Chapter 12 of 81

The Five Colors Are Not Too Many

Han Qin

NFT。

An Experience Anyone Who Has Scrolled TikTok Will Recognize

Anyone who has scrolled TikTok knows this feeling:

One video — great. Twenty videos — still great. After an hour, you want to do something else —

And find you can't.

Open a book, can't read.
Open your own project, can't start.
Talk to a friend, attention scattered.

This happens every day in 2026.

What Laozi describes in Chapter 12 is exactly this —

Two thousand four hundred years ago.

Chapter 12 opens with five lines:

Five lines, each describing a phenomenon we recognize right now.

But to read this chapter correctly, you need to read the two characters "五色" (wǔ sè, "the five colors") correctly first.

二、The Five Colors Are Not Too Many Colors

The most common reading of this chapter across the centuries is —

The five colors = too many colors.

On this reading, the whole chapter becomes a health-and-moderation rule: too many colors will dazzle the eye, too much music will deafen the ear, too many flavors will ruin the palate. Laozi becomes a temperance counselor urging restraint of the senses.

But this chapter is probably not about excess.

In Laozi's time, "five colors" did not mean "many colors in general."

The five colors — blue-green, red, yellow, white, black — were a mature classification system of the Zhou dynasty. These five were coupled to the Five Phases (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). Five colors corresponded to Five Phases; five tones corresponded to Five Phases; five flavors corresponded to Five Phases — cultural common knowledge that every literate person of Laozi's time would have known.

"Five" points precisely to an already-classified set of five categories, not to "many."

So first, adjust how you read "five": not "a lot" but "an already-classified five categories."

That one adjustment reverses the whole chapter's meaning.

Five colors are not too many colors — they are the five classified categories of color.
Five tones are not too much sound — they are the five classified categories of tone.
Five flavors are not too many tastes — they are the five classified categories of flavor.

In today's terms —

This is like all TikTok videos already sorted by algorithm to match your preferences.
All Spotify playlists already sorted by your listening history.
All Netflix content already sorted by your past viewing.
All Yelp restaurants already sorted by the tags you previously rated.

You are not seeing a variety of videos — you are seeing a pre-classified variety.
You are not hearing a variety of music — you are hearing a pre-classified variety.

This is structurally identical to what Laozi means by "the five colors" — what the outside gives you is not the raw thing but the pre-classified thing.

三、Eye-Blindness Is Not Going Blind

With that foundation, reread "eye-blindness" (目盲).

The natural reading: see too many colors and your eyes go bad.

But Laozi does not say "dazzled" — he says blind.

Blind means genuinely cannot see.

Cannot see what?

Not the five colors — you see those. You see them every day.

Cannot see — color itself.

Laozi's contemporaries divided the infinite spectrum into five categories: blue-green, red, yellow, white, black. The classification is useful — you can say "this is a blue-green garment." But when a person's visual position receives only according to these five categories — seeing a color and immediately filing it as "this is blue-green" or "this is red" — the person loses the capacity to experience the continuous spectrum of color itself.

All the infinite shades between blue-green and red, the gradations of saturation, the qualities of luster and texture, the sense of temperature — all of it swallowed by the construct "five colors."

The person thinks they are seeing color. In fact they are only recognizing five category labels.

Eye-blindness is not broken eyes. Light still enters.

It is "seeing" itself being occupied by construct — incoming light immediately conscripted by the five-color labels. Genuine "seeing" no longer happens.

In today's terms —

After an hour of scrolling TikTok, your visual position has been filled by algorithmically classified content.

You are not blind — you are looking.

But what you are looking at is not the world — it is the algorithmically classified world.

Put the phone down and look at the tree outside the window — you will find the tree seems "boring."

The tree is not boring. Your visual position has been packed with the algorithm's classification construct for an hour, and you have lost the capacity to perceive the unclassified.

Eye-blindness.

Ear-deafness works the same way.

You are not deaf — you listen to Spotify every day.

But you cannot hear sound itself.

The infinite range of pitch is divided into five tones: gong, shang, jue, zhi, yu. Today's version — Spotify classifies all music by labels like "relaxation," "workout," "focus," "sleep."

Microtonal intervals, timbral detail, rhythmic breathing, resonance and decay — all swallowed by the classification construct.

Ear-deafness is not unable to hear sound; it is an ear trained by classification that has lost the capacity to hear sound itself.

Mouth-loss works the same way.

Shuang (爽) in classical Chinese carries the meaning "loss" — losing the sense of taste.

Eating too many pre-classified five-flavor foods, the tongue recognizes only these five categories. The transitions between flavors, the temperature and texture of food, the layering of taste — all gone.

Today's version — Yelp five-star ratings, food influencers, restaurant tags pre-classify food for you.

After visiting several "five-star influencer restaurants," you eat at the neighborhood place and feel "it's just okay."

The neighborhood place is not bad. Your palate position has been packed with classification construct and lost the capacity for the unclassified taste.

Mouth-loss.

四、The Heart-Position and the Action-Position

The first three lines are about sensory positions. The final two extend the same thing to heart-position and action-position.

Riding at full gallop, hunting, pursuing — fast-paced, high-stimulation activity.

This is not saying hunting is bad. In Laozi's time, hunting was normal productive work.

What Laozi singles out is that it is a typical scenario where the heart-position is occupied by strong construct for a sustained period — stimulation continuous, adrenaline continuous, next quarry continuous — the heart-position has no room left for anything else.

