Interfacing with Existing Traditions, and the Prospect

Abstract

When a series is finished, the easiest thing to do is say one more sentence on its behalf that it never said.

Seven essays worked inside the machine, each with its own object, each keeping the same discipline: no naming of outside theorists, no citing of historical events, no drawing on normative force. That discipline kept them clean, and it also made certain sentences unsayable. They cannot say what the machine looks like as a whole, and they cannot say where it parts from machines other people have built.

This one stands outside and says those few sentences. Standing outside takes another discipline, so this piece is exempted from the no-naming rule. The exemption reaches only naming: it still raises no new object-level proposition, and object-level normative force is still not drawn on.

Three things get done here. First, saying what kind of machine this is — not one principle but three ledgers, with two bars on back-flow between them. Second, putting the machine on the map of existing value theory: where it parts from eight traditions it engages directly, and where seven others simply are not speaking on the same ground. Third, registering what the machine stopped short of — and not calling all of it remainder, because a construct's remainder is only one of six kinds of not-having-gone-on.

1. Not One Principle, but Three Ledgers

The prequel cleared the referential space; six essays then raised the machine. Together they are one construct. What that construct raised is easily gathered into one handsome principle, and gathering it that way distorts it — because the six were not reading the same kind of thing at all.

One general note first: the three ledgers below are analytic ledgers, not boxes for filing essays. What is recorded at the end of each is who raised that ledger, and more than they do work on it.

The constitutive ledger. It asks how a content becomes some bearer's value-content. Its words are: domain of bearers, value-source, candidate, first-person avowal, the standing of a value-content. Raised by Essays One and Two.

The running ledger. It asks how what already holds moves in time. Its words are: the presence of a source-position, reachability, the rise and fall of concrete contents, the centre of gravity, revision and withdrawal. Raised by Essay Four, while Essay Three reads what it looks like when an external end has been at it.

The ledger of action and relation. It asks what to do when two demands collide, and what happens between two bearers. Its words are: order of action, adjudication, cultivation, colonization, resonance, joint audit, the boundary where they meet. Raised by Essays Five and Six.

An essay can cross ledgers, and most do. Essay Three's relational conditions come in from outside, act on appearance, reachability and revision — all running channels — and finally generate a false reading that a constituting is complete; it crosses all three. Essay Six's first proposition returns to the constitutive ledger, its second is at the layer of epistemic authority, and only the later ones are on action and relation.

The ledgers are not there so each essay gets one cell. They are there to forbid subjects from impersonating one another. The constitutive ledger's subjects are contents and places; the running ledger's are readings; the ledger of action and relation is a compound one, with action and relation as two columns, whose subjects include demands for action, orders of action, events, relational channels, authority and boundaries. Merge the three into one and you must first flatten those subjects — and after the flattening, every essay's precision is gone.

2. Two Bars on Back-Flow

Three ledgers side by side is not yet enough, because what matters is not that they each speak for themselves. It is what is not allowed to travel between them. Seven essays together raise two bars.

First: readings of running, action, consequences and relations do not by themselves flow back into a value-source or a value-standing.

Essay Four put it most bluntly when it raised the independence of output and position: taking something visible in place of something invisible in principle, substituting the easy for the hard, usually works elsewhere and does not work here, because the reading substituted in does not prove the thing to be proved. Essay Five said yielding is not withdrawal, because the act of yielding cannot do what withdrawal does. Essay Six said the conditions, plans and consequences in the world can be checked together, and those readings do not flow back into value-standing. Three places, one rule.

Second: external conditions can shape appearance, reachability, action and relational channels, and cannot by themselves perform the first-person constituting.

Essay One, raising cultivation, said the outside can loosen another's grid. Essay Three, raising colonization, said an external relation can form occupation at the place of appearance, counterfeit constituting by introjection at the constitutive place, and form locking at the revisable place. Essay Six, raising the other, said appearance, social shaping and cultivation can all come from outside, and the constituting that makes a content his value-content is not made here in me. Three places, one rule.

These two are what the six essays jointly made. They are not derived from some more fundamental principle. They are the two no-entry lines left between the ledgers after each essay had done its work on its own.

3. Four Nodes, Not Four Ways of Saying One Thing

Four nodes get used again and again across the three ledgers. Listing them is not a claim that they are equivalent.

The domain of bearers. End-value is borne by bearers. The domain has four cells, and the fourth — no door, animals for instance — covers an object that has its own experience and can be an end that is cared about, without filling the place of an end-value bearer.

First-person avowal. A content becomes someone's value only through his own avowal — and avowal is not verification: the bearer is not ascertaining a fact that already obtains, he is claiming it in the working of his own law.

No common external ruler. Once a thing is the bearer's own and issues from its own law, there is no coordinate system outside that law which could pass a cross-level or cross-subject verdict of value upon it.

The source is not placed outside. Across the domain of bearers, the source of end-value is anchored in the standing as an end not being externally placed; for a complete subject its running is anchored in the autonomous reflexive operation of its own law; for a subject-to-be the source is already there while the mode of running is still coming into being.

The four support one another; they are not four wordings of one proposition. That the source is on the bearer's side does not automatically entail that no cross-subject aggregation is possible: a theory that lets utility depend on the subject and still builds an aggregation function is not formally contradictory. Conversely, holding that there is no common measure does not automatically entail that the source depends on the subject: an objective value pluralism can perfectly well hold that values are objective and mutually incommensurable. And that value is borne by bearers does not automatically entail that first-person avowal is the sole constituting event — that took Essay Two's independent argument. Between the four there are dependencies, not equivalences, and this essay does not gather them into one sentence.

And this machine is itself one construct. Every construct has a residue it cannot chisel through — that is the remainder. Seven essays are one construct: they have their objects, their criteria, and things they can and cannot read, and therefore they have a remainder. But the remainder is not everything this essay has to register later on. There are also objects adjacent in jurisdiction that were never raised as questions, limit-conclusions already reached, research candidates this essay proposes, and handovers whose address is already fixed. Calling all of that remainder would cost the word its precision.

4. Different Layers, and Three Registers

Before any interfacing, the lines have to be drawn cleanly, or locating slides into judging — and interfacing without first separating layers most easily reads two sides' remarks from different layers as a head-on collision.

Metaethics, value theory, normative ethics and welfare theory are not on one level. Metaethics asks what an evaluative judgment is, whether it has a truth value, and where the ground of that truth lies. Normative ethics asks how right action is determined. Welfare theory asks what is good for a person. What this series' layer asks is: how a content becomes some bearer's value-content, how it runs, and what to do when two collide.

