The Tripartite Soul and the Chain of Becoming
From the City Back to the Soul
Once the city has been constructed, Socrates looks for its four virtues. Wisdom belongs chiefly to its rulers, courage to its guardians, and moderation runs through all classes as agreement about who should rule. Justice turns out to have been present from the beginning: each person does the work that belongs to that person and does not interfere with another's.
If the city has three classes, Socrates asks, does the individual soul contain corresponding parts? Before dividing it, he states a careful principle: the same thing cannot do or undergo opposites, in the same respect, toward the same object, at the same time. A spinning top does not violate the principle, because its axis is still while its circumference moves.
Thirst supplies two parts. Thirst as thirst wants to drink, yet a thirsty person can refuse. Desire and the rational element must therefore be distinguishable. A third part emerges through the story of Leontius. Passing executed bodies, he wants to look and is disgusted by the desire. At last he runs toward them, opens his eyes, and curses them: “Look, you wretches; take your fill of the beautiful sight.” His anger is neither the desire to look nor the reason that resists. In this instance it allies with reason against appetite.
Plato's achievement remains vivid. Conflict is not merely hesitation. Different demands coexist within one person, form alliances, and win or lose. Leontius loses and knows that he has lost. The shame matters because the defeated and the victor still belong to the same self.
A Table and a Chain
Plato gives us a table: reason, spirit, appetite, each with a role and a proper relation of rule. A table is powerful because its entries can be inspected separately. It can be applied to new cases without replaying the whole derivation. That portability helps explain the model's endurance.
SAE offers a chain rather than a table. Cognition begins with a cut that establishes something while leaving an uncollected remainder. Each subsequent level emerges by making another cut into what the previous one left. The order is therefore constitutive. Rearranging two stages does not merely reorganize a list; it destroys the claimed derivation because the later stage is generated from the earlier remainder.
The contrast is not finite versus infinite. The SAE chain has sixteen articulated levels. The difference is provenance. A table's entries are listed; a chain's links arise in sequence.
We recognize both ways of knowing a person. A profile might say: tall, impatient, loyal, fond of chess. A narrative might say that after a childhood event and a later encounter, the person stopped speaking with certainty. Shuffle the profile and it remains a profile. Shuffle the history and it no longer explains. Tables identify; sequences help us understand.
Rule or Non-Acceptance
Plato's rational part should rule appetite, with spirit as its ally. Rule is active: restrain, command, prevent disorder. SAE describes the higher layer's relation to a lower proposal differently. It does not say, “You may not send this.” It says, “I do not accept it.”
The difference affects the account. Suppression treats the appetite as an enemy requiring continuous force. Non-acceptance leaves it present as an unadopted proposal. Hunger can still speak and return later; this action simply does not enact it. One model organizes victory and defeat, the other reception and refusal.
Plato nevertheless possesses something the chain needs: a principle of unity. Justice within the person binds the parts together, “becoming one out of many” before action. The table is drawn on one sheet; its elements are already enclosed within the same soul.
Plato's Question Back to SAE
What makes a developmental chain one person? If each cut is contingent and the subject may stop, why is a cut made after a long interval the continuation of the earlier chain? Sequential derivation connects adjacent stages, but a life contains interruption, forgetting, sleep, trauma, and revision. Who performs the work of becoming one out of many?
Plato can locate that work in the properly ordered soul. SAE resists an internal sovereign who must unify everything by rule. Yet without some account of continuity, the chain risks explaining how one stage can follow another without explaining why the sequence belongs to a single “I.”
Leontius keeps the question concrete. He covers his eyes, fights himself, then runs toward the bodies and curses the eyes that won. Plato's model was built beside a case of failure, not ideal harmony. Its enduring force comes from recognizing that every voice in the struggle is mine—even the voice I refuse and the act I regret.
