The Pipa Demon's Cave
This difficulty deepens.
The earlier trials, no matter how dangerous, rested on a default assumption: the system will hold. Heaven, the Buddha-realm, Guanyin—someone can always catch you. However ferocious a demon, send for reinforcements and it's solved.
In the Pipa Demon's Cave, this assumption shatters.
The Story
The Scorpion Demon occupies the Pipa Cave, wanting to marry Tang Seng.
Tang Seng faces a woman who wants to marry him again. But this is nothing like the Kingdom of Women. The queen was sincere, human, understandable. The Scorpion Demon is not. She takes by force. She is a demon. Not an ordinary one.
Wukong comes to fight. Cannot win. The Scorpion Demon has a venomous stinger—one jab and it's over. Wukong gets hurt. Bajie comes to help, also gets hurt.
Call for reinforcements? From whom?
Guanyin? Guanyin says: I cannot manage this.
Why?
Because the Scorpion Demon stung Rulai.
Even the Buddha Was Stung
Stop and think about this sentence.
Rulai. The highest existence in all the Journey to the West. That palm. The one from which Wukong never escaped across 108,000 li.
The Scorpion Demon stung him.
The scripture says: Rulai was lecturing at the Thundersound Temple when the Scorpion Demon stung him. Rulai felt pain. He sent protective spirits to capture her. She escaped.
Rulai felt pain.
Rulai too has things he cannot break.
What does this mean? It means the Scorpion Demon is not an ordinary remainder. Not one person's remainder, not Wukong's, not Tang Seng's, not some bodhisattva's. She is the remainder of Heaven and the Buddha-realm combined. The remainder of the system itself.
The entire system—Heaven plus Buddhism plus all the forces on the scripture-seeking path—does not fully function before her. It's not about losing a fight. Her existence itself sits outside the system's boundary.
A super-remainder.
How Could the Team Deliver?
The scripture-seeking team lives inside the system. Tang Seng is Buddhism's appointed pilgrim. Wukong is the monkey pressed by Rulai. Bajie and Sha Seng are Heaven's exiled officers. All inside the system.
How could people from inside the system handle the system's own remainder?
Use ability? Wukong cannot win. Call reinforcements? Guanyin says she cannot manage. Find Rulai? Rulai himself was stung.
Every resource inside the system isn't enough. This is not a problem solved by "finding someone stronger." This problem exceeds what the system can handle.
A Path No One Takes Credit For
So what do they do?
Guanyin says: I cannot manage this. But I know who might know something. Go find the Old Mother of Mount Lishan.
Who is she? She appeared when we discussed the Four Saints Testing the Heart in Article Thirteen. Four bodhisattvas became a family to test Bajie. Who played the mother? The Old Mother of Mount Lishan. Guanyin was a daughter, Manjushri a daughter, Samantabhadra a daughter. The Old Mother was the mother.
How high her rank? Guanyin is her junior. Perhaps even Rulai would call her senior.
Does she take the case?
She does not.
She says: Go find the Bodhisattva Vīrūḍhaka. But don't say I told you.
Don't say I told you. These six words are delicious. A figure of such seniority that everyone respects her—she points a path but leaves no name. No trace. I'm not involved. Go yourself.
Does Vīrūḍhaka take the case?
She does not. She laughed. She said: Someone sent you here, didn't they? I know. Go find my son.
She doesn't act directly either. She too knows who sent you. Everyone understands, says nothing, yet each passes the ball to the next.
To whom does it finally fall?
The Pleiad Star.
The Remainder of the Remainder
Who is the Pleiad Star?
A rooster.
The Pleiad Star's true form is a rooster. Roosters counter scorpions. Naturally. No magic, no power, no cultivation. Just counter. Put a rooster before the scorpion—the scorpion is done.
A super-remainder—the Scorpion Demon, who even stung the Buddha—solved by a rooster.
The structure of this solution is critical.
Not greater force defeating the demon. Not the system mustering more resources. Outside the system, there exists something that is naturally this super-remainder's remainder.
The remainder of the remainder.