Today's version —

Short video feed. One high-stimulation piece after another, each more stimulating than the last, the flow occupying the heart-position continuously.

After scrolling for an hour, try stopping and sitting in stillness — can't. The heart-position has been occupied by high-stimulation construct and cannot return to stable operation.

"Heart runs wild" — not madness; the heart-position occupied by one strong construct has lost the capacity for steady operation.

Hard-to-get goods — rare and precious things.

Today's version —

Limited-edition sneakers. Limited-release watches. An influencer's same-as bag. NFTs. An experience "only a few can afford."

When a person sees hard-to-get goods, the action-position is filled by the construct "must obtain this hard-to-get thing" — the whole person's direction of action is hijacked by this construct.

Walking, talking, doing — all orbiting this construct.

"Action obstructed" — action hijacked by an external construct; the genuine direction of action has lost its space.

Five lines together —

Visual position (five colors), auditory position (five tones), taste position (five flavors), heart-position (riding and hunting), action-position (hard-to-get goods).

Each position can be packed by a construct. Each position packed loses its original function.

These five lines are not five scattered pieces of health advice. They are demonstrations of the same structural problem across five positions — construct packs position, function fails.

This is the exact inverse of Chapter 11.

Chapter 11: leave room within the construct so operation can happen inside.
Chapter 12: construct packs the position full; operation inside ceases.

Fill the hub hole — the axle cannot turn.
Pack the visual position with five colors — seeing does not happen.

Same thing, two faces.

五、Three Characters

There is a significant three-character textual difference in the second half of this chapter.

The silk manuscript reads: "是以圣人之治也" — "Therefore, in the sage's governance..."

The standard text reads: "是以圣人" — "Therefore, the sage..."

Remove "之治也" — three characters — and the whole chapter's center of gravity shifts.

The silk-manuscript reading: The sage's governance acts for the belly and not for the eye. The subject is governance; the object is the people.

The standard-text reading: The sage himself acts for the belly and not for the eye. The subject is personal cultivation; the object is the self.

The difference is enormous:

In the silk manuscript, the first five lines describe the phenomenon of people having their sensory, heart, and action positions colonized by various constructs — and then the second half discusses how the sage as ruler responds. The whole chapter is a governance diagnosis.

In the standard text, the first five lines become "the harms of sensory excess" — and the second half becomes "the sage himself eats to be full, doesn't look at scenery" — a personal health prescription.

The difference is so large that —

In the silk manuscript, Laozi's "sage's governance" points at the one who establishes constructs — the ruler must not pack the people's sensory positions.

In the standard text, "the sage" points at the one who receives constructs — you, the reader, must restrain your desires.

The direction of the blade is reversed.

What was a critique of the ruling class becomes moral instruction to the people.

六、For the Belly, Not for the Eye

Reading this chapter against the silk manuscript, the final line's meaning is clear —

"Therefore, in the sage's governance, act for the belly and not for the eye. Hence: set aside that, take up this."

Belly and eye both appeared in Chapter 3. "Fill their bellies" and "do not display what can be desired" are the same set of governance operations.

Belly is the foundation layer — the body's root, the basis of life. Physiological nutrition, stability of life, the most basic conditions of survival.

Eye is the sensory position of the emergent layer — the position at which the eyes receive visual stimulus. The eye-position is easily packed by the five colors, as discussed above.

Act for the bellythe ruler does nurturing work on the foundation layer. Make sure the people have food, shelter, stable lives. This is solid, substantive deepening work.

Not for the eyethe ruler does not establish constructs on the emergent layer to pack the people's sensory positions. The people's eye-position should be left open for them to see for themselves, to receive their own genuine impressions of color, sound, and flavor, to make their own judgments.

The ruler should not be responsible for filling the people's eye-position with content.

Together —

The ruler does work only at the belly layer (deepening the foundation layer) and does not establish constructs at the eye layer (making room in the emergent layer).

This is the boundary between nurturing and colonizing —

A nurturing subject does work at the nurtured one's foundation layer, makes room at the emergent layer.
A colonizing subject establishes constructs in the nurtured one's emergent layer (telling others what to see, think, pursue), while stripping the foundation layer (leaving others without a base, drifting wherever the construct carries them).

Colonizing is the inverted two-layer treatment.

Read to this point and go back to the chapter's five lines —

Five colors, five tones, five flavors, riding and hunting, hard-to-get goods —

Every one is someone else establishing a construct to pack the people's emergent-layer positions.

In today's terms —

The one establishing the "five colors" is a content platform's algorithm; the one establishing the "five tones" is a music platform's recommendation engine; the one establishing "hard-to-get goods" is a marketing team's scarcity design.

Every initiator of these actions is not the people themselves — it is some external construct colonizing the people's positions.

Laozi tells the ruler in Chapter 12 — do not be that initiator.

In today's terms, this chapter speaks to everyone who "wants to have influence" —

Do not be the party packing other people's emergent layers.

Whether you are a platform, a brand, an educator, a mentor, a parent —

Not establishing constructs in another's emergent layer is the boundary line between nurturing and colonizing.

Chapter 12 is a governance diagnosis.

It diagnoses the phenomenon of five positions being colonized.
It identifies the ruler's two-layer treatment principle — foundation layer as root, emergent layer as flower.
It draws the boundary between nurturing and colonizing with great clarity.

Two thousand four hundred years later, every line still describes the present.