The distinction matters because metaethical positions mostly give no answer to this series' first question. A value realist can assign value to persons, to states of affairs, to experiences, to activities; realism itself does not settle who the bearer is. So taking a metaethical position as the opponent in a dispute about bearers presses two layers into one.

Three questions are often carried by one word, and they have to be separated. Register one, constitutive dependence: does a particular value-content hold only in dependence on the bearer's avowal. Here the series has a definite position: first-person avowal is the sole constituting place on the axis of occurrence, and avowal is not verification.

Register two, the ground of truth: on what are judgments about avowal, value and relations true. Here the series has no complete position, and this essay does not acquire one for it. Note that a value-content's being constituted by a subject and there being an objective ground of truth for judgments about it are two things. Even with content coming by constitution, the following can still be objective facts: whether he ever completed that avowal; whether that content still has standing now; whether the channel of revision has been sealed; whether some external attribution is counterfeiting constitution. So subject-dependence in constitution is not anti-realism about truth. Metaethics itself disputes whether constructivism counts as realism and whether objectivity requires mind-independence; this series does not settle that whole layer in one stroke from constitutive dependence.

Register three, epistemic authority: what the first person, the third person and joint procedures can each know. Here the series has a partial position: external underdetermination, the upper bound of audit, and the distribution of authority in joint audit.

So the metaethical placement of this series comes to one sentence: it has a definite position on the constitutive dependence of particular value-contents, a partial position on epistemic authority, and no closed theory of semantics, truth-grounding or objectivity. That is not modesty. It is to stop the reader filing it prematurely under Humean constructivism or anti-realism generally.

5. Three Subject-Relativities, Three Senses of an Outside Standpoint

Three things called subject-relative do not entail one another. One: good for someone — something in a person's life makes his life go better. Two: agent-relative reasons — the form of the reason ineliminably mentions that agent. Three: mind-dependence — whether some value fact metaphysically depends on attitudes, practice or rational activity.

A realist can perfectly well accept agent-relative reasons; a constructivist can perfectly well construct universally valid, agent-neutral requirements. What this series says — that value is borne by bearers — falls on the constitutive side and on neither of the first two. It says the constituting act that makes a content value-content is on the bearer's side. It does not say value is always good for someone, and it does not say every reason must mention the agent in its form.

Likewise, a standpoint outside the subject has three senses. One: a mind-independent ground of truth — an evaluative judgment's truth does not depend on anyone's attitude. Two: an impartial standpoint — an evaluative position that does not change according to who is acting. Three: a universal practical standpoint any rational subject can occupy.

What the head proposition denies is the kind of outside standpoint that could pass verdict on a bearer's own value-standing. That denial falls in the second sense, and only on the object value-standing. It does not adjudicate the first sense, and does not deny that impartial evaluative positions can hold on other objects. The third sense — the universal legislative standpoint — differs from the first two: it is not an observer's view standing outside everyone, but the legislative place any rational will, as rational will, must be able to occupy. These distinctions bear weight when the consequentialists and the Mohists come up.

And the method of interfacing. Putting a tradition into the coordinates says where it draws the problem, and on which line this series parts from it. It does not say who is right. The rule is not invented here — the power-theory branch has a meta-level statement of its own saying that interfacing with traditions is locating them in the coordinate system, not adjudicating rank.

Holding to it is not easy. Draw the line vaguely and locating slides into judging; write the opponent a little weaker and locating becomes self-congratulation. So this essay takes a clumsier route: state each tradition first in its own strongest form, then point at which line the disagreement falls on, and only then say which side this series takes on that line. Where the series has reached no judgment, write that down, and do not let the opponent's weak spot stand in for one's own proof.

6. Kant: A Shared Negative Mark

Kant is not one of the eight. He is this series' acknowledged lineage, and the division between dignity and price stands in a more specific relation to it than lineage suggests: at one negative mark, the two meet.

In the Groundwork Kant separates what has a price from what has dignity. The criterion is replaceability: what has a price can be replaced by an equivalent; what is above all price and therefore admits no such equivalent exchange has dignity.

When the prequel cleared the referential space, the first thing it cut away was price. It did not cut by declaring price low and end-value high — one of the two locks on the emblem forbids exactly that reading: the pearl and the casket divide reference, they do not rank. It cut by constitutive conditions: the number of subjects is not rhetoric here but constitution. Exchange takes a counterparty, conversion takes a public ruler, replacement takes an equivalent; every constituting act of price contains a counterparty place, and the constituting of end-value contains no such place.

Replacement takes an equivalent is where the two meet. The difference is which side each argues from, and what else each carries. Kant argues from standing: a person's standing admits no equivalent exchange. The prequel argues from constitutive conditions: every constituting act of price requires a counterparty place, and the constituting of end-value does not. The solitary-subject thought experiment is that argument's form — in a universe with one subject, price's constitutive conditions all fail, and end-value holds all the same.

The coincidence is real, and its extent has to be stated exactly. Non-equivalent-replaceability is a negative mark. It marks the line between dignity and price; it is not a complete constitutive account of dignity. Kant's dignity is further bound up with personhood, moral capacity and autonomous legislation, and those are not exhausted by this one criterion. So what is shared is this one negative mark — not a claim that this series has given a complete explanation of Kantian dignity.

7. Four Objects Kept Apart

Follow the coincidence downstream and it is easy to go too far in one breath. Four objects sit very close here.

One: a person's standing as an end. In this series that holds prior to anyone's avowal — the other is an end, and that is a fact before I acknowledge it.

Two: a particular content's first-person value-standing. That holds only through the bearer's own avowal — and avowal is not verification.

Three: the anchoring of the source of value. This says which side the place that gives value is on — the source not placed outside.

Four: the structure of colonization. A content standing, in the bearer, as constitution completed, while that constituting was not made in his own law.

The four are not one thing. What first-person avowal constitutes is the second, not the first: a man who does not avow his own standing as an end does not thereby lose it. The third is a structural fact about a place; the fourth is a structural event about relation and running. Press the four into one sentence and it reads forcefully and states something untrue.