The Scorpion Demon is Heaven and Buddha-realm's remainder. The Pleiad Star is the Scorpion Demon's remainder. Everyone has a remainder. Everyone has someone who can manage it. Even a super-remainder has its own super-remainder.
This structure is infinite. No existence has no remainder. Rulai has one. The Scorpion Demon has one. The Pleiad Star has one too.
So let no one be smug.
What Does the Pleiad Star Do Day-to-Day?
Here's an interesting detail.
The Pleiad Star doesn't usually intervene. He simply stays above. One of the Twenty-Eight Mansions. Not involved in the journey's daily affairs. Doesn't fight demons. Doesn't orchestrate. Doesn't worry.
But he manages one thing. He manages that super-remainder.
Because that's why he exists. Roosters counter scorpions. Not that he trained some anti-scorpion ability. His very existence is the scorpion's counter. He needs do nothing. His presence is enough.
This is why the path is so winding—Guanyin to the Old Mother to Vīrūḍhaka to the Pleiad Star. Because you don't know who is the counter to your counter. You search inside the system, you won't find it. You must follow an unacknowledged chain of connections, passed hand to hand, to some corner you've never heard of, until you find the thing that naturally counters your super-remainder.
It's not about ability. It's not about resources. It's providence. You reach this point, by chance (or not by chance), someone points you toward a path. Everyone on that path pretends they weren't involved. Finally you find the rooster.
Don't Say I Told You
This difficulty mirrors the Pingdingshan article, but goes deeper.
Pingdingshan's structure: I, Wukong, can handle it. Most trials are this level. Power suffices.
The Pipa Cave goes down two more levels.
First level: I cannot handle this. Cannot win. The scorpion's stinger is too much—approach is impossible.
Second level: I cannot handle this, but I know who can. Call reinforcements. The journey usually works this way. Find Guanyin, find Heaven, someone will catch you. But this time Guanyin says: I cannot manage.
Third level: I don't know who can handle this. No one knows.
At the third level, there is no answer. No one knows how to address this super-remainder.
But someone will help.
Guanyin doesn't know who can manage it, but she thinks the Old Mother might know something. The Old Mother doesn't know if her suggestion will work, but she thinks Vīrūḍhaka might. Vīrūḍhaka isn't certain, but she tells Wukong to try her son.
Whether it will help, honestly, no one knows. So no one claims credit.
"Don't say I told you" isn't modesty. It's genuine uncertainty about whether you can help. If it works, that's not my achievement. If it doesn't, that's not my failure. Casual assistance. Works out, we continue. Doesn't work, I've lost nothing.
Pingdingshan is see through don't speak through—certainty under silence. You know the answer but don't say. The Pipa Cave is help but don't claim help—uncertainty under kindness. You don't know the answer but still reach out.
The first requires restraint. The second requires courage.
Look back at that chain.
Guanyin: I cannot manage. Go find the Old Mother. Old Mother: Go find Vīrūḍhaka. Don't say I sent you. Vīrūḍhaka: Someone sent you, right? I know. Go find my son. Pleiad Star: You came, you came.
Each is uncertain. Each helps one step. Each takes no credit. Finally the rooster too doesn't think he solved anything—he just stands before the scorpion and it's over. He didn't "solve" it. He was simply there.
No hero here. No one says "I solved this super-remainder." Because no one did. It was dissolved by a chain of connections. Each person in the chain did a little. Each didn't know if their part was enough. Each did it anyway.
There's More
Wukong thought the Pipa Cave was a one-off luck. By chance he found the rooster.
It wasn't.
Later, Wukong cannot defeat the Hundred-Eyed Demon (the Yellow Flower Temple incident) and must again find Vīrūḍhaka.
Same path. Same chain. What seemed luck was structure. Your remainder is fixed. Your remainder's remainder is fixed too. When you meet something you cannot handle, you must return to that chain. Not different people each time. Same direction, same path, same "I cannot handle this but I know who might."
This too is scripture-seeking. Not all scripture sits at the Buddha-realm. Some scripture lies on the road to finding Vīrūḍhaka.
