Aster treats Flick after the heat fails again on Matilda's lower decks. The child's frostbite is severe enough that medicine may save a life only by taking part of the injured body.

The chart can call this cold damage. Everyone on the deck knows the cold was distributed.

A spaceship can carry an old plantation into the future

Matilda left a dying Earth more than three centuries ago. Its engines, artificial sun, and sealed ecology belong to a technological future. Its decks reproduce a much older order: dark-skinned residents below grow food and maintain systems while upper decks hold warmth, education, movement, and religious authority.

Time has made the arrangement look structural. Children inherit the deck where they were born, and machinery repeats decisions whose authors are long dead. A door lock can enforce history without feeling hatred.

The ship has preserved humanity biologically while allowing one group's comfort to depend on another group's permanent exposure. Survival cannot be measured only by whether the vessel still moves.

Real scarcity does not explain why the same people are always cold

Heat and energy are finite. Emergencies may require painful rationing. That fact does not decide which decks go dark first, who sees the numbers, or whose comfort is defined as essential.

The Sovereign and Lieutenant combine allocation with curfew, search, and punishment. Basic conditions become rewards for obedience. A resident cannot meaningfully consent to the order when disagreement may remove the warmth needed to stay alive.

Fair rationing would publish limits, bring every deck into decisions, protect minimum heat and medicine from punishment, and give emergency powers an end. Physical constraint requires shared judgment; it does not grant upper decks a natural exemption.

Flick's wound is evidence, not only a case

Aster can clean damaged tissue, fight infection, and help the child survive. She cannot prescribe a medicine that changes the next heating decision. Her success risks returning Flick to the same world that caused the injury.

That does not make treatment futile. Saving one body prevents power from fully owning its consequences. But a clinic that records every frostbite as an isolated accident quietly helps the pattern remain invisible.

Aster's medical access lets her connect injuries across decks and outages. The records can become public knowledge without exposing patients. Matilda's lower residents are already farmers, mechanics, healers, parents, and keepers of routes the upper decks barely understand. The child on the table is not proof that they need a kinder master. The injury proves that the people who keep the ship alive must also help decide how life is kept.