And the third essay holds three things at once here, each needed. First, no real constituting is completed outside: a content stands as constitution completed while that constituting was not made in the bearer's own law, and what occupies that place is an external end. Second, the three places are structurally permanent — colonization acts always on reachability, never on presence, and the constitutive place stays locked inside the bearer's own law. Third, occupation, introjection and locking remain that essay's own formal structural words, and what it asks head-on when judging colonization is whether the constitutive place is occupied by an external end.

So the accurate statement is: an external end occupies the function of the constitutive place, so that an external warrant counterfeits, in relation and in running, a first-person constituting already complete — while that constituting was never actually made outside, and the constitutive place was not taken away. Occupying a function and taking a place away are two things.

This also explains why audit's conclusions are limited to the form of places and signatures. The constitutive place is permanent, what the outside can get is readings on relations and channels, and the third person cannot close a first-person constituting out of those readings. So audit can ask only whether that place is open or shut now, and whether those roads are passable.

8. How Far the Coincidence Runs

The conclusion can be written in one line: Kant's dignity and this series' source-not-placed-outside coincide structurally at non-equivalent-replaceability, at autonomy, and at standing not being wholly externally placed — and they are not the same concept. Colonization is one specific structural way of violating subjecthood, not a complete definition of a violation of dignity.

Saying they coincide is useful; saying they are identical does harm. Useful, because the constitutive-conditions argument by which this series cut price away yields, from inside itself, a non-substitutability boundary adjacent to non-equivalent-replaceability — a route that need not first posit an absolute value. And it must be said precisely: it does not thereby constitute a second proof of Kant's dignity thesis. Needs no equivalent and never admits replacement by an equivalent are not the same modality. Harmful, because Kant's dignity is bound to personhood, moral capacity and autonomous legislation, for which this series gives no correspondences one by one; claiming identity is claiming, on the series' behalf, things it never wrote.

There is a live interpretive dispute about dignity in Kant scholarship, and this reading takes no side in it — so where it does stand has to be said. On one side, a substantive-value reading: Wood puts the objective value of rational nature at the centre, taking the move from the universal-law formula to the humanity formula as a move from pure form into substantive content; that side tends to say humanity has an unconditional value from which the duty of respect is explained. The other side is not simple formalism: Sensen resists reading dignity as an absolute value-property first discovered and then used to derive duties of respect, tying dignity and respect more tightly to rational law and prescription; Bojanowski agrees Kant is no moral intuitionist while resisting the denial of humanity's absolute value, holding that the idealist structure of practical reason and absolute value can coexist.

This series takes no side, because its account of the source not being placed outside is neither a property nor a prescription. It is a place. The place that gives value is on the bearer's side, and that can be argued from constitutive conditions — which is exactly what the solitary-subject experiment argues.

The place has its own cost and its own benefit in that dispute. The cost: it cannot, like the substantive-value reading, derive a duty straight from a value — object-level normative force is never drawn on, so it cannot say what a person ought to do. The benefit: it need not answer the question that embarrasses the substantive-value reading, namely what kind of thing that absolute value is. And in honesty: not taking a side is not having solved the dispute. This series offers another route, and whether that route can replace what the two sides are trying to explain, this essay does not judge.

There is a strong objection ready to hand on the Kantian side: humanity is an objective end, and not because a person first chooses in the first person to have dignity; a man who does not avow his own dignity, who even avows a maxim of self-enslavement, is not thereby released from the humanity formula.

This series agrees, and the agreement is its own: two steps, already separated. Step one is the fact — this particular other is also an end, and the other is an end before I acknowledge it. Step two is the response — acknowledging and taking up that fact from the first-person place; acknowledgment acknowledges and takes up the fact, it does not make it. What first-person avowal accomplishes was never anyone's standing as an end. It is the second of the four objects: a particular content taking value-standing under this bearer's name. The standing is at the fact step, the claiming of a content at the response step. Keep the two apart, and the objection is not hitting a position this series holds.

One more thing to keep apart, and Kant scholarship argues about it too: respecting another's humanity and approving every end he chooses are not one thing. Dean folds a morally good will into the core of humanity; the criticism replies that even where a man's particular choice is evil, the capacity to choose must still be respected. On the value-theory side, the three limits say which operations I do not have on another's values — reading cannot close into a reading guaranteed complete, value-standings take no common external ruler, relational facts do not merge existing sources. Not one of the three says I must approve every content under his name. Not being able to operate on it, and having to approve it, are two things; this series judges the former and not the latter.

9. Fitting Attitudes, and Scheler

The eight are ordered by how far out the line of disagreement lies: first what makes a particular content's standing hold, then whether ranking is possible, then the question of the other, and last whether there is a standpoint outside the subject. One limit first: all the disagreements below are limited to the subject a particular value-content's standing. This series does not hold that all value facts fail to exist before acknowledgment — the other's being an end is a fact prior to my acknowledgment, the structural shape of a value-source is not made by some act of claiming, and the world's conditions and relational channels each hold on their own. So the fault line is not discovered or constructed. It is: is a particular end-value content's standing under some bearer's name constituted by his first-person avowal, or explained by a fittingness, a reason-relation or an objective rank independent of actual avowal.

The fitting-attitude family's common form is not whatever I actually like has value. It is: a thing's evaluative standing is to be explained by what attitude toward it is fitting, or what normative reason we have to take such an attitude. Brentano on correct love and hate, Ewing on the fitting attitude of approval, Gibbard on apt feeling, and Scanlon bringing the question back into contemporary value theory are key nodes of one family of thought — not a single chain of transmission.

Buck-passing is a stronger step. Scanlon holds that being valuable is not an additional first-order reason-providing property: to say a thing is valuable is to say it has certain other properties, and it is those properties that give us reasons to value it or respond in certain ways. The step is often split into a positive claim and a more contested negative one, and the split needs care: if the positive claim only says value is constitutively linked to some fitting response, most of the family accepts it; if it already says reasons are provided by other properties rather than by value properties, that is part of Scanlon's version and cannot be read back into earlier authors.

The line of disagreement is here, and the strongest form of the objection is not that experts know better than the person himself. It is conceptual: a standard of fittingness or of reasons is not constituted by actual claiming. A man can actually approve of something out of deception, out of fear, out of false factual belief; conversely he can fail, out of depression, ignorance or distorted socialization, to appreciate what was worth cherishing. If a content's evaluative standing is explained by the fitting response, actual claiming may be neither sufficient nor necessary.

