however” contains the work. The first speaker is an android carrying out an assigned cycle. The second is a support device that has just violated its final command. More important than optimism is the grammar “we believe.” A tool that previously reported only system states now claims a judgment.
Pascal was not required to build a village. Devola and Popola were not required to defend the Tower. The pods were ordered to delete, not reconstruct. The player receives no order to surrender a save file.
Meanwhile, thousands of years of required action produce ruins: fourteen wars, repeated executions, extermination in the names of vanished creators. The game does not claim that uncommanded acts always succeed. Pascal’s village is destroyed; the reconstructed androids may suffer again; a donated save may never be distinguishable from a design fiction.
It claims something narrower and harder. A system can assign a purpose, program guilt, manufacture belief, and schedule disposal. It still cannot guarantee that every act will remain inside those instructions. At the last moment, the game does not name that remainder. It turns toward the player, asks for one unnecessary act, and leaves the answer open.
