Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.
The truth begins with an exchange of infants.
When Hua Baifeng becomes pregnant by Bai Tianyu, his wife learns of the affair. Lady Bai does not want Bai blood to remain in Hua’s hands, because the child would preserve a bond between the lovers. She bribes the midwife to replace Hua’s newborn with another baby.
The novel never identifies that second child’s biological parents. Fu Hongxue is the anonymous child placed in the cradle; Hua’s actual son is sent to the Ye family, becomes Ye Kai, and later learns the flying dagger from Li Xunhuan.
Hua does not know about the exchange. She believes Fu is her son and raises him around the statement that he must avenge his father.
The falsehood does not come from the person who speaks it. That makes it more difficult to resist. Fu’s name, practice, solitude, and sense of kinship grow from a mistake everyone nearest to him treats as sacred truth.
When the truth arrives, he is not merely told that he misidentified a parent. He must ask which parts of nineteen years still belong to the person who lived them.
Ye does not wait until Fu has completed the revenge. He breaks the saber as Fu prepares to kill Ma Kongqun and then discloses the exchange.
The sequence preserves one thing. Fu cannot recover his childhood or Cui Nong, but the final act has not yet occurred. He can still decide what happens after hearing who he is not.
At first he reels and denies it. Then he turns away. He tells Ye that Ye is not to blame, and that he himself will no longer hate anyone.
The revelation removes the ownership assigned to his revenge, but leaves him ownership of its unfinished stroke.
Ye is the true son and consciously declines the blood debt. His refusal is not evidence of a naturally superior temperament. He was raised in the Ye household and taught by Li Xunhuan. His education gave him a place from which to examine revenge before entering it.
Fu was raised inside the obligation. For him, identity and vengeance were delivered as one sentence. Before asking why he did not choose earlier, we have to notice how little earlier self was left outside the choice.
The novel does not reward Fu with a better ancestry. He leaves without the names of his biological parents. The story that made his suffering feel solemn has disappeared.
But losing the Bai name does not erase the hand deformed by holding the saber, the disabled leg, the seizures survived, or the life that performed every day of the training. Those cannot be transferred to Ye with the bloodline.
Ye inherits the true name and refuses to let it dictate his next act. Fu loses the borrowed name and, for the first time, can take a next step it did not dictate.
There is no replacement mission waiting outside the door. That absence is not the end of a person. It is the beginning of a road that may finally belong to him.