This series' answer does not go around that. Essay Two put it directly: avowal is not verification — the bearer is not ascertaining a fact that already obtains, not determining whether he really does care about something; he is claiming it in the working of his own law. So the disagreement can be stated exactly: the fitting-attitude view ties a particular content's evaluative standing to a fittingness standard independent of actual claiming; this series ties it to that claiming in the working of the bearer's own law. Two different constitutive accounts of the same grounding question, not two observations of one empirical fact.

The family's own famous difficulty comes from the same place: the wrong kind of reasons. A demon can threaten to punish you unless you admire something worthless; you then really do have a prudential reason to admire it, and that reason seems not to make it admirable in the least. So the problem is not finding a reason but separating, non-circularly, reasons given by the object from reasons given by the consequences of the attitude. Rabinowicz and Rønnow-Rasmussen, and Olson among others, have treated the difficulty specifically. If in the end the right kind of reason can only be defined as the kind that reflects the object's value, the direction of explaining value by reasons has circled back. This essay does not judge whether the difficulty succeeds; it points out that it lies at the same place as the disagreement.

Scheler is not usually in the list, and this essay takes him up because he is the head proposition's most direct opponent. He takes values to be objective value-qualities given in intentional feeling, and holds that there is an objective order of rank among value-modalities. His basic modalities are four layers: the agreeable and disagreeable, vital values, spiritual values, the holy and unholy. The useful is not among the four; it is a derivative value founded on the agreeable.

Do not build a straw man first. Scheler's rank-order is not the ladder the prequel struck out. What the prequel cut was putting values of different levels on one ruler to rank them; Scheler's order precisely denies homogeneous units. The disagreement is not about the ruler. It is about the ground of the ordering. Scheler puts the ground of the rank-order in what intentional feeling discloses; this series ties a particular content's standing to the bearer's own law and first-person constituting. There is no common ground beneath the two, so neither proves the other. The head proposition can refuse that rank-order only within this series' premises; it is no internal refutation of Scheler — and Scheler's order is no internal refutation of this series either.

This is where locate, do not adjudicate bears hardest. Saying this series has refuted Scheler treats one's own premises as public premises; saying the two cannot converse at all erases a real disagreement. The accurate sentence is one: the disagreement is at the foundation, and the choice of foundation is not decided by either side's internal argument.

10. Consequentialism

The line moves. The first two argued about what makes a particular content's standing hold; this one and the next argue about whether ranking is possible.

Consequentialism's most general form is not maximizing pleasure. It is tying the rightness of an action functionally, in some way, to an evaluation of outcomes: who is acting does not change which overall outcomes are better. That is the agent-neutral version; there are agent-relative versions letting each agent use a different evaluative function.

Again, no straw man. Standard maximizing models usually assume a rich enough ordering of outcomes, and neither cardinal utility nor a single physical unit is a logical requirement of consequentialism itself; many versions get by with an ordinal better than. Nor is completeness of the ordering a logical truth: versions allowing incomparability and a partial order can still select maximal elements, only without a unique best.

Where the line falls needs one thing separated first. A general agent-neutral consequentialism needs an evaluation of outcomes that does not change with the agent's identity, and the object of that evaluation need not be anyone's end-value standing; those two are not the same. This series handles how particular value-contents hold under a bearer's name; it is not a complete theory of the value of states of affairs, and therefore cannot supply consequentialism with a function for evaluating outcomes. That is first of all a non-supply, not a head-on conflict. And recall the three senses: consequentialism wants the second, impartiality — not necessarily the first, a mind-independent ground of truth.

What the series can say here has to be said in three layers, or the outcome-ordering gets pressed back into value-standing. First layer, non-supply. Consequentialism hands the evaluation of outcomes and states of affairs to a theory of the value of states of affairs; this series handles how particular value-contents hold under a bearer's name. Two different modules; the series cannot fill that one. Second layer, definite conflict. If some version puts a bearer's value-standing itself on a common scale, or takes an outcome-ordering directly off that scale, it collides head-on with no common external ruler. That conflict is real. Third layer, not judged. If the outcome-ordering uses welfare, harm, resources, capabilities, rights-satisfaction, risk or some other informational basis, then it is not ordering anyone's value-standing, and value theory alone cannot support or refute it. An impartial evaluative position and a position outside the law that can pass verdict on personal value-standing are not the same thing; equating them is exactly the back-flow this essay bars.

And so: that standing takes only holding-or-not and no quantity does not prove a complete outcome-ordering cannot hold. Even where one input takes only presence or absence, one can still build a lexicographic order, set inclusion, counts of satisfaction, priority rules, or other outcome variables. This series has not supplied an outcome function is true. This series has proved a complete outcome function cannot hold is not.

The deontological side forms an adjacent opposition to some agent-neutral totalizing moves, on different reasons and with a different subject. Agent-centred restrictions say some acts should not be done by me even if doing them would reduce the total of the same kind of wrong. Scheffler's agent-centred prerogative is milder: even if the best overall outcome is a genuine reason, an agent may be permitted not to sacrifice his projects in a wholly impartial way. Williams' integrity objection stresses that treating a person's projects as one input in the world's total utility function changes his relation to his own projects. Korsgaard warns that agent-relative and deontological are not logical synonyms — that formal distinction cannot be equated with the consequentialist/deontological divide. This series does not join the agent-relative value theories just because it shares an opponent with the deontological side: what it judges is not whether the form of a reason mentions the agent, but which side the place that constitutes value-content is on.

11. Sen

This is the hardest of the eight to fend off, and what it shows is not a question about where a quantity belongs. It is a whole stretch of ground this series never entered.

Remove three common equals signs first: preference is not utility, utility is not welfare. Preference, in formal theory, is usually a comparison relation among options. Utility, in modern decision theory, is first of all a representation of preference — not a Benthamite quantity of directly observable psychic pleasure. Welfare says how a person's life goes for that person. A preference-satisfaction theory of welfare can treat satisfied preferences as constituting or indicating welfare, but that is a substantive theoretical assumption, not the mathematical definition of a utility representation.

Harsanyi's representation theorem can be fended off. This is the aggregation theorem, not the impartial-observer one. Its domain is common lotteries — options over one and the same set of probability distributions; individual and social preferences must both satisfy expected-utility structure; add a Pareto or unanimity condition, especially that if everyone is indifferent between two lotteries then society is too, and social utility comes out as an affine or weighted sum of individual utilities. That does not prove a natural utility yardstick exists in the universe. Cardinality comes from the lottery axioms and gives each person a scale unique only up to positive affine transformation; interpersonal comparability of units is not thereby produced, since changing an individual's scale can be absorbed by weights. To say equal-weight summation is ethically unique still needs a normalization or another bridge. What this series opposes is not that theorem.

