Zhou Puyuan asks who has opened the window. Lu Shiping, visiting her daughter in his household, goes to close it. She is about to leave when he calls her back. In Cao Yu's Thunderstorm, recognition begins with a habit before it becomes a name. A familiar movement interrupts an ordinary dismissal. The person whose presence he has scarcely considered suddenly touches something he believes belongs to the past.
They once had two children together. He believes she died long ago. At first they can therefore talk about her almost as though she were somebody else: a young woman from Wuxi, remembered by a man who has continued with his life. His account grants her the standing of a respectable family's daughter. Shiping corrects him. The woman was a servant's daughter.
This is more than a difference between a flattering description and a humiliating one. A young woman's early death can become a story centred on the man who lost her. The expulsion of a servant who has just given birth asks different questions. Who had the power to send her away? What was required of her, and what became of the children? Her correction restores actions and inequalities that his elegiac account has smoothed out.
Her survival also divides thirty years into two kinds of time. For him, they have passed since a loss. For her, they are years she had to live. She has worked, married, raised children, and encountered other disappointments. The woman standing in the room has not simply stepped out of an old photograph. She arrives with a history he does not possess.
The conversation turns to old shirts. Shiping knows the details of the embroidery and mending. He recognises her, and looks towards her photograph. The clothes need not even be taken from their box: her knowledge of them is enough to cross the distance between the visitor and the remembered woman.
The next questions are abrupt. What has she come for? Who sent her? Recognition does not open a space in which she can immediately tell him what her life has been. It brings the possibility that her arrival has a purpose directed against him. Someone he could safely mourn has become someone whose intentions he needs to establish.
This need not mean every feeling he ever had was false. Recognition can awaken fear as well as tenderness. The important thing is what his fear does to the encounter. Before he asks what she has endured, he asks why she is here. The visitor's claim to be a person with her own present becomes, almost at once, a problem for the present he has arranged.
A photograph cannot reopen the night on which she was driven out. An old shirt cannot say that three decades have meant something different to the woman who once mended it. Objects can preserve his relationship with memory without asking him to change his relationship with anyone alive. Shiping's presence makes such a change unavoidable.
He lists his acts of remembrance: the furniture she liked, her birthday, the habit of keeping the window closed. He presents these as evidence that he has neither forgotten her nor been untouched by remorse. The list matters as his account of himself. It does not give us independent access to every year of his feeling. More immediately, it answers a question different from the one her return brings into the room.
Remembering a birthday can coexist with knowing almost nothing about how its owner has lived. Keeping a room familiar does not prepare someone to hear that the person associated with it has changed. What he has retained becomes part of an argument for the adequacy of his remembrance. What she needs to speak about includes precisely what the room cannot contain.
There is a further burden here. The person who suffered may find herself expected to acknowledge how much the other person has suffered from remembering it. Before telling her own story, she must reassure him that his regret counts. Shiping owes no such preliminary consolation. His remorse may be real, and she may still have grievances it has never answered.
The exchange moves towards practical arrangements. She asks to see the elder son left in the Zhou household. Zhou Puyuan agrees, while declaring that the Lu family must never return afterwards. He offers money. She takes the cheque and tears it up. Each matter seems to bring the meeting nearer a conclusion, but she has not agreed that a conclusion he can manage will settle the years she has lived.
Money could do real things for someone who has known hardship. Accepting compensation need not signify forgiveness, and refusing it is not the only way to preserve dignity. The problem here is the power to name an ending. An offer made by one person cannot, by itself, determine what the other person's experience is worth or when discussion of it is over.
Nor does Shiping demand that the whole family immediately recognise her. She wants to see her son, without requiring him to acknowledge her as his mother. The restraint is shaped by what she understands about his position and upbringing, and by her own vulnerability. It is a limited request, not evidence that she has no further feelings.
Even that request cannot control the encounter that follows. Zhou Ping, the son she has longed to see, strikes her other son, Lu Dahai. The household servants join the assault. Shiping intervenes, confronting a relation between her children that neither her memories nor the private conversation with their father could arrange in advance.
The child she remembers has grown into someone capable of hurting another child she loves. Her attempt to speak to him almost becomes a declaration of who she is; the sentence changes before it reaches that destination. She leaves with Dahai. The reunion has not delivered even the modest, protected moment she had imagined.
This is what keeps Shiping from being merely a witness called to establish whether Zhou Puyuan is a hypocrite. She has more to face than his character. Her children have lives, allegiances, and actions that place new demands on her. Remembering them does not give her authority over who they have become.
The window at the beginning now carries more than a clue to identity. Familiarity has brought the past into the room, but has supplied no ready terms for receiving the person who has survived it. Zhou Puyuan can go on keeping the clothes. After this meeting, the contents of a box can no longer be the whole measure of what it means not to have forgotten.
