Abbess Miejue offers Ji Xiaofu a complete pardon. Her disciple's relationship with Yang Xiao, a leader of the Ming Cult, can be erased if Ji performs one task: kill him. The offer appears merciful because the past will be forgiven. Its price is the future. Ji may return only by becoming the instrument of her teacher's hatred.
She refuses and dies by Miejue's hand. The crucial point is not simply that Miejue is severe. Within her world, defeating an enemy is insufficient. The enemy must first acknowledge that the Emei account is correct. Forgiveness becomes the reward for consenting to the judge's definition of oneself.
Miejue later transmits the same structure to Zhou Zhiruo. On a burning tower she dictates a mission: secure the Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber, recover the manuals hidden inside, restore Emei, and never marry Zhang Wuji. The vow comes with its own supernatural penalties and the authority of a dying master. Zhou is twenty years old, kneeling above a fire, and says yes.
This is less a final wish than a contract whose sanctions are announced before signature. Zhou goes on to betray, poison, steal, and manipulate. She is responsible for those acts; the novel does not remove her agency. But their sequence is also the successful execution of a dead woman's instructions. Miejue's law survives by occupying the choices of someone who outlives her.
At Wan'an Temple, Miejue's last physical act is to reject rescue from a member of the Ming Cult. She chooses death rather than let the boundary she has maintained become porous at the final moment. There is integrity in that refusal, but it is an integrity purchased by everyone required to live inside it.
The novel asks us to distinguish steadfastness from ownership. A person may refuse to surrender her own law. The danger begins when fidelity requires another person to prove it by erasing her own future. Miejue never doubts the difference, because in her world no difference exists.

她恨明教。这份恨在书里有很清楚的来路：她的师兄孤鸿子跟她有婚约，跟明教的杨逍比武输了，气死了；她的亲哥哥方评被谢逊杀了，屠龙刀也被谢逊抢了走。两件都是私事，都是真的。
后来这两件私事长成了别的东西。在她那里，明教不再是一群做过坏事的人，而是一样必须被清除的东西，比蒙古人更该杀。这个判断她说得很明白，也照着做了一辈子。
纪晓芙是她最喜欢的弟子。
纪晓芙出任务的时候被杨逍掳去，失了身，后来逃了回来，生下一个女儿，取名不悔。她瞒着师门，把孩子养在外面。
灭绝查出来之后，把这些事情一件件数给她听：失身、回护、瞒骗、私养孩儿——她说这些她都可以不计较。
她只要一件事：纪晓芙去把杨逍杀了。
纪晓芙不肯。
灭绝一掌把她打死了。
她给出的条件是完整的：过去的一切一笔勾销，条件是照我说的做一件事。纪晓芙不接这个条件，就没有别的路。
这件事后来在光明顶上被杨不悔当着天下人说破。灭绝当众承认了，接着把杨逍一家说得极不堪。她没有一刻觉得自己错了，因为在她那套算法里，一个弟子跟明教的人生了孩子还不肯动手，就是叛教。
光明顶那一战她最卖力。她一把倚天剑杀了明教锐金旗的旗主，锐金旗的教众落在峨眉手里不肯求饶，她和大弟子把这些人的右臂一条条斩了下来。投降的也要折辱一番。
在她那里，敌人不是打赢就算了，敌人得先承认自己是错的。
再往后是万安寺。
六大派的高手被赵敏关在塔上，元兵放火烧塔。张无忌上去救人，用乾坤大挪移把人一个个接下来。
灭绝不肯受明教的恩。
她在塔顶上做了三件事：把峨眉掌门之位传给周芷若；把倚天剑和屠龙刀里的秘密告诉她；逼她发一个毒誓。
那个誓的内容是：去接近张无忌，取得他的信任，然后杀了他，把刀剑夺回来，绝不能嫁给他。若是违誓，她的父母、她自己，都要不得好死。
这不是一份遗嘱，这是一份连罚则一起写好的合同。周芷若那年二十岁，跪在一座着火的塔顶上，答应了。
然后灭绝抱着她跳了下去。落地之前她用尽最后的力气把周芷若安稳送到地面；张无忌想用乾坤大挪移接她一把，她反手一掌把这份帮忙挡了回去，自己摔死在塔下。
她这一生的最后一个动作，是拒绝一个明教的人救她的命。
周芷若从那一天起，活在那个誓里。
要留意那个誓的做法：它不是要她去做一件事，是要她把自己整个改造成一件工具——先假装喜欢一个人，再骗取那个人的信任，再动手。她要做的每一步都要求她不是她自己。
书里写她本来是什么样子。她是船家的女儿，父亲被蒙古兵杀了；十岁上下被张三丰救下、送进峨眉。张无忌小时候在船上不肯吃东西，是她一口一口喂的。这些事情她记得，张无忌也记得。
她做的那些事，是照着誓走的。
灵蛇岛外那座荒岛上，她把所有人迷倒，偷走倚天剑和屠龙刀，把两样东西对砍开来，取出里面的经书；她伤了殷离，把昏迷的赵敏扔上一条船，让所有人都以为那些事是赵敏做的。然后她照着经书练成了九阴白骨爪，成了一流高手。
她是照着一个死人的吩咐做的，每一件都做成了。
这件事有一处很容易看漏。她瞒过了所有人，唯独没有瞒过谢逊——谢逊眼睛瞎了，耳朵极灵，那天在岛上把她做的每一件事都听在耳里。他后来说破了。
再往后，她坐上了那个掌门之位，也拿到了那两部经书，还差一点和张无忌拜堂成亲。婚礼上赵敏闯了进来，张无忌跟着走了。
她剩下的东西是：一个门派、一身武功、一个已经不可能完成的誓。她没有一样东西是自己挑的——那个门派是塔顶上塞给她的，那身武功是照着誓练的，那个誓是别人替她起的。
书快结束的时候，她跟张无忌要过一件事。她说，等你们成亲那一天，我要你答应我做一件事。
她没有说是什么事。
