The essays are primarily independent visual readings of the museum image. The sources below have distinct roles: object facts, historical context, contemporary theory and image licensing. General biography and studies of other paintings are not presented as technical findings about this work.
The painting
1. Cleveland Museum of Art. The Large Tree, 1891, accession 1975.263. - Artist, title, date, medium, unframed dimensions, credit line and inscriptions; also the museum’s account of the foreground sequence and shade/sunlight contrast. - The catalogue identifies four women in the foreground. The doorway contains an additional smaller figure visible in the image; the essays do not describe the entire painting as containing only four people.
2. Cleveland Museum of Art. Official collections API record. - API artwork ID 148297. Confirms CC0, print-image URL and size listing, inscriptions “Te raau rahi” and “P Gauguin 91”, and museum metadata. Actual downloaded bytes and pixel dimensions are recorded in image_manifest.json. - Catalogue bibliography was consulted only as a bibliography. No unread item concerning photography or Puvis de Chavannes is treated as proof of a model for this painting. No work-specific pigment, X-ray or layer report is claimed. - The 1975 accession prefix and the record’s 1976 accession date are not used to infer an acquisition story; the essays give the accession number and credit line without assigning a donation year.
Historical context
3. Cindy Kang. Paul Gauguin (1848–1903). Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, March 2011. - Supports the limited contextual points used in the essay: the colonial pavilions of the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle influenced Gauguin’s overseas expectations; his artistic ambitions remained directed towards the Parisian avant-garde. - It also discusses the conjunction of decorative pattern and figuration in Gauguin’s Tahitian work. The present essay develops its own image-specific analysis. - Its discussion of photographic sources for other paintings is not transferred to The Large Tree. No specific photograph, sitter identity, garment history or tree species is asserted here.
Optional theory
4. Han Qin (秦汉). SAE Judgment and Aesthetics — In Tribute to Kant / SAE 判断力与美学 · 致敬康德, second edition, 2026. DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19296710. CC BY 4.0. - The optional section uses §3.2, “The Internality of Context in Beauty / 美的背景内在性”, as a contemporary question about the viewer’s judgment. - It compares the pictorial invitation to approach with the distance maintained by the figures’ orientation and occlusion. Colonial context informs the question of whether visual access amounts to understanding the people depicted; it is not presented as proof of a documented target audience for this painting. This painting-specific exercise is the essay’s application, not a claim made by the original SAE text. - No numbered ray is assigned to the work, and no inference is made about the artist’s self-legislation, the figures’ inner states, or mutual recognition between them.
The object image is released under CC0. That status does not make the museum’s research prose public domain. All essays are independently written; no institutional endorsement is implied.
Paul Gauguin (1848–1903), The Large Tree, 1891. Inscribed Te raau rahi at lower left and signed P Gauguin 91 at lower right. Oil on canvas, 74 × 92.8 cm, unframed.
- 3400 × 2695 pixels, RGB JPEG, 4,646,196 bytes - Downloaded museum file copied without alteration; no resaving, resizing or colour-profile conversion - Original embedded ICC profile retained: 3,144 bytes - SHA-256: 37496e735aa007214a93ec34d05c1a9e99dffd60d155783aa8292f997c343496

Two details
Coordinates use the full image’s top-left corner as (0, 0), with the right and bottom coordinates excluded, as in a standard pixel crop. Each detail is saved as PNG without resizing; decoded RGB pixels are checked against the corresponding master-image region. The embedded ICC bytes are unchanged.
1. images/detail_tree_shelter.png - Crop: left 34, top 485, right 1836, bottom 2183 - Size: 1802 × 1698 pixels - Purpose: the trunk’s branching, the canopy/roof overlap and the left seated pair remain together in one view.
2. images/detail_roof_figures.png - Crop: left 1462, top 458, right 2720, bottom 2264 - Size: 1258 × 1806 pixels - Purpose: the roof’s leaf pattern, doorway figure, nearer red-clad figure and right-hand trunk can be compared across depth.
No adjustments to colour, contrast or sharpness; no denoising, restoration, inpainting, reconstruction or generated content. Crops change the field of view only. The master remains a JPEG supplied by the museum; “lossless” refers to preserving the decoded source pixels in the PNG details, not to recovering information absent from that JPEG.
Every essay includes localised captions and alternative text for all three images. The same text is also listed in localized_image_text.json for reuse. Image dimensions, source links, crop boxes, ICC checks and SHA-256 values are recorded in image_manifest.json.
