From the time Fu Hongxue can walk, he repeats one sequence: draw the saber, cut, return it to the sheath. Tens of thousands of times a day, every day, year after year.
The resulting stroke is nearly invisible. Its speed does not come from a dazzling variety of forms but from one action pressed so deeply into the body that thought is no longer required.
Hua Baifeng, a former princess of the Demon Cult, tells him he is the son of Bai Tianyu. Nineteen years earlier, masked assailants slaughtered the celebrated swordsman and his household outside Plum Blossom Nunnery. Fu’s very name—red snow—commemorates blood staining the ground.
His education is perfectly fitted to finding the surviving conspirators. He learns the Bai family saber, poisons and antidotes, exceptional recall, and how to see at night. Nothing is ornamental. Every competence points toward people he must kill.
The omissions are equally systematic. Fu does not learn conversation, play, friendship, or trust. Practice replaces childhood; failure to meet the daily count costs food and sleep. Hua never smiles at him. Her grief becomes a curriculum.
Fu is born with a disabled leg and epilepsy. The seizures come when the strain inside him exceeds what he can hold. Unlike the elegant impairments attached to many wandering heroes, these conditions directly obstruct the function for which he has been trained.
Gu Long repeatedly shows him collapsed in the road, convulsing while his hand continues to grip the black saber. Strangers point and laugh. When the seizure passes, he gets up and walks on.
The moment matters because the body never becomes a transparent instrument. Hua can make the stroke automatic, fill memory with a massacre, and bind duty with curses in which she stakes her own life. She cannot make the person disappear into the purpose.
Cui Nong travels with him, washes his clothes, and stays through his seizures. Fu often seems not to respond. His coldness is not simply lack of feeling. He has no ordinary language for being cared for because every gift in his childhood had a use.
When Cui Nong dies before him, even the meaning of sacrifice refuses to be simple: she appears to shield him from an attack, but the assailant was also targeting her. In this world, one person’s death rarely belongs to a single story.
Fu’s saber has been practiced for killing rather than living. If the mission ends, the training supplies no next day. Yet the novel makes the deeper problem arrive first. Before Fu can complete the act for which his whole life was shaped, he learns that its founding sentence—“You are Bai Tianyu’s son”—is false.
The blade has not failed. The name of the hand holding it has.

傅红雪从会走路起，每天做同一件事。
拔刀，劈砍，收刀。
再拔刀，再劈砍，再收刀。
一天几万次。一年三百六十天。这样过了十几年。
他的刀法就是这么练出来的。到后来那一刀快得没有人看得清——不是招式精妙，是同一个动作做过了几百万遍，快到已经不需要想。
教他的人是花白凤，魔教的大公主。她告诉他，他是白天羽的儿子；白天羽一家十一口人十九年前在梅花庵外被人围杀，尸首倒在雪地里，血把雪染红了。
他的名字就是从那件事上取的。
梅花庵那件事的经过，她跟他讲过很多遍。
十九年前，神刀无敌白天羽带着一家十一口人经过梅花庵。三十多个蒙面人在庵外围住了他们，从天亮杀到天黑，十一口人一个不剩。动手的人当场死了大半，活下来的只有七个。
这七个人后来各自散在江湖上，改了名字，做了正经营生，有的成了一方富豪，有的成了德高望重的人物。
他要找的就是这七个人。
这十几年他学的东西，一样一样列出来是这样的。
刀法：他母亲把白家的神刀秘笈给了他，一招一式亲自督着他练。
毒：他会解奇毒，也精通毒杀和暗算——这些是魔教的东西。
记性：他过目不忘。
眼睛：他有夜眼，黑暗里看得见。
这些本事凑在一起，用处很清楚：一个人要在十九年后找到几个藏起来的仇人，把他们一个一个杀掉，需要的正是这些。
没有一样是没有用的。
他没有学过的东西也很清楚。
他没有学过跟人相处。他不会说笑话，不会寒暄，不知道别人为什么要笑。他不信任何人——这一条是他母亲反复交代的。
他没有过童年。书里写过他小时候的日子：练刀，练完继续练；练不到数目就不能吃饭，不能睡觉。
他母亲从来不对他笑。
书里写这个女人的时候，用的笔墨是冷的。她是魔教的大公主，年轻时爱过白天羽，后来那个人死了，她带着一个孩子躲进深山。她这一生剩下的全部内容，就是把这个孩子变成一把刀。
她做得很成功。
她给他的东西全部是有用的东西。
这个孩子身上还有两样东西是天生的。
一样是跛脚。他一条腿有毛病，走起路来姿势很怪，一瘸一拐。
另一样更麻烦：他有羊癫疯。发作起来倒在地上，浑身抽搐，口吐白沫，谁也拦不住。
书里写得很清楚：这个病是在他心里绷不住的时候发作的。
一个每天要拔刀几万次、被灌了十九年仇恨的孩子，心里绷不住的时候不会少。
古龙笔下的主角大多有个缺陷。李寻欢有痨病，楚留香鼻子不灵，花满楼眼盲。这些缺陷放在那些人身上，多少是一种风致。
傅红雪这两样不是。跛脚让他走不快，羊癫疯让他随时可能倒在地上——这两样都是直接妨碍他做那件事的。
他就带着这两样东西去做那件事。
有一段写他在路上发病。他倒在地上抽搐，手里还死死攥着那把刀，攥得指节发白。旁人围着看，指指点点，有人笑。
他醒过来，爬起来，接着走。
还有一件更冷的。
花白凤督促他的办法，除了教和罚，还有诅咒。她对着这个孩子发下过毒誓，说的是如果他报不了这个仇，他和她都要如何如何。
她把她自己也押了进去，押在这个孩子身上。
这十九年里，她没有跟他说过一句跟报仇无关的话。
他也从来没有问过一句。
他没有问过为什么是他，没有问过报完之后要做什么，也没有问过如果不报会怎么样。这三个问题在他那里不存在，因为在他能问出问题之前，答案已经先装进去了。
书里有一处写得极准。
傅红雪长大之后，遇上过一个女人，叫翠浓。她是在客栈里做那种生意的，遇上他之后跟着他走。
他不会跟人相处，这一点在她面前最明显。他不知道怎么说话，不知道怎么对一个人好，也不知道人可以对他好。翠浓对他的那些照顾，他很多时候是没有反应的——不是冷淡，是他不知道那是什么。
后来有人要杀他，翠浓替他挡了一剑，死了。
这件事后来查出来另一层：那个刺客本来就是冲着翠浓去的，指使的人要的是她的命。
他这一路上，连别人为他死这件事，都不完全是为他。
关于这个人，书里还有一句要留意。
他每天拔那么多次刀，练的从来不是怎么活下去，是怎么杀人。他这一身本事里没有一样是用来过日子的。
一个人如果被造出来只为了做完一件事，那么这件事做完之后，他就没有别的用处了。
而他自己，从头到尾没有被问过一次愿不愿意。
他被告知的第一件事就是他是谁的儿子。
那件事，是假的。
