Aster knows her mother Lune mostly through notebooks, rumors, and the behavior of Baby, Matilda's artificial sun. The code eventually reveals that Lune altered the ship's course and turned it back toward Earth.

A dead woman has changed the future of everyone aboard. She has not returned to explain whether they should accept it.

An inheritance can open a road without becoming an order

Lune hid knowledge because the ruling decks would have stopped her. Secrecy preserved an action that official history tried to erase, and gave Aster evidence that Matilda's destination was never a sacred inevitability.

But redirecting the ship also affects generations who did not consent. Returning toward Earth may offer escape from a closed hierarchy and may lead toward a ruined planet nobody now knows. Lune's courage does not finish that collective decision.

Aster honors her mother best by making the discovery available for living people to judge, not by treating a ghost's plan as the final command. The dead may restore a question that power deleted; they cannot answer in place of those who inherit the consequences.

Giselle's death cannot be reduced to the key that frees Aster

Giselle is Aster's intimate companion, sharp, volatile, loving, and capable of harm. When the rescue plan fails after the execution method changes, the Lieutenant kills her. She is not simply the sacrifice that gives the protagonist sufficient resolve.

Her choices, pain, and difficult relation with Aster existed before the final violence. To remember only that the death helped trigger revolt would let the ship use her once more—as fuel for somebody else's historical movement.

Aster takes Giselle's body, along with Lune's remains, when she leaves. Carrying them preserves relation without claiming the dead approve every next step.

Escape and liberation end at different doors

The Lieutenant dies and resistance spreads aboard Matilda. Aster finds an escape craft and heads toward Earth with the two bodies. She has no obligation to remain until an entire ship is repaired.

Departure does not prove the people left behind are free. Heating, gates, archives, agriculture, and medical access can reproduce the old deck order after one ruler falls. A rebellion becomes liberation only as residents gain the power to rearrange those daily systems.

Nor is Earth guaranteed to be home. It is a direction Lune made available, not safety certified in advance. The ending keeps both journeys unfinished: one person claims the right not to be consumed by the ship's repair, while those aboard begin a struggle nobody outside can complete for them. Freedom appears not as one shared destination, but as the return of several futures where Matilda permitted only one.
