On Zhang Sanfeng's hundredth birthday, the martial world climbs Wudang Mountain asking one question: where is Xie Xun? The visitors are not inventing their losses. Xie has killed relatives, masters, and friends. The survivors have a right to demand an account, and Zhang Cuishan and Yin Susu possess information that might lead to him.
But Xie is also their sworn brother. He has trusted them, protected them, and become the godfather of their son. To disclose his location is betrayal. To remain silent appears to protect a murderer from those he harmed. The couple does not face a simple choice between right and wrong. They stand where two legitimate claims have been made mutually fatal.
The assembly's pressure is not reducible to villainy. Each school can explain why it came. Each explanation makes sense from inside the bereaved family or lineage. Yet when those explanations converge, they produce a demand with no survivable answer. Zhang Cuishan and Yin Susu die not because a tribunal proves them guilty, but because speech and silence have both been made impossible.
Zhang Sanfeng possesses immense prestige and power, but he does not use them to turn affection into command. He has never asked his disciples to repay his teaching by becoming copies of him. That restraint is what makes the day's failure so painful: even a teacher who refuses ownership cannot make the rival accounts disappear.
After the parents' deaths, young Zhang Wuji is poisoned and excluded from nearly every institution that might save him. Each refusal has a rule behind it: sect boundaries, medical conditions, old enmities, or the preservation of secret knowledge. No single rule is absurd. The child in front of them does not appear in the calculation.
Wudang Mountain therefore holds a difficult truth. Justice requires that victims be heard and wrongs answered. But when an answer is demanded without room for the speaker's other bonds, justice can reproduce the very reduction it opposes. A valid claim does not become complete merely because it is valid.

张翠山和殷素素在冰火岛上住了十年。
他们是被一场变故卷到那里去的：一个是武当七侠里的老五，一个是天鹰教教主的女儿，两边在中原是要动手的。船漂到极北的荒岛，同行的还有谢逊。三个人在岛上没有别的事可做，慢慢就成了一家人，还结拜了。张无忌就是在那座岛上生的。
十年之后他们回来了。
回来之后的每一件事，都跟这十年无关。
第一件是俞岱岩。武当七侠里的老三，早年被人打断了全身骨头，从此瘫在床上。当年动手的是龙门镖局，而指使龙门镖局的人是殷素素——她那时还不认识张翠山，做那件事是为了别的目的。她后来把整个龙门镖局杀了灭口。
这两笔账都在她身上。张翠山不知道，武当山也不知道。
第二件是屠龙刀。谢逊抢了那把刀，抢刀那天在王盘山震坏了一岛的人。这十年里，中原的门派为了找他，跟天鹰教打了整整十年。
张翠山夫妇活着回来，就等于告诉天下人：知道谢逊在哪里的，只有他们两个。
这十年里，中原并不知道他们还活着。天鹰教为着屠龙刀跟各派结下的仇，一笔一笔都是新的；而那把刀的下落，只有那个失踪了十年的人知道。
张三丰九十岁大寿那天，各派的人上了武当山。
他们要的是一句话——谢逊在哪里。
这一天在书里写得很细。少林、峨眉、崆峒、昆仑、华山各派都到齐了，说的都是道理：谢逊杀了我们的人，你们知情不报，就是同党；你们是名门正派的弟子，怎么能包庇一个魔头。俞岱岩的伤摆在那里，龙门镖局满门的血摆在那里。
这些话没有一句是编的。他们不是来讹诈的，他们要的是一个交代，而这个交代他们有资格要。
张翠山说不出来。他答应过谢逊，那是他的结义兄长，也是他儿子的义父。
殷素素也说不出来，因为她还有另一件事说不出来——俞岱岩是她害的。
张翠山把这两件事在同一天知道齐了。他没有辩，也没有跟谁动手。他在自己的师父和师兄弟面前拔剑自刎。殷素素跟着他去了。
他们死，不是因为做错了什么被判了刑，是因为那句话说也不是，不说也不是。
殷素素临死之前，把十岁的儿子叫过来，附在耳边说了一句话。她说的是：越是漂亮的女人，越会骗人。
这是她留给孩子的全部遗产。她这一生骗过很多人，害过很多人，最后一句话是把这套本事的用法交给儿子——不是教他怎么骗人，是教他别人会怎么骗他。
张三丰的反应，是这本书里少有的一处。
他没有责怪儿媳出身魔教。张翠山从冰火岛回来的时候，他说过一句意思很清楚的话：正邪之分不在门派，看的是这个人做什么。他知道殷素素是天鹰教的，也知道那意味着什么，他还是收下了这个媳妇和这个孙子。
徒弟死在自己面前，他没有跟在场的任何一派翻脸。他把那个中了玄冥神掌的孩子抱走了。
他手里有全天下最大的一份声望，他一次也没有拿它去要求过谁。
那孩子身上的寒毒治不好。张三丰带着他去了少林寺——少林的九阳功能压住这个毒。他去求。
九十多岁的武当祖师，亲自上少林，低头求人。
少林寺拒绝了。理由是九阳功不外传，而且当年张三丰的师承跟少林有一段旧账。他们把他折辱了一番，让他下了山。
这两件事挨在一起，形状就很清楚了。武当山上那些人要一句话，要得理直气壮；少林寺拒绝一个老人，也拒绝得合乎门规。
每一处都有一套道理，每一套道理都说得通；被这些道理压死的那两个人，和被拒之门外的那个孩子，不在任何一套道理的计算里。
后来蝴蝶谷有个医术通神的胡青牛，人称蝶谷医仙。他有一条自己定的规矩：不是明教的人，见死不救。这条规矩他守得很严，江湖上因此叫他见死不救。
张无忌是被抬到他面前的。他是武当张五侠的儿子，是天鹰教殷教主的外孙，是明教金毛狮王的义子。
这三个身份，那一天在那间屋子里，是要拿出来一条一条算的。
