Aster's hands examine wounds, prepare medicine, tend plants, and follow the patterns in her mother's notebooks. The Lieutenant breaks and tortures those hands while demanding information.

The violence targets pain, profession, and identity at once. It tells the healer that every freedom attached to usefulness can be withdrawn.

A medical pass opens doors without ending the hierarchy

Aster can enter spaces most lower-deck residents cannot. She works with Theo, gains access to drugs, and is heard when the ship needs her skill. Each privilege depends on remaining useful to people who control the door.

Her attention does not follow the upper decks' social expectations. She classifies, studies detail, communicates directly, and often expresses care through precise action rather than familiar emotion. Those differences help her read bodies and Lune's notes; they do not make every judgment correct or turn her into an instrument.

Recognition would mean she keeps standing when she is not healing someone. Permission says she may move until the moment she asks why the same children keep arriving frozen.

The healer must be allowed to become a patient

After torture, Aster has reason to rest, grieve, refuse touch, and learn new ways of using injured hands. The approaching revolt does not erase those needs. A movement can praise her courage while treating recovery as delay in returning an essential worker to service.

Adaptation may open a future, but it should not become an inspirational duty. Tools, rehabilitation, and changed work need time and resources. Aster's food, safety, and voice cannot depend on proving that damage made her stronger.

She may still choose to decode Lune's message or help rescue Giselle. Choice matters most when companions would benefit from her saying yes.

Theo's protection is valuable because it is limited

Theo is an upper-deck doctor connected to the ruling family and also vulnerable through his parentage, body, and gender expression. He has access Aster lacks and risks the Lieutenant's violence. Privilege and danger coexist.

His information, medicine, and shelter can save Aster. They become another enclosure if he decides that knowing upper-deck threats entitles him to choose her route. Protection should transfer knowledge and options to the person bearing the risk.

Theo eventually poisons the Lieutenant, stopping a ruler who is still killing and torturing. The act may be necessary; it also concentrates judgment in a doctor with privileged access to a body. Liberation cannot turn medicine into the new side's secret execution service. Aster and Theo help one another most honestly when neither must pretend they cross the same doors at the same cost—and when care remains answerable to the person it is meant to protect.
