Gerald holds up the engagement ring. Sheila does not take it. He has found reasons to think that the evening's interrogation may have been a deception, and he wants to know whether things can now be put right between them. She needs time. In a room rapidly recovering its confidence, the ring is one object that cannot simply be restored to its former place.

This exchange comes near the end of J. B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls. The visitor calling himself Inspector Goole has left. He has connected the Birling family's actions, and Gerald's, with the death of a young woman. Now his account is being examined. Is he a police officer? Did everyone encounter the same woman? Has anyone actually died? These are legitimate questions, even when some of those asking them desperately want a reassuring answer.

Sheila herself has already questioned his identity, before Gerald returns with new information. This matters. The distinction is not between people who accept responsibility and people who exercise judgment. Sheila can remain troubled by what she has done while asking whether the man who questioned them was what he claimed to be. Self-examination does not require permanent credulity.

Gerald has spoken to a local policeman. Mr Birling then calls the chief constable and confirms that there is no Inspector Goole on the local force. The visitor's claimed authority has been undermined. His manner of entering their lives and collecting their private histories deserves reconsideration. The information does not become worthless because it is welcome to people whose behaviour we dislike.

But the relief soon exceeds the discovery. For Mr Birling, discrediting the investigator seems to offer a way of restoring the entire evening. He wants more than release from a stranger's further questions. He wants the things already disclosed to become private again, and the discomfort they produced to lose its claim on the household. These desires travel together, although they are not the same.

There was never a single collective repentance to be reversed. Mrs Birling has continued to defend what she did. Different members of the family have been silent for different reasons. Some have begun to reconsider their actions; others fear exposure and its consequences. The disappearance of a threat reveals these differences rather than suddenly creating them.

Gerald next examines the photographs. Those who were shown a picture saw it separately, without comparing it with the others. He did not see one himself. Their memories of individual encounters therefore do not independently establish the continuous story the Inspector has told. The joins between the pieces need checking as much as the pieces themselves.

This is a real gap, but it remains a gap. Nobody has now observed the Inspector switching photographs. Nor has anyone proved that the women were different. Uncertainty cannot belong exclusively to the accuser, but neither can it become the property of those looking for an escape. A possible flaw in the connecting story has not made the remembered encounters disappear.

When Sheila asks Gerald about the summer, he still acknowledges his relationship with another woman and expresses regret. The identity of the visitor is not the only basis on which Gerald knows what he did. Sheila can accept her fiancé's reasoning about the evidence and continue to reconsider her engagement. Being accused together has not obliged them to recover their ease together.

The question of a death remains. Gerald calls the infirmary. He is told that no girl has died there that day, that nobody has been brought in after drinking disinfectant, and that there has been no suicide there for months. Mr Birling offers him a drink. Fear begins to turn into congratulation.

There would be something perverse about wishing a woman dead in order to vindicate the seriousness of one's earlier feelings. Relief at the possibility that she is alive is entirely understandable. But relief can concern different things: another person's survival, the absence of a disaster, or the apparent disappearance of any need to explain oneself. The same exhalation can lead towards very different next actions.

The hospital's answer also has a scope. It reports what has happened there, during the relevant period. It does not investigate the subsequent lives of everyone these people have encountered. Harm does not begin to count only when it reaches the worst possible outcome. A claim about a fatal chain of events may need revision while particular acts of cruelty, carelessness, or exploitation remain open to judgment.

Mr Birling imitates the Inspector and makes fun of the children's alarm. Sheila moves towards the door, without yet leaving. He tells them to go to bed and stop being hysterical; their mother says that by morning they will find it amusing too. The parents are no longer merely disputing evidence. They are supplying the children with an authorised description of their own experience: they were frightened and tired, and sensible people will soon recover.

For Sheila, this is another pressure. If she remains serious, her seriousness can be dismissed as a failure to catch up with the latest news. The stranger has gone, but the family is still deciding what changes the evening is allowed to leave behind. Normality is being offered on condition that the children stop wanting anything from what they have learned.

Then Gerald raises the ring. His wish to repair the relationship may be genuine. Yet it still needs to pass through Sheila's answer. She does not announce an irrevocable separation. She says it is too soon. She cannot decide the future now, and uncertainty about the future does not oblige her to resume the engagement in the meantime.

Her refusal does not repay the injury she has caused someone else. Nor does Eric's agreement with her solve his own responsibility. What they preserve is more modest: the recognition that escaping punishment would not make change unnecessary. How they will live afterwards remains an unanswered practical question.

Finally, the telephone rings. Mr Birling reports that a girl has just died on the way to the infirmary and that a police inspector is coming to ask questions. The newcomer has not entered when the curtain falls. The family's regained safety vanishes, but the call does not systematically answer every earlier uncertainty.

A dead woman should be more than the final device that makes this family learn a lesson. If only a death could make other lives matter to them, their own fear would still occupy the centre of the story. The new call changes the situation. It need not be what first makes their previous conduct worth examining.

The unaccepted ring recalls a decision made before that warning arrived. Sheila had already found that she could not continue as before, at the very moment when consequences seemed to be receding. Whatever the next inspector may establish, the time she has asked for is hers to use. A stranger's doubtful identity cannot cancel it.
