After Radagon and the Elden Beast fall, the Tarnished stands before Marika’s broken body.
Elden Ring is commonly described as having six narrative endings. They do not appear as six neutral buttons produced at the last second. The player must establish each possibility in advance—completing a quest for a Mending Rune, placing Ranni’s summon sign, or inheriting the Frenzied Flame.
The final input belongs to the player. Its consequences belong to everyone.
The Age of Fracture repairs the Elden Ring without an additional Mending Rune and enthrones the Tarnished as Elden Lord. It demands the least extra commitment and therefore resembles default continuation.
The Age of Order uses Goldmask’s Mending Rune of Perfect Order. Its description identifies the Golden Order’s instability with the fickleness of gods who are “no better than men.” The reform aims to prevent divine whim from repeatedly rewriting Order.
The game does not say that the Tarnished becomes an emotionless enforcement machine. A more grounded concern remains: can a law insulated from arbitrary gods still answer forms of life its perfection did not anticipate? Preventing personal caprice and preserving the capacity for revision are not identical achievements.
The Age of the Duskborn uses Fia’s Mending Rune. It does not simply restore Destined Death in the ordinary sense. It embeds “life within Death” in Order, granting Those Who Live in Death a condition other than illegitimate error.
The Blessing of Despair comes from the Dung Eater. He is neither a voiceless victim nor a fallen sun knight established by the text. He is a serial murderer and defiler who proudly describes his acts. His rune makes the Seedbed Curse hereditary and prevents souls from returning to the Erdtree. If everyone is cursed, it claims, defilement will no longer mark a difference and every curse will become a cursed blessing.
The logic is worth recognizing without sanitizing its author. Exclusion can be answered by granting standing to the excluded, or by inflicting exclusion on everyone. Both erase the distinction. They move in opposite moral directions.
The Three Fingers and Hyetta present separation itself as the primal mistake. Once there is a you and an I, there can be grief, injury, and despair. Frenzied Flame promises to burn away every distinction and return all things to the One Great.
This is more radical than killing everyone. It abolishes the category of everyone—and with it anyone who could experience relief.
The path is also not treated as an unopposed private preference. Melina repeatedly warns that it would erase the chance for births, lives, and meanings yet to come. Inheriting the Flame locks the player onto its ending unless a demanding hidden process culminates in the use of Miquella’s Needle.
Its most dangerous assumption is not that suffering is unreal. It is that every uncertain future can already be counted as suffering and every unborn stranger can be counted as consenting to release.
The Age of Stars does not mend Marika. Ranni becomes the god of a new age and the Tarnished her consort. She removes her Order from immediate sensation, faith, and touch, departing with it on a thousand-year voyage.
This is not a world without order, nor does Ranni surrender all authority. She still inaugurates an age for people who did not collectively choose it.
What changes is the distance between law and life. The Golden Order points with visible light, manifests in an embodied god, and directs the dead toward tangible roots. Ranni imagines Order no longer pressing against every person in the same perceptible form.
She does not promise comfort. Her language includes chill, darkness, fear, doubt, and loneliness. Without gold on the ground, people will become lost more often. They may also find it harder to disguise their own preferred direction as heaven’s command.
The appeal of this ending is not the disappearance of rule. It is the suspicion that the best order may not be the one nearest to everyone, answering the most questions on their behalf.
These endings differ enormously, yet they share an unsettling act: the person who defeated every guardian decides the next age for the Lands Between.
No population authorizes the Tarnished. There is no assembly and no public argument. The claim rests on force, acquired runes, and the alliances made along the road. The player completes quests filled with particular lives, and the concluding political action remains radically concentrated.
Choosing the ending that sounds freest does not dissolve the contradiction. Even taking Order far away is a decision Ranni and the Tarnished make for everybody else.
An action RPG may have difficulty representing collective self-rule because it focuses action through one player. Elden Ring nevertheless exposes the concentration: after a journey through lives arranged by gods, lords, and laws, the system places the power to arrange everyone in your hands.
It is also inaccurate to say that the game gives all six conclusions equal achievements, length, and emphasis. There are three ending achievements: Elden Lord, Age of the Stars, and Lord of Frenzied Flame. The four mending variants share the Elden Lord achievement. Ranni receives an extensive quest and a distinct summon sign; Frenzied Flame receives dedicated staging; the Mending Runes mostly alter narration and visual tone.
The game weighs paths differently without officially labeling one the “true ending.” More importantly, each leaves a live question. Is restoration only delay? Does perfection become closure? What form will life within Death take? Can universal curse call itself equality? Does ending pain also end the person? Who restrains a distant Order?
Selection does not settle those questions. Before the screen goes dark, the player receives responsibility rather than a moral score.
On the surface, Elden Ring asks which law should govern. Beneath that question lies another: what relation should law have to people?
Can it recognize lives for which it initially had no category? Can it constrain divine whim while remaining corrigible? Does it allow refusal and exit? Does it universalize one person’s wound? Must it guide every step, or can it leave space in which no ray of Grace points the way?
No ending answers all of these.
The Ring waits. The Tarnished finally possesses the highest eligibility in the world. He has watched person after person become material for somebody else’s purpose. The final question is not which age has the most attractive color.
It is whether, once power is his, everyone else will again become material to be placed inside a law.
Based on FromSoftware's 2022 Elden Ring, directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki. It does not cover Shadow of the Erdtree. The game has six commonly distinguished narrative endings but only three ending achievements; the distinction is preserved here. Full spoilers.
