The Week the War Began

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.

Catastrophe before the first scene

Later Universal Century chronologies call the opening phase of the One Year War the One Week Battle: nuclear and chemical weapons are used, space colonies are destroyed, and Operation British sends a colony toward Earth. The television series’ famous narration uses a broader interval. A little over a month after war begins, it says, half the human population is dead.

That distinction matters factually but not narratively. By the time Amuro’s story starts in September, mass death has already been compressed into background information. The catastrophe is not a climax or even an episode. It is the condition under which named lives begin appearing.

Operation British exposes the mechanism of that compression. A populated Side 2 colony is emptied through mass killing, fitted with engines, redirected, and treated as a projectile against Jaburo, the Federation’s fortified headquarters. Residents must first disappear before the habitat can enter a planning room as available mass.

A failed operation that changes a planet

The colony breaks apart during reentry and misses Jaburo. Under the criterion written into the plan—destroy the command center—the operation fails. Under every wider criterion, it transforms Earth: cities and landscapes are devastated, climate and oceans disturbed, lives far outside the target consumed.

This reveals two objects that military language can blur. An enemy’s present capacity to fight consists of fleets, factories, supply, and command. The minimum conditions under which anyone can live after the fighting consist of people, soil, water, settlement, and a world stable enough to rebuild. Operation British attacks the second while failing to eliminate the first.

A method can therefore fail by its own metric while succeeding irreversibly outside that metric. A narrow after-action report has no field for the most consequential result.

A boundary drawn afterward

The Antarctic Treaty prohibits nuclear, chemical, biological, and further colony-drop attacks and regulates prisoners of war. The line appears only after the first phase demonstrates what lies beyond it. Later setting materials give both sides strategic reasons to accept the restriction; moral awakening is not required for a useful boundary.

Even the operation’s proper name helps make the act administratively ordinary. Once catastrophe has a title, timetable, engineering team, and objective, people can discuss it without saying what must happen to the people inside the material being moved.

Gundam begins by asking viewers to remember that every clean military noun has a hidden subject. “Colony drop” is not an event that happens to a cylinder. It starts with somebody deciding that the inhabitants no longer count as part of the thing being described.

Primary text: Mobile Suit Gundam, the forty-three-episode Sunrise television series directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino (1979–1980). Later Universal Century chronologies and Yoshikazu Yasuhiko’s Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin are identified when used; the film trilogy and later UC anime are otherwise outside this series’ scope.
