Red Boy
红孩儿。号圣婴大王。牛魔王和铁扇公主的儿子。
有手段——三昧真火，悟空扛不住。有靠山——牛魔王，取经路上最大的势力之一。
但这些都不是最麻烦的。
最麻烦的是：他是悟空的过去。
故事
红孩儿占了火云洞，要吃唐僧肉。悟空去打。红孩儿放三昧真火。悟空以为自己不怕火——炼丹炉里烧了四十九天都没事。但三昧真火不是凡火。悟空差点被烧死。
悟空搬了龙王来下雨，灭不了三昧真火。水灭不了这种火。
最后请了观音。观音用玉净瓶收了红孩儿，收他做了善财童子。
这一难的表面是悟空打不过红孩儿。但结构比这深得多。
牛魔王的儿子
红孩儿是谁？
牛魔王的儿子。
牛魔王是谁？
悟空大闹天宫之前的结拜兄弟。七大圣之一。那是"孙猴子"时代的关系。花果山称王，意气风发，跟一群妖王歃血为盟。那个时代的悟空不知道边界，不知道方向，不知道什么叫取经。他只知道能力，知道自由，知道"皇帝轮流做"。
牛魔王就是那个时代的见证人。
红孩儿是那个时代的下一代。
悟空的三层记忆
第八篇讲了唐僧的三藏——三层认知结构。我知道什么。我知道我不知道什么。我不知道我不知道什么。
悟空也有三层。但不是认知的三层。是记忆的三层。
第一层：我记得什么。金箍棒，七十二变，取经路上的一切。紧箍咒的疼，三打白骨精的委屈，如来手掌里的那泡尿。这些是他活着的记忆。每天都在用。
第二层：我记得我忘了什么。花果山的日子，水帘洞，那些跟着他的猴子。他知道那些东西在，他只是不去想了。他记得自己把那些事放下了。
第三层：我忘了我忘了什么。
牛魔王。结拜。那个"孙猴子"时代的自己。那些关系，那些承诺，那些义气。他不是放下了。他是忘了。忘到了他连"我忘了这件事"都不记得。
红孩儿就是第三层突然出现在他面前。
你的过去不跟着你变
悟空上了取经路。他变了。他从孙猴子变成了孙悟空。他有了方向。他有了师父。他有了那个"能"和"做"之间的间隙。他走了那么远。
但他的过去没有跟着他变。
牛魔王还是牛魔王。该占山占山，该当妖王当妖王。他没有上取经路。他没有被五行山压过。他没有被紧箍咒磨过。他还在悟空离开的那个地方。
红孩儿更不用说。他根本不认识"孙悟空"。他认识的是"孙猴子"——他爸的结拜兄弟。一个跟他爸一样的妖王。你现在跟我说你是取经人？你是我爸的兄弟。你是一只猴子。你是跟我们一路的。
悟空的新身份在他的旧关系面前不好使。
你改了。你的过去没改。你走了十万里。你的过去还在原地。而且你的过去不只是你自己的。你的过去里有别人。别人记得那个旧的你。别人的儿子记得那个旧的你。
你忘了。他们没忘。
三昧真火
红孩儿的三昧真火为什么厉害？
悟空不怕火。炼丹炉烧了四十九天，他出来了，还练成了火眼金睛。凡火对他无效。
但三昧真火不是凡火。龙王下雨灭不了它。
为什么灭不了？
因为三昧真火不是从外面烧过来的。三昧真火是从里面烧的。它烧的是你自己。
悟空以为他不怕火。他的经验告诉他：火来了我扛住就行。但红孩儿的火不是"外面的火来了你扛住"。是"你自己的东西在烧你"。
你的过去在烧你。你忘了你忘了的那些东西，现在变成火，从里面往外烧。你扛不住。因为你不知道它从哪来的。你以为你不怕火，但你不知道这种火跟你以前见过的火不是同一种东西。
水灭不了它。能力灭不了它。因为这不是一个能力问题。
观音收了红孩儿
最后是观音来解决的。
观音没有灭火。她收了红孩儿。把他收为善财童子。
这个解法跟打赢完全不同。不是消灭敌人。是把敌人收进一个新的结构里。
红孩儿成了善财童子以后，他的三昧真火还在。他的本事还在。但他不再用这些东西来烧人了。他被放进了一个新的位置。
这跟悟空自己的经历是同构的。悟空的本事从来没有被拿走过。他是被放进了取经这个新的结构里。红孩儿的本事也没有被拿走。他是被放进了观音身边这个新的结构里。
过去不能被消灭。但过去可以被重新安置。
悟空打不赢红孩儿。不是因为能力不够。是因为你打不赢你自己的过去。你不能用金箍棒把你的旧关系打死。那是你的一部分。它需要被收，不是被灭。
忘了自己忘了什么
这一难的物自体是什么？
是你忘了自己忘了什么。
唐僧的物自体是在认知层面：不知道自己不知道什么。他的路是把不知道的变成知道的。
悟空的物自体是在记忆层面：忘了自己忘了什么。他的路不是"学习"。他的路是"想起来"。想起来他曾经是谁。想起来他跟谁有过关系。想起来那些关系不会因为他变了就消失。
红孩儿站在他面前的时候，他想起来了。不是全想起来了——第三层的东西不是一次能想完的。但他想起来一些了。
他想起来：他不是从取经路上开始存在的。他有一个"之前"。那个"之前"里有人。那些人还在。那些人的孩子也在。他的过去是活的。它不会因为他不记得就停止存在。
你走了十万里。你的过去也走了十万里。只是它走的方向跟你不一样。
你们在红孩儿这里撞上了。
Red Boy. Called Prince-Sage King. Son of Bull King and Iron-Fan Princess.
