Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.
The Heaven and Earth Society and Prince Mu's household want the same thing: overthrow the Qing and restore the Ming. When they meet in Yangzhou, they fight. The dispute concerns which extinct branch of the imperial Zhu family possessed the better claim. The restoration does not yet exist, but its supporters are already deciding whose restoration it will be.
The quarrel is comic because every argument is sincere. Genealogy, succession, sacrifice, and recognition all matter if victory will one day determine whose service counted. A cause that has not become a political reality remains a name; because the name itself cannot be divided, its adherents divide the positions beneath it. The Zheng court in Taiwan follows the same pattern. Its factions struggle over inheritance while Chen Jinnan holds the external network together, only to die at the hands of the family he serves.
The learned loyalists Gu Yanwu, Huang Zongxi, and Zha Jizuo eventually propose Wei Xiaobao as emperor. Their reasoning is orderly: he is Han Chinese, commands resources at court, has standing in the secret society, and no plausible Zhu heir remains. Each step follows from the premises. The conclusion is an illiterate, greedy, sexually predatory former brothel child who has spent years serving Kangxi. The absurdity lies not in a broken deduction but in what a consistent program has left available to deduce.
Both sides love Wei in ways that are genuine. His society brothers trust him with their lives, then require him to assassinate Kangxi. Kangxi protects and enriches him, then requires him to betray the society. Neither asks whether he wants the attached duty, because within each system desire is irrelevant. A loyal subject ought to obey; a loyal brother ought to kill.
By the novel's end, restoration has become sustained not by its prospects but by the dead already invested in it. To stop would seem to abandon them. Wei does the one thing neither structure can translate: he refuses the throne, refuses the purge, and vanishes. The crown imagined for him remains waiting in a world that has never existed.
