Nineteen years before the novel opens, more than thirty masked people surround Bai Tianyu’s household outside Plum Blossom Nunnery. Each carries a separate grievance—love, humiliation, status, business. Many locally sufficient reasons combine into one massacre.

The leader, Ma Kongqun, survives. He builds the prosperous Hall of Ten Thousand Horses, becomes a husband and father, and acquires the respect of the border town. Other survivors establish similarly public lives.

Time does not acquit them. It does make them more than the fixed names on a revenge list.

The man in black enters town

Fu Hongxue arrives with a limp, black clothes, and a black saber. Identifying the old conspirators means cutting through the present selves under which their earlier faces have been living.

That is the difficulty the phrase “a blood debt repaid in blood” conceals. A name on a list remains static; a living person becomes an employer, spouse, parent, and neighbor. The old crime remains real, but any new violence must pass through the relations that grew afterward.

The women stationed inside other people’s accounts

Shen Sanniang enters Ma’s household as Hua Baifeng’s agent and waits years for the order to kill him. During the wait, she loves him. When the moment comes, she can neither carry out the mission nor simply return and cancel nineteen years. She kills herself, refusing both available endings.

Cui Nong has even less knowledge of the account in which she lives. She is Ma’s daughter, born after he raped a ginseng gatherer’s wife. She travels with Fu and dies during an attack whose target is not cleanly separable: she appears to shield Fu, yet the violence also comes for her.

Hua lives for a dead man, Shen inhabits a marriage for an order, and Cui dies inside a history no one told her. None begins in the position she is made to occupy.

The final stroke interrupted

Later retellings sometimes let Fu complete the revenge before discovering it was never his. Gu Long’s ending is sharper.

Ding Baiyun delivers Ma Kongqun to him, apparently reduced by drugs to a confused and helpless man. Fu still prepares to kill. At the instant the saber descends, Ye Kai’s flying dagger strikes and breaks the Bai family blade.

Then Ye tells the truth. He is the biological son of Bai Tianyu and Hua Baifeng. Fu is not a Bai descendant. The parents Ma murdered were not Fu’s parents; Fu hates him because other people planted that hatred and raised him around it.

The revenge does not become meaningless after completion. It loses its assigned owner at the moment it would be completed.

The heir who refuses the inheritance

Ye Kai possesses the blood relation Fu lacks. He also possesses an education from Li Xunhuan that gives him another way to hold it. He refuses to continue a sequence that has already injured the children of nearly every family it touched.

Fu turns away, saying he will hate no one again. Ma is left alive, and the novel does not close every uncertainty about his condition or future.

The flying dagger has not answered violence with a better killing. It has opened a small interval between a lifetime of preparation and the act that preparation was supposed to make inevitable.
