Reading March Comes in Like a Lion

Five essays on an unspoken condition of adoption, a deliberately lost match, a household that asks for nothing, standing beside the bullied, and whether the skill that secured a home ever became Rei's own.

March Comes in Like a Lion makes decisive ethical structures out of meals, matches, school corridors, rent, and the quiet calculations by which a child tries to deserve a place. No villain designs Rei's childhood. Harm emerges from good intentions organized around one narrow axis of value.

These essays follow the first two anime seasons while drawing on the manga where useful. They resist calling the Kawamoto household a cure: care is real, the family's burdens remain, and no relationship is asked to solve every wound. Spoilers through season two follow.