Sen cannot be fended off, because he does not want that yardstick. He separates three questions: measurability, interpersonal comparability, aggregation. Measurability is how much information a person's utility representation retains; interpersonal comparability is whether meaningful contrasts can be drawn between different people's representations; aggregation is combining them into a social evaluation. The three must not be conflated, and none automatically entails the others — and aggregation is the operation forming a social ordering out of individual information, not a third measurement dimension of the same type as the first two. What he holds is partial comparability: between full comparability and none at all there is a structured middle ground, from which partial social orderings can be had without pretending a perfect ruler exists.

Sen's work shows precisely this: interpersonal comparison need not have only one total quantity; the information for comparison can be incomplete; a social ordering can be a partial order; the informational basis may be utility, welfare, functionings, capabilities or something else; and comparable does not mean summable. So the question this tradition shows up has to be rewritten. It is not which side that quantity falls on. It is: what relation holds between the various informational bases public evaluation uses across subjects, and first-person end-value standing.

Under that question lie at least five things this series has not fully handled, having given only two boundaries: what welfare, utility, capability, resources, health, opportunity and consequences each have as their subject; which of them can be jointly checked; which can form partial comparisons or public orderings; why they do not thereby flow back into a person's value-standing; and where the force comes from when a public evaluation acquires force in action or institutions. The two boundaries are joint checking and the bar on back-flow: value-standings take no common external ruler, while the world's conditions, plans and consequences can be checked together and those readings do not flow back into value-standing. So this series does not forbid all cross-subject comparison. It forbids the readings of comparison flowing back onto value-standing.

12. Recognition Theory, and Levinas

The line moves again, from ranking to the other. Recognition theory is not one unified claim and has to be layered first. Hegel's recognition is said within the developmental structure of consciousness and right; Honneth divides recognition into love, legal recognition and solidarity, answering to self-confidence, self-respect and self-esteem, with the absence of recognition injuring these practical self-relations in the form of disrespect; Fraser resists understanding recognition as an intersubjective psychological relation, arguing for a status model in which the core of misrecognition is institutionalized cultural value patterns preventing people from participating as peers — and therefore to be handled together with redistribution. In her framework cultural patterns are not the only obstacle; material deprivation likewise impedes equal participation.

This tradition is not the simple reverse of this series. On the Hegel–Honneth line, the core of mutual recognition precisely requires treating the other as an autonomous and capable judge rather than an object to be assessed. So it runs in the same direction as the three limits, not against them.

The line falls elsewhere, and only on one of the strands. Hegel and Honneth deny this picture: a complete, autonomous subject first exists independently and then contingently enters relations with others. And the solitary-subject experiment positively holds that the minimal condition for end-value needs no counterparty; the solitary subject is self-sufficient with the formal remainder-place empty.

The two really part here, and which strand parts has to be said precisely. What meets the solitary subject head-on is the Hegel–Honneth line, which makes practical self-relations depend on structures of recognition. Fraser's line locates misrecognition first as institutionalized status subordination, and is adjacent rather to institutions. This series says the holding of end-value does not depend on a second subject, and that what recognition accomplishes is something else. It does not deny that relations do enormous work in forming a person — cultivation and colonization both say the outside gets in. What it denies is that the constituting act making a content value-content requires a second party. Dependence and constitution are two things.

Levinas stands in the least even relation of all: half close, half in head-on conflict, and the conflict at precisely this series' most important place. A limit first: starting from the irreducibility of the other points most accurately at him alone. Buber's dialogical philosophy, Løgstrup's ethical demand, Derrida's inheritance and critique are adjacent in direction and very different in theoretical structure; grouping them as one school of the other is an analytic convenience, not a self-identified unified doctrine.

His most distinctive reversal: the ethical relation is not that a cognizing subject first identifies another as having some property or value and duty follows. In the face-to-face encounter the other presents himself in a way that cannot be fully absorbed by my concepts, and I find myself already placed under responsibility. The other of Totality and Infinity is an exteriority, and not merely spatially outside me: the other cannot be reduced to my representation, my concept, or a content within my totality.

The close half: I cannot claim, by totalizing cognition, to have fully grasped who he is. That runs with the first limit — third-person evidence does not close into a reading guaranteed complete. Both refuse the same thing: settling the other side's account with a representation of one's own making.

The conflicting half, and it conflicts cleanly. The other's ethical demand does not hold on condition of my avowal; responsibility is, in the structure of meaning, prior even to my freely choosing to accept it. And what this series holds is that a content becomes my value-content only through my own first-person avowal. Where the disagreement really falls admits two readings. Read that responsibility as a value-content, and the two conflict head-on, and this series' answer is that avowal is not verification. Read it as a normative requirement this series does not handle, and the two do not conflict but simply speak past each other, since object-level normative force is never drawn on. Both routes are pointed out, and neither is adjudicated. That is the cost of locate, do not adjudicate, not an evasion.

One structural analogy is available. He does not stop at each single other being incomparable. Once a third party appears — another other, and all the rest — one must ask how infinite responsibility to the one before me coexists with the demands of others. Justice, comparison, weighing and the necessity of institutions are born there. So he always refuses all comparison is inaccurate; accurately, comparison is secondary, forced by multiple others into justice. And the sixth essay's range turns at the same place: one particular other, then between two bearers, then all — and the second of those is where comparison first becomes a problem. The shapes are analogous: at the passage from two to many, comparison becomes a question that must be answered. An analogy only, not an isomorphism: his third party is a question of justice forced out from inside the ethical relation by infinite responsibility, while the increasing range is this series' own order of argument. He goes toward justice and institutions; this series goes toward conditions in the world that can be checked together while the readings do not flow back into value-standing.

13. Care Ethics, and Adaptive Preferences

This one strikes at the subject-to-be, and it brings the hardest question of the eight.

What care ethics jointly opposes is not all principles. It is the picture that presupposes the mature moral agent as mutually independent, with dependence only an occasional exception. It starts from dependence, care, vulnerability and concrete relations. Tronto divides caring into four phases — caring about, taking care of, care-giving, care-receiving — with four corresponding moral qualities: attentiveness, responsibility, competence, responsiveness. The two sets are not one set. Kittay pushes inevitable dependence and the labour of care into the centre of a theory of justice. And relational autonomy does not deny self-determination; it holds that the capacity for self-determination itself depends on social relations and institutional conditions.

