Five essays on the devastation before episode one, a refusal preserved in later canon, civilians made into a military unit, a superweapon that destroys peace talks, and the small human meaning left after victory.
The original Mobile Suit Gundam begins after the scale of war has already exceeded the story’s ability to individualize its dead. It then spends forty-three episodes restoring names, faces, quarrels, and places to a few people who would otherwise remain military quantities.
These essays distinguish the 1979–1980 television text from later Universal Century chronology and The Origin where those sources add detail. The distinction matters: Gundam’s long afterlife should deepen the original without silently replacing what it actually showed. Full-series spoilers follow.
Nuclear and chemical attacks culminate in a colony drop that misses its military target while permanently damaging the world that survives it.
A soldier already implicated in mass killing refuses Operation British and is punished. Dissent becomes insubordination when an institution has no place to hear it.
A boy who can read the manual climbs into an unfinished weapon; a ship of refugees becomes a unit and is repeatedly calculated as one.
The most effective shot in the war kills both delegations and extends the war. A hierarchy that cannot process dissent ends by processing it through murder.
The last line does not redeem the war or interpret the dead. It names a few surviving people and a direction through the wreckage toward them.
