Little Xuanzi

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.

Wei Xiaobao and the Kangxi Emperor first meet as two boys wrestling in an empty room. Each is dressed as a palace eunuch; neither reveals his name. “Little Guizi” and “Little Xuanzi” fight, laugh, and agree to meet again. Nothing between them has yet been purchased by office, wealth, obedience, or fear.

Their capture of Oboi preserves that original shape for a moment. To Kangxi it is the first decisive act of personal rule. To Wei it is helping a friend win a fight. Once Wei learns that Little Xuanzi is the emperor, however, affection acquires a political grammar. Kangxi rewards him lavishly and protects him again and again, but an imperial gift can never be only a gift. It creates a servant who owes performance in return.

Kangxi is no caricatured tyrant. He is intelligent, disciplined, and serious about governing well. He suppresses the Three Feudatories, incorporates Taiwan, confronts Russia, and wants ordinary people to live in peace. He has a law of his own. Yet the throne turns everyone he encounters into a use before allowing them to be anything else: ministers administer, soldiers fight, consorts produce heirs, relatives must be watched. Even intimacy becomes a security question.

Wei remains the one person who speaks to him in a voice formed before court etiquette. That is why Kangxi treasures him—and why he cannot leave him free. He eventually demands that Wei surrender the Heaven and Earth Society. When Wei refuses, the emperor issues a decree falsely crediting him with Chen Jinnan's death. Once the society believes it, Wei will have nowhere to go except the court.

The move is cold precisely because it is driven by affection. Kangxi does not want his friend dead; he wants the friend to be a subject first. Wei escapes instead. The emperor who achieves nearly every public purpose of his reign repeatedly sends men to find him and fails. The empty wrestling room remains at the beginning of the book, holding a relation the two men can remember but never recover.