Has means—Samadhi-fire Wukong can't withstand. Has backing—Bull King, one of the journey's greatest powers.
But none of that is the worst.
Worst is: he's Wukong's past.
The Story
Red Boy occupies Fire Cloud Cave, wants to eat the Monk. Wukong fights. Red Boy unleashes Samadhi-fire. Wukong thought he didn't fear fire—burned forty-nine days in the furnace and survived. But Samadhi-fire isn't ordinary. Nearly kills him.
Wukong summons the Dragon King to rain. Can't extinguish this fire. Water won't work.
Finally, Guanyin intervenes. She captures Red Boy with the Jade Vase, makes him the Treasurer of Wealth.
On the surface: Wukong loses. But the structure runs deeper.

Who is Red Boy?
Bull King's son.
Who is Bull King?
Wukong's sworn brother before ransacking Heaven. One of Seven Great Sages. That was the "Monkey King's" era. Flower Fruit Mountain, calling himself ruler, blood-sworn with demon kings. That Wukong knew no boundaries, no direction, nothing of scripture-seeking. Only power, freedom, "emperors come and go."
Bull King was that age's witness.
Red Boy is that age's next generation.
Wukong's Three Layers of Memory
Recall: Tang Seng's three repositories are three cognitive layers. What I know. What I know I don't know. What I don't know I don't know.
Wukong has three layers too. But not cognitive—memory layers.
First: what I remember. Golden cudgel, seventy-two transforms, all the journey. Headband's ache, White Bone's hurt, that urine in Rulai's palm. His living memory. Used every day.
Second: what I remember I forgot. Flower Fruit Mountain days, Curtain-Falling Waterfall, the monkeys who followed him. He knows they exist, just doesn't think of them. Remembers putting them down.
Third: forgot that I forgot.
Bull King. Sworn oath. The "Monkey King" self. Those relationships, promises, honor. Not released—forgotten. Forgotten so completely he doesn't remember forgetting.
Red Boy appears before him from that third layer.
Your Past Doesn't Change With You
Wukong took the quest. Changed. From Monkey King to Sun Wukong. Found direction. Found the Monk. Found the gap between can and do. Walked so far.
But his past didn't change.
Bull King is still Bull King. Still occupies mountains, still reigns as demon king. Never took the quest. Never pressed under Five-Elements. Never ground by headband. Still where Wukong left him.
Red Boy less still. Doesn't know "Sun Wukong" at all. Knows "Monkey King"—his father's sworn brother. A demon king like his dad. Now you tell me you're scripture-seeking? You're my father's brother. A monkey. One of us.
Wukong's new identity fails against his old relationships.
You changed. Your past didn't. You walked 108,000 li. Your past stayed put. And your past isn't just yours. Others live in it. They remember old you. Someone's son remembers old you.
You forgot. They didn't.
Samadhi-Fire
Why is Red Boy's Samadhi-fire so strong?
Wukong fears nothing fire. Burned forty-nine days, came out fine, gained golden vision. Ordinary fire can't touch him.
Samadhi-fire isn't ordinary. Dragon King's rain can't kill it.
Why not?
Because Samadhi-fire doesn't come from outside. It comes from inside. It burns you.
Wukong thought he feared no fire. Experience taught: fire comes, endure. But Red Boy's fire isn't that. It's "yourself is burning you."
Your past burns you. What you forgot you forgot, now becomes fire burning from within. You can't stand it. Because you don't know it's there. You think you don't fear fire, but you don't know this fire is a different kind.
Water won't kill it. Power won't. Because it's not a power problem.
Guanyin Takes Red Boy
Finally, Guanyin solves it.
She doesn't kill the fire. She takes Red Boy. Makes him Treasurer of Wealth.
Different solution entirely. Not defeating enemy. Placing enemy in a new structure.
Red Boy becomes Treasurer, his Samadhi-fire remains. His abilities intact. But he no longer uses them to burn. He's placed in a new position.
Same structure as Wukong himself. His abilities never taken. He was placed in the quest's new structure. Red Boy's abilities aren't taken either. He's placed beside Guanyin's new structure.
Past can't be destroyed. But can be relocated.
Wukong can't beat Red Boy. Not power lacking. You can't beat your own past. Can't club your old relationships dead. That's part of you. It needs collecting, not killing.
Forgot That I Forgot
What's this trial's noumenon?
That you forgot you forgot.
Tang Seng's noumenon is cognitive: not knowing you don't know. His path: making unknowns known.
Wukong's is memorial: forgetting you forgot. His path isn't learning. It's remembering. Who he was. Who he knew. That relationships don't disappear because you changed.
Red Boy stood before him and he remembered. Not completely—third layer takes time. But some.
He remembered: he didn't start on the quest. He has a "before." That before held people. They exist still. Their children exist. His past is alive. Won't vanish because he forgot.
You walked 108,000 li. Your past walked too. Just in different directions.
You collide at Red Boy.
