A Death Before Every Opening

Not an ending, but a question

Ninety seconds alive

Before nearly every title sequence, Six Feet Under shows a person doing something ordinary: cooking, driving, arguing, swimming, applying sunscreen. Then the person dies, often absurdly, and the screen presents a name with two dates. The body arrives at Fisher & Sons.

The form forces “a dead body” back into contact with “a person.” Ordinarily we encounter death backward, beginning with the obituary and reconstructing a life already available for summary. Here we see an unfinished person before knowing that the moment is final. The death does not explain the life. It interrupts it.

The question upstairs

The Fisher family prepares these bodies while living above the funeral home. Every arrival asks them a question they answer slowly, badly, or too late: has this life become its own?

The first death belongs to Nathaniel Fisher. On Christmas Eve he drives the new hearse, lights a cigarette his wife dislikes, and is struck by a bus while speaking to her on the phone. He has spent a career handling other families’ endings and receives no ceremonial one of his own.

For five seasons he returns in the private imaginations of his wife and children. The dead man becomes less settled, not more, as incompatible memories reveal how little any family member possessed the whole person.

Before the dates

The opening deaths are unsettling because no moral pattern selects them. People are not punished or rewarded. They happen to stand where the event arrives.

No one can schedule that second or choose the activity beside which the dates will appear. The only arrangable material is the ordinary time before it. The form therefore turns from death toward today: if interruption came now, would the thing being done be an answer one was willing to leave? If not, waiting for a clearer deadline solves nothing. The deadline is the one fact the series refuses to disclose.

Six Feet Under, created by Alan Ball, aired from 2001 to 2005 across five seasons and sixty-three episodes. These essays read the television series itself.