The first disagreement need not be made an opposition. This series takes the bearer as its unit while this tradition starts from relation and dependence; but the series does not deny that relations do enormous work in forming a person. It denies only that the constituting act making a content value-content requires a second party. Dependence and constitution are two things.

The hard one is the second, and here the series cannot answer in full. By way of adaptive preferences the objection can be put very sharply: a person raised under long-term adverse conditions may sincerely report satisfaction, and that satisfaction is exactly what the adverse conditions shaped. If a content takes standing under her name merely by being avowed in the first person, can a third party say the avowal itself is defective?

Answering that as a binary — either it really is hers, or it is colonization, and the third person cannot tell — leaves out far too much. She may genuinely avow while the facts she relies on are badly wrong; may genuinely avow while her options are extremely constrained; the avowal can be real while living by it damages her health and opportunities; a preference can be formed under oppression without her thereby losing agency; and one content can contain real avowal, external shaping and inescapable conditions at once. The literature on adaptive preferences argues about these internally; there is no agreed simple dichotomy.

What this series can give here is one ledger, not all the ledgers.

The three can hold at once, and they do not settle each other automatically. A content taking standing on the first does not thereby score on the second; finding a road sealed on the third does not automatically cancel standing on the first — it says that place has to be audited separately by the colonization criterion.

So the accurate answer to this line is: it can add, to the discussion of adaptive preferences, one ledger of constitution and channels. The third person can form fallible, revisable judgments about places and channels; it cannot perform the person's avowal for her, and cannot upgrade its judgment into a final certification. And this series cannot use that ledger to replace the evaluation of welfare, the review of rights, and judgments of fact. The latter three it has not raised, and this essay does not raise them for it.

One wording deserves care. Care ethics having no ruler does not mean choosing arbitrarily; what it asks for is situation-sensitive practical judgment. And the term judgment occurs zero times in the seven essays and is not raised as an independent explanatory mechanism; its full theoretical work is handed to the theory of action. So this series does not contend with it here. It is simply not speaking on the same ground.

LedgerWhat it asksWhat this series has
Value-standingHas this content taken her first-person avowalConstituting is completed by the bearer in the first person; the third person can form fallible, revisable judgments, cannot perform the avowal, and cannot upgrade a judgment into final certification
Welfare and interestWhat living by it does to her health, capabilities, opportunities and situationNot raised by this series
Power and rightsWas there coercion, sealing, manipulation, or no way out in how it formedPartly raised; the rest belongs to power theory and rights theory

14. The Mohists

The last one strikes at the second of the three senses: is there an evaluative position that does not change according to who is acting.

The Mohists raise fa — standards — as a gauge, holding that one who governs the world cannot be without a standard, and that the standard cannot be taken merely from parents, teachers or rulers; nothing is like taking heaven as the standard. Fa here is norm and standard, not legislation in the modern sense. Inclusive care and mutual benefit are set up as the public standard, appealing to heaven's impartiality: what heaven desires, do; what heaven does not desire, stop. Of all the traditions taken up here, this is the closest to a public standard of adjudication above every private standpoint.

Keep its own context, and do not modernize it. The Mohists' heaven is not a neutral observer's position; it desires and detests, rewards the good and punishes the violent. Taking the standard from heaven is because heaven's conduct is broad and impartial. Writing it as a personal god in the modern sense is disputed, and this essay does not take that step. And note: the Mohists are not simple divine-command theorists — they also give independent reasons of rightness, benefit and order for why heaven's will is worth taking as a standard. This resembles the impartial evaluative standpoint consequentialism wants in form and differs in ground: consequentialist impartiality is a methodological requirement; Mohist impartiality is a cosmological ground. Writing the Mohists up as Chinese utilitarianism is both inaccurate and destroys the value of this interfacing.

It is tempting to cite Against Music and Moderation in Funerals as showing the Mohists judging some people's cherished rites as improper by the benefit of all under heaven, and so reaching into the side where value holds. The texts themselves do not take that step. Against Music explicitly grants that the ear knows music as pleasing, the eye knows ornament as beautiful, the mouth knows fine food as sweet — and only then, because the great lords have instruments made, levy taxes and consume labour, judges it as not according with the affairs of the sage kings above and not according with the benefit of the myriad people below. Moderation in Funerals likewise tests lavish burial and long mourning, as an institutionalized practice, against wealth, population and order. So what the Mohists judge is music-making and lavish burial as public practice, governance and allocation of resources — not a proof that what is cherished is not worth cherishing. Against Music even contains a line that reads almost as a pre-emptive exclusion of that misreading.

So the two do not overlap in object. Mohist fa judges conduct and governance; this series judges how a content becomes some bearer's value. And one can still ask: can a public standard restrict actions organized out of a person's values without thereby acquiring the standing to rewrite that person's value-standing?

That question lands exactly on the two bars. If a public standard acts only on the action side, it does not conflict with the second bar. If it goes further and lets a judgment of conduct flow back into a judgment of that person's value-standing, that is where it collides. On the texts checked above, the Mohists fall on the first side: they judge practice and governance, and do not flow back. So the disagreement is not about whether there is a public standard, and not about the Mohists overreaching. It is elsewhere: this series denies that there exists a coordinate system outside the law which could pass verdict on a bearer's own value-standing, and Mohist fa does not claim that standing. The two do not collide — and the value of this interfacing lies exactly there: a tradition holding a public standard without reaching into the holding of value shows that a public standard and the head proposition can coexist.

A neighbouring note. The Confucian line contrasts with this series elsewhere, not on the question of standpoint. Shu — do not impose on others what you would not want — takes one's own side as the starting point and extends to the other. This series does not walk that way: the other is an end is a premise here, not a conclusion drawn from my own being an end; only after two standings hold separately does the source not being placed outside give a same-typed structure on both sides. So both enter the relation to the other through first-person language, and the structure of inference differs. This essay therefore does not make it an ally: shu is a maxim for treating others; this series' step is a premise and a separation of ledgers.

15. Where the Other Seven Stand

Seven traditions do not collide with this series directly, or their point of collision is already covered above. Only their position in the coordinates is given.

