Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.
When Master Hong rewards three members of the Mystic Dragon Cult, he does it in public. He removes three red pills from a black porcelain bottle, praises their courage, and orders them swallowed. The Leopard Embryo Muscle-Easing Pill initially fills the body with warmth and extraordinary comfort. If the recipient does not receive an antidote within a year, however, its action reverses and grotesquely deforms the body.
It is therefore both a prize and a subscription. The disciple kneels in gratitude, enjoys the benefit, and leaves knowing exactly when he must return. The cult's other practices complete the design: extravagant chants promise the leader immortal fortune; younger followers are promoted over veterans; informers multiply; accomplished martial artists learn to measure every sentence. Dependency appears not as punishment but as favor renewed.
The system survives for years and collapses in an afternoon. Hong discovers that his wife has betrayed him and orders every disciple to kill her. They hesitate. The leader who made himself the source of rank, safety, medicine, and meaning has eliminated every relation not mediated by his position. Once his command ceases to organize the room, he has no friend to appeal to and no shared purpose left. He has only the chair.
The novel offers a quiet counterimage in Chengguan, the old Shaolin monk. He once held the monastery's highest office and later returned to sweeping floors. When Wei Xiaobao asks his rank, he can barely remember it. His authority has become something he possessed and released, not something that must be fed by the dependence of others.
The pill is memorable because it compresses an entire politics into one object. Control need not begin with pain. It may arrive as recognition, health, promotion, protection, or belonging. The decisive question is whether the gift enlarges the receiver's life or makes future life conditional on returning to the giver. A reward that cannot be safely outgrown is already a leash.
