Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.
Utena tells Anthy that she does not have to obey her. Anthy agrees. Their difficulty is contained in that exchange.
Utena invites her to act freely, use her name, stop performing domestic tasks, and choose what she wants. Anthy accepts each proposal with the same courtesy she brings to an order. If told to do as she wishes, she can answer that she wishes to serve Utena. The liberating statement returns as compliance.
Kindness is real here, but kindness alone cannot change the grammar in which it is received. Utena wants equality and continues to occupy the position whose words decide what equality will look like. Even the sentence “you are not my possession” is spoken by the person whom the institution recognizes as possessor.
For much of the series, Anthy appears composed. She tends roses, cares for Chuchu, attends class, smiles, and completes the work attached to her role. That surface has sometimes been taken as evidence that she feels nothing or wants nothing. The later episodes make such certainty impossible. Anthy names her suffering, approaches suicide, injures Utena, and describes ways in which she has used Utena's innocence.
Her lack of visible resistance therefore does not reveal an empty interior. It reveals how little access anyone has to it. Pain does not always emerge as protest; a person can learn to route pain back into the duties of the position that produced it.
This is why rescue becomes so difficult. Outsiders tend to look for a hidden, intact preference and then claim to know what the captive “really” wants. Utena is more generous than most, but the same danger remains. Anthy's silence cannot be converted into authorization for the dueling system, and it cannot be converted into a blank cheque for her rescuer.
Anthy also acts. She keeps secrets, assists Akio's arrangements, wounds people, and sometimes answers Utena's care with calculated hurt. The series refuses the comfort of a victim whose moral purity makes rescue simple. Long domination does not erase agency, but neither does agency retroactively make domination voluntary.
Utena's wish to become a prince complicates the relation further. She was once led out of her own coffin by a princely figure and decided to occupy that role herself. Saving Anthy is directed toward Anthy's need, but it also confirms the self Utena wants to be.
Neither fact cancels the other. The friendship matters, the performance of princehood matters, and Anthy's responses remain irreducible to both. The series takes thirty-nine episodes because no benevolent command can manufacture a first-person answer. At most, another person can remain present long enough for one eventually to be spoken.
Primary text: Revolutionary Girl Utena, the thirty-nine-episode 1997 J.C.Staff television anime created by Be-Papas and directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara. The 1999 film Adolescence of Utena is outside this series' scope.