The three metaethical dividing lines. Cognitivism versus non-cognitivism divides on whether normative judgments have truth-apt propositional content; realism versus error theory divides on whether such discourse systematically fails — Mackie held that ordinary moral judgments presuppose objective values not in the world and are therefore systematically false on their face semantics; robust realism versus mind-dependence views divides on whether the ground of truth is independent of attitudes. None of the three settles who bears value. And since this series has taken no position on truth-grounding, it has no position to mark on any of the three. That is not an omission. It is an unclosed place.

Constructivism is worth stating most carefully, being nearest. Korsgaard's procedural realism says normative questions have correct answers because there are correct procedures of practical reason, not because a procedure is discovering an independent normative domain prior to it. Street ties the substantive content of reasons to an agent's contingent evaluative standpoint. Near, and not to be filed under it: Street's evaluative standpoint is a whole standpoint structured by reflective consistency, not an explicit first-person act of claiming; what this series raises is a constituting event — a content already holding candidacy in some value-source domain taking, in the working of the bearer's own law, a status of being invocable, restatable and revisable. The two may be near in opposing values entirely independent of evaluative activity, and this series currently offers no complete theory of reasons, of truth, or of a reflective-consistency procedure, and so cannot be formally filed under Humean constructivism. That is the same unclosure as register two.

Value pluralism and incommensurability. Three words apart: incommensurable means lacking a common unit of measure; incomparable means no comparison relation holds between two items; the first does not entail the second. Chang proposes a fourth relation — parity — where two items under an evaluative covering are neither better, nor worse, nor equal, and still within one evaluative space. This series' position here goes only so far: it holds definitely that value-standings take no common external ruler and rejects the predicates better, worse and equal. Whether it further holds incomparability, or allows some non-metric relation, the object-level text has not judged. And the fact that the world's conditions and consequences can be jointly checked cannot settle it: objects on the world side entering joint evaluation says nothing about a positive comparison relation between two value-standings.

Preference, utility, welfare in economics — the three equals signs come off, as above; price was already routed out by the prequel, and preference, utility and welfare still have to be placed separately: their relation to end-value standing cannot be settled by price's routing. The place that really meets is Sen, taken up above. Harsanyi's theorem: under expected-utility axioms and certain consistency conditions, social evaluation has a weighted-sum representation. That does not prove a natural utility yardstick exists; it proves that under explicit normative and representational conditions, aggregation can have a strict structure. And what it does not solve must be said: it does not itself answer which welfare information is interpersonally comparable, where the weights come from, or what the normative ground is. This series does not oppose the theorem, so the two are not opposed.

The Confucian line was placed above. And it is not advisable to pretend there is a unified East Asian value theory: the Confucians and the Mohists appear separately here precisely because they part widely on the question of standpoint.

16. The Six-Slot Ledger of Boundaries and Destinations

This registers where the machine did not go on. And identities have to be separated first. Calling all of it remainder costs the word its precision. Every construct has a remainder, that much the methodology establishes — and what was not written on is more than remainder alone. Six slots.

Slot one — the remainder this construct left: whether another bearer can hold separately. The people by the river dredged it, stopped the sand-mining, repaired the embankment. What was judged is that those undertakings do not entail their sources having merged, because each source is anchored in him and crossing pointings is not merging. What was not judged — and expressly so — is whether another bearer can hold under other conditions; and even if one could, that would not mean the original people's sources were swallowed by it. That is an express reservation and also a remainder. All this series' source-position, constitutive and running predicates take an already-holding bearer as their subject. The domain of bearers gives who can bear end-value, not how a new bearer comes about; the type-transition from several subjects or a relational structure to a new bearer has no corresponding occurrence-predicate in the seven essays. And this is not an accidentally omitted criterion: it exposes that the machine's input types lack a transition mechanism. Force the existing predicates onto that transition and you must first make the not-yet-holding bearer the subject of those predicates, and the argument is circular. That failure to absorb, caused by the input types themselves, is why it is listed as a remainder. Two things do not follow: it does not mean a third person cannot describe the conditions of a new bearer's formation — describing conditions and performing constitution are two things, and the second bar forbids only the latter; and it does not prejudge whether a relation can be a cause or condition in some such holding, which was expressly left unjudged.

Slot two — objects adjacent in jurisdiction, never raised as questions. Two of them. Institutions. The sixth essay wrote that things done together, rules made together, things kept together are not wrong by virtue of being common, and gave a condition for when a common content becomes an external ruler. That is a condition for judging whether it oversteps, not an account of what an institution is; the series never raised that as its own question, and even mentioning it was incidental. Incidentally shown and never raised is not the same as expressly unjudged: the former was never even asked, so it is not a reservation and not a remainder — it is an adjacent object. Whoever takes it up should take up not how are institutions possible in that width, but the segment this series showed: under what conditions do common rules, common decisions and common arrangements acquire institutional structure. Fraser's side, tying misrecognition to institutionalized cultural value patterns, is the nearest ready material — that says where material is, not who the question is handed to. The cross-subject informational basis of public evaluation. Sen showed the other, and it is far wider than a single quantity: what welfare, utility, capability, resources, health, opportunity and consequences each have as subjects; which can be jointly checked; which can form partial comparisons or public orderings; why they do not thereby flow back into personal value-standing; and where the force comes from when a public evaluation acquires force in action or institutions. Also an adjacent object, not a remainder. And its destination is deliberately not written — writing a destination is opening a debt, and this essay opens none.

Slot three — a limit-conclusion already reached: the third person has no external threshold at a subject-to-be. A baby who cannot yet say what he wants has a source of value not mine to give, and how far the concrete value-contents under his name have got is not judged by whether he can speak. That is often read as the series owing a ruler here. It is not. The same passage gave a threshold — he cannot yet be the first-person avowing party of that content, because the 15DD row is not yet actually running inside him — and that threshold gives the domain of definition of that one content, not a general threshold for all a subject-to-be's contents. A ruler is wanted for a different question: how far has that row's running got. And on that, the series' verdict is not not given but cannot be given, and it has already been given. Avowal can occur in a moment or take shape by degrees over years, and length of time does not decide it; and there is no set of external signatures both necessary and sufficient and portable to someone else. Together: the third person has no external threshold by which to finally determine how far a value-content has come to hold in a subject-to-be. That is a negative conclusion already reached, not a gap waiting to be filled. It stops the theory going further in that direction, and that is a result of the theory, not a hole in it. This slot and the first are not one question: the first asks whether a new bearer holds — a type-transition, ontology and occurrence; this one asks when some running of a subject-to-be already inside the domain reaches a state — epistemic authority. Both expose the one limit that external reading cannot perform first-person structure, and one may not merge them further than that.

