When the six orthodox schools attack Brightness Peak, Zhang Wuji has every reason to let the Ming Cult fall. Its conflicts have already helped destroy his family; its leaders are strangers, rivals, and in some cases enemies. Yet he steps between the factions and receives blow after blow. The novel does not pause to make him balance the account. He sees people about to die.
This is the recurring shape of his life. He becomes leader of the Ming Cult not because he seeks command, but because the people before him will otherwise break apart. He accepts duties to relieve immediate suffering, then finds that the office has attached a history, a constituency, and political expectations to his compassion.
Zhang is the novel's most powerful martial artist and the rare major figure whom no single school can fully claim. Wudang gave him family, but not his decisive skills; the Nine Yang Manual and the Heaven and Earth Great Shift arrive outside ordinary lineage. That freedom from sect inheritance allows him to save enemies as readily as friends. He cannot watch a person die without reaching out, and he makes no exception for the morally undeserving.
The quality is beautiful, but it is not a governing program. A leader must decide among distant consequences, conflicting institutions, and people not present in the room. Zhang's compass points most clearly toward the life immediately visible. Others therefore place crises before him, confident that his refusal to abandon anyone will move him where they want.
Xiao Zhao supplies the quietest counterpoint. Forced to leave with the Persian Ming Cult, she exchanges the rest of her life for the lives of the people aboard a ship. The decision is constrained, yet it is also the one moment in which she directs her own path rather than serving missions assigned by her mother or the cult. The book never calls her a traitor. It lets her go.
Zhang saves many lives because he cannot do otherwise. The question left open is whether a person so responsive to every immediate claim can keep an institution from writing its purpose across him.

阳顶天走火入魔死在密道里，尸首多年没人找到。教主一空，底下就散了：殷天正带着一批人另立天鹰教，范遥不知去向，杨逍和五散人各管一摊，谁也不服谁。到六大派打上光明顶那一天，明教自己内部正在拼命。
张无忌是那天到的。
他去光明顶不是为了明教，是为了一件私事。他上去之后看见的是：六大派把明教的人围在山上，一个一个杀；山上的人内讧到打不动了。他谁的人都不是——武当的弟子、天鹰教的外孙、明教法王的义子，这三条身份在那一天全部作数，也全部不作数。
他做的事是拦。
他先替明教的人挡住六大派，又替六大派的人挡住明教。他挡的这些人里，有当年逼死他父母的那几派掌门，有一掌打死纪晓芙的灭绝师太，有把张三丰赶下山的少林和尚。
他没有算过这笔账。书里没有让他在那一天想起武当山上的事，他只是看见有人要死在眼前。
他就是这样被推上教主之位的。
这个位子他不想要，推过很多次，最后是杨逍那些人跪下来求他。他后来管着几十万人，颁教规，聚各路豪杰，把明教从一盘散沙拢成了抗元的主力。这些事情他都办成了。
他这一生得到的每一个位置，都是别人塞给他的；他答应下来的理由，从来不是他想要，是他不忍心看着眼前的人为难。
这是他的脾气。书里写得很实在，也没有替他遮掩这脾气带来的麻烦。
他这身武功的来路也是这个样子。九阳神功是在一个山谷底下跟着一只白猿捡到的；乾坤大挪移是在光明顶的密道里为了救人临时练的；圣火令上的武功是在海上学的。没有一样是他求来的，也没有一样是拜过师父的。
他是这本书里武功最高的人，也是唯一一个没有门派要他效忠的人。
他救过朱九真，那家人回头就害他；他放过很多本该杀的人，那些人一次次回来找他麻烦；成昆几次到他手上又几次跑掉。他做每一个决定都拖，都两边为难，都想着能不能都不死。江湖上说他优柔寡断，这不是冤枉他。
他的不能不只有一条：他没有办法看着一个人死在自己面前而不伸手。这一条他从没有破过例，连对着仇人也没有。
他身边那几个人，各有各的位置。
小昭是明教在波斯的那一支派来的，也是紫衫龙王的女儿。她扮成一个瘸腿丑丫头在他身边伺候，扮得很像。后来波斯来的人认出了她，要她回去做圣女——圣女是要接教主之位的，规矩是终身不得嫁人。她本来可以不认。她认了，因为那是当场救下张无忌和一船人的唯一办法。
她走的时候在船上哭。她答应过要一辈子服侍他。
她这一生唯一一次自己做主，是拿这一生去换那一船人的命。
赵敏这一边是反的。她是汝阳王的女儿，蒙古的郡主，手上有兵有权，六大派的高手是她抓的，十香软筋散是她下的。她做那些事的时候，一样是照着一套自己没有选过的东西做的——她生在那一家，那一家在打这场仗。
后来她跟着张无忌走了。她拿走的不是明教的位置，是她自己那一份：父亲、哥哥、郡主的身份、蒙古这一边的将来，全部不要了。
书里没有让她说过一句她背叛了谁。她只是走了。
殷离是另一种。她一心记着的是当年海边那个咬了她一口的少年，不是后来长大的张无忌；她后来醒了，也没有留下。
周芷若那一边，前面已经说过。她做的每一件事都是照着塔顶上那个誓走的。
这四个人里，只有赵敏那一份是自己撕掉的。
这四个人在这本书里的处境是同一个：她们各自被安排了一份差事——波斯的圣女、蒙古的郡主、峨眉的掌门、天鹰教的孙女。差事在前，人在后。
至于那个坐在最高处的人，他从头到尾没有为自己要过一样东西。
他把明教从光明顶一路带到了快要打下江山的地步。
