The Night of Black Knives

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument for English-language readers. Plot claims have been checked and interpretive claims are marked as such.

On the Night of Black Knives, two demigods die in different halves.

Godwyn the Golden dies in soul while his body remains alive beneath the Erdtree. Ranni kills her Empyrean flesh while her soul survives inside a doll.

The Cursemark of Death, which should have formed a circle, splits between them. One person’s escape and another person’s unfinished death are inscribed on the same ring.

A life selected in advance

Ranni is an Empyrean chosen by the Two Fingers as a possible successor to Marika and god of a new age. She is also given Blaidd: shadowbound vassal, childhood stepbrother, loyal friend, and hidden failsafe.

The selection grants the world’s highest eligibility while assigning her use. Her body is expected to become the vessel through which a cosmic order will govern.

Ranni refuses that destination. She steals a fragment of the Rune of Death and performs the rite that imbues the Black Knives. At the same instant that the assassins kill Godwyn, she kills her own body. Her flesh dies and her soul remains, placing the Empyrean body intended by the Fingers beyond their use.

She does not resign from the office. There is no office to receive the resignation. She destroys what the office means to occupy.

Her freedom uses somebody else’s death

Ranni openly admits stealing Death and making the knives. Her plan requires another demigod to die simultaneously so that the Cursemark will split and she can lose only flesh. The assassins target Godwyn. The game never states clearly whether Ranni personally chose him or why he became the victim.

That uncertainty does not remove the structure: her exit depends on the death of another person’s soul.

Godwyn is not an abstract cost. He defeated the ancient dragon Fortissax and then befriended his former enemy, making room for the Ancient Dragon Cult within the capital. Whatever idealization later attaches to him, he never consents to become the other half of Ranni’s release.

His soulless body is buried in the roots, becomes the Prince of Death, and spreads Deathroot across the Lands Between. Ranni exits a body assigned a purpose. The world acquires countless lives for which the Golden Order has no place.

Blaidd does not simply betray her

Blaidd’s fate also deserves precision.

The Two Fingers make him constitutionally loyal to Ranni while also building in a curse: if she rejects their design, her shadow will eventually become a danger to her. Iji imprisons Blaidd in the Forlorn Hound Evergaol because he fears that transformation; Ranni does not personally throw him into the pit.

Blaidd escapes and insists that he could never betray her. At the end of Ranni’s quest, he appears outside her tower, surrounded by dead Black Knife assassins and fighting the pressure that has made him hostile. The player may kill him or leave. His death is not required to obtain Ranni’s ending.

The tragedy is not that loyalty proves false. Blaidd is torn between imposed design and chosen fidelity until they cannot coexist.

Ranni’s rebellion exposes a mechanism that has been hidden in his body since birth. The responsibility cannot be reduced to her “changing her mind.” Her freedom, however, does not automatically provide his exit.

Orders without exits produce destructive departures

Ranni is not innocent because no polite option existed. The Night of Black Knives is planned. Godwyn and Those Who Live in Death bear costs she had no right to accept for them.

But when an order provides an Empyrean no means to appeal, refuse, or withdraw, departure cannot remain clean. Block every lawful exit and leaving will acquire the form of destruction. Destruction then reaches bystanders.

This does not excuse the harm. It separates responsibilities. The agent remains responsible for using another person; the order remains responsible for making every exit explosive and then citing the explosion as proof that exit was impossible.

Fia’s quest inherits the second debt. She cannot return Godwyn to his former life. She can create a principle under which Those Who Live in Death cease to be errors that the law permits others to hunt.

One person’s liberation leaves a remainder for later people to receive.

Melina chooses what was given

Melina offers another relation to assigned purpose. She says that her mother inside the Erdtree gave her a purpose, though she initially cannot remember it. After reaching Leyndell, she reclaims it and explicitly tells the Tarnished that she now acts of her own volition. She chooses to become kindling for the Flame of Ruin.

If the player inherits the Frenzied Flame in an attempt to spare her, Melina rejects the act, ends their accord, and promises to deliver Destined Death should the Tarnished become Lord of Chaos.

Her refusal matters. Saving somebody from sacrifice is not necessarily respect. If rescue removes her right to say no, it still disposes of her life on her behalf.

No observer can enter Melina’s mind and prove that her desire is uncontaminated by mother, mission, or world. No human desire emerges from a vacuum. The meaningful questions are whether she can examine the purpose again, reject alternatives, affirm it, and assume the act as hers.

Melina transforms “the purpose my mother gave me” into “the purpose I choose to fulfill.” Ranni considers the assignment itself intolerable and discards the body along with it.

The game does not require them to reach the same answer. It asks whether the answer can belong to the person living it.

The final essay turns to the player. The Ring waits, and each possible ending makes the Tarnished decide something whose cost cannot remain his own.

Based on FromSoftware's 2022 Elden Ring, directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki. It does not cover Shadow of the Erdtree. Because the game's narrative is distributed across dialogue and item descriptions, confirmed detail is distinguished from interpretation. Full spoilers.