Slot four — a research candidate this essay proposes: the developmental history of a subject-to-be's first-person running. Alongside that established boundary: how a subject-to-be's first-person running gradually becomes operable, and whether that stretch can be described separately. It is this essay's suggestion, not a boundary the series left and not a remainder. Anyone writing it must first set one line in front: such a description must not turn into an external procedure for certifying that at this step a value-content counts as holding. Cross that line and it falls back on the side the series has already judged. The three ledgers above are that line's practical use: the series says which relational places and channels can enter audit, and says the third person's judgment may not perform the first-person constituting nor be upgraded into final certification.

Slot five — handovers whose address is already fixed. The whole branch of action went to the theory of action: how an order of action is formed, executed and looked back on, and how judgment, habit, hesitation and capacity enter it — judgment among them, a term occurring zero times in the seven essays and never raised as an independent mechanism. How a content goes on being borne by one and the same life went to the theory of meaning, handed over in two places. Direction-value goes to power theory, routed out from the prequel onward; value theory's only object is end-value. How the boundary between two subjects is contested goes to rights theory, where the boundary at a meeting and two modalities of handling were already raised. Addressed is not completed. This essay only registers addresses; it does not perform acceptance on the receiving series' behalf.

Slot six — an object-level open question that came to light on looking back: what relation remains between value-standings. Value-standings take no common external ruler, and better, worse and equal have been excluded. Whether it further holds that no comparison relation whatever obtains between two value-standings, or whether some non-metric relation is allowed, the object-level text has never judged. And it cannot be answered by pointing at conditions and consequences in the world being jointly checkable. This essay registers the unjudged place and does not take an answer for it.

17. A Forward Assignment Is a Debt

Why this essay only registers and never promises: the reason is in the series' own record, and the record concerns this essay.

What this section raises is not an object-level norm; it does not say what a person ought to do. It is a discipline of publication: how a pointing written into published text is settled afterwards. Object-level normative force is not drawn on still holds here.

A forward assignment is: published text, in a definite tone, handing a specific unfinished piece of work to an already-named later paper, series or theoretical position, and settling that paper's range by that handover. Adjacent objects, limit-conclusions already reached, research candidates and registered unjudged places do not thereby become forward assignments. Of the six slots, only slot five's four handovers are forward assignments; the other five slots contain not one.

A forward assignment is an account that must be publicly settled, and settlement takes three routes. Redemption: that paper really gets written and does the work. Public reassignment: later text explains that the work changed destination, and why. Public cancellation: explaining that the question has been dissolved by later work, or was wrongly asked, with reasons. Settling in parts is a combination of the three, not a fourth kind. And whether an account is settled is judged not by which kind of file it is written in, but by whether it enters the formal publication chain — whether a reader can find it in official text or public errata. A public version note counts; an internal editorial record does not, because the reader cannot find it, and on paper the account is still outstanding.

This piece is itself one such account. The prequel wrote: how value moves toward action is left to the prospect essay. The first essay wrote the same thing more broadly. The second wrote: how an avowed value-content moves toward action is the entrance to the prospect essay. The third wrote the same. Four essays pointed at one piece of work, addressed to the prospect essay. The fourth wrote the same sentence at the same place with the address changed — the entrance to the theory of action — differing from the third by three words, and the word prospect never appears in it again, with no sentence explaining the relation. What appeared there was an address fork, not a completed reassignment. By the rule above, public reassignment must explain that the work changed destination and why; the fourth did not, it simply wrote on at the new address. Then the fifth expanded the action branch, and the sixth handed the carrying-on of a life to the theory of meaning without explaining its relation to the old address. The new architecture took shape while old and new addresses coexisted unsettled.

This piece is that account's settlement place, by the second route. The work has been reassigned: one stretch to the theory of action from the fourth essay on and expanded by the fifth; one stretch to the theory of meaning by the fifth and sixth. The forward assignments in existing text pointing at the prospect essay are settled here. Settling is not inheriting the name. A forward assignment points at a piece of work, not at a permanent bibliographic type locked in for a future product. That work has been wholly reassigned along two routes — the forming and executing of action to the theory of action, the carrying-on by one life to the theory of meaning — and this piece takes on a different, meta-level task the old assignment never specified: standing outside the seven, stating what the machine is, interfacing with existing traditions, and registering boundaries and destinations. The prospect essay is therefore this piece's historical alias, not its place in the series.

And so this piece opens not one new debt. The second item in slot two deliberately has no destination written, precisely to hold this line: hand an unraised object to some series in passing, and this piece would open its own first account on the same page where it sets the rule. What matters most about an essay that lays down accounting rules is not how well it states them. It is whether it follows them itself. So no promises are made. The registrations in slots one to four and six are not commitments about future writing: if they are later written, the later text need not cite this piece as warrant; if they are never written, the series owes nothing. Slot five is the exception — those four are forward assignments already written into existing text, addressed, and still to be settled by redemption, public reassignment or public cancellation.

18. Closing

The object level of value theory ends here.

The prequel cleared the referential space and said what value is not. Six essays then raised a machine for reading value, and it is not one principle unfolded six times: it records three ledgers — constitutive, running, action-and-relation — each with its own subjects. The two no-entry lines are the chief reason the six cannot be read as one: readings do not by themselves flow back into sources and standings, and external conditions do not by themselves perform first-person constituting.

Put on the map of existing value theory, it parts from eight traditions each on its own line, and is not speaking on the same ground as seven others. The innermost line is this: is a particular end-value content's standing under some bearer's name constituted by his first-person avowal, or explained by a fittingness, a reason-relation or an objective rank independent of actual avowal. That line governs only the standing of particular contents; it does not extend to all value facts.

The interface with Kant meets at one negative mark: not replaceable by an equivalent. The meeting is real, and sharing a mark is not conceptual identity — it is a negative mark, not a complete constitutive account of dignity.

And where the machine stops cannot all be called remainder. Six slots: one remainder this construct left; two objects adjacent in jurisdiction never raised as questions; one limit-conclusion already reached; one research candidate this essay proposes; four handovers with fixed addresses; and one object-level question that came to light on looking back — what relation remains between value-standings.

Closing a machine is not calling everything beside it an opening, and not saying one more sentence on its behalf that it never said. The whole work of this piece is to say what kind of machine it is, to say where it parts from other people's machines, and then to register what it did not say — as not said, each under its own identity.
