Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.
“If you have never met Chen Jinnan, it is useless to call yourself a hero.” The saying travels through the jianghu long before Chen himself appears. He never uses it. He does not need to. As chief strategist of the Zheng regime in Taiwan and Chief Helmsman of the Heaven and Earth Society, he commands loyalty because he is capable, generous, and willing to bear danger before asking it of anyone else.
Yet the great task of his life is not one he chose. “Overthrow the Qing and restore the Ming” arrives already written by the generation of Zheng Chenggong. Chen inherits it whole, with no authority to revise its destination. He can see that popular feeling has changed, that loyalist factions spend their strength disputing legitimacy, and that the Qing emperor is becoming a formidable ruler. Seeing does not free him. He continues because continuation has become the meaning of fidelity.
The Zheng family for whom he labors gives him no corresponding place. Zheng Keshuang is weak and suspicious; Feng Xifan treats Chen's reputation as an obstacle. The better Chen performs, the more threatening he appears beside an inadequate heir. His followers, experience, and public honor—all earned in service—become evidence against him.
On Tongchi Island, after Chen defeats a Qing naval force, Zheng Keshuang strikes him from behind. Chen's last instruction to Wei Xiaobao is not to harm his killer. The young man is, after all, the grandson of the prince Chen has served. His final act is therefore to protect the surname that has just killed him.
The novel offers a brutal companion case in Wu Liuqi, a Heaven and Earth Society agent who spends years disguised as a Qing officer. He is killed as a traitor by loyalists who do not know his secret. Both men serve a cause that consumes even their right to explain their deaths. Their tragedy is not that they fail the mission. It is that the mission succeeds in defining them so completely that nothing of them remains outside it.
