The Invisible Man Goes Unquestioned

Han Qin (秦汉)

Glaucon Makes the Other Side Stronger

At the end of Book I, Thrasymachus has been silenced. At the beginning of Book II, Glaucon refuses to let the argument end. He does something philosophically rare: he rebuilds the position he wants Socrates to defeat and makes it stronger than its advocate did.

On this account, injustice without punishment is best, suffering injustice without redress is worst, and justice is the compromise of people too weak to secure the first or escape the second. Law is an agreement not to harm or be harmed. No one chooses justice for itself; people comply because they lack the power not to.

The Ring of Gyges tests the premise. A shepherd discovers a ring that makes him invisible when turned inward. Once he confirms its power, he enters the court, seduces the queen, kills the king, and takes the throne. Give one ring to a just person and another to an unjust person, Glaucon says, and their conduct will converge. Remove observation and justice disappears.

He sharpens the test further. Strip the just person of every reputation for justice and let him be punished as the worst criminal. Give the unjust person perfect public esteem. Which life is better? Adeimantus adds that adults already teach children to value the rewards and reputation of justice rather than justice itself. Glaucon removes the watcher; Adeimantus shows that moral education has always trained us to manage the watcher.

What Invisibility Removes

The obvious answer is punishment. SAE looks earlier. The ring removes being questioned.

Action normally arrives with a story one tells oneself. That story may seem adequate until another person asks, “Why?” Then it must stand, be repaired, or be acknowledged as incomplete. The exchange is ordinary enough to be invisible, but it keeps reasons from becoming private facts.

Without the question, a weak justification does not collapse. It sinks. Like an object moved from a desk into a drawer, it remains present while ceasing to obstruct the next action. The second act requires less explanation; the third feels natural. What compounds is not the number of wrong acts but the lowering of the threshold.

The experience can feel like competence. Hesitation diminishes, decisions become efficient, and what once required argument becomes “how things are done.” At an empty intersection, the first red light crossed produces a shock; the next produces less; eventually the intersection has not changed, but the driver no longer experiences a question.

Why Self-Examination Cannot Guarantee the Audit

The ring does not eliminate self-questioning. The shepherd can still ask himself what he is doing. The problem is that his questions and answers use the same standards whose threshold is shifting. Looking backward, he sees a sequence of increasingly smooth actions. Smoothness is the symptom, yet to him it appears as confirmation.

The structure is not uniquely moral. A person practicing a craft alone can repeat a defect until it becomes “feel.” Effort continues and fluency increases, but no teacher or peer interrupts the error. The invisible person is someone who no longer has a teacher.

This is a diagnosis, not a command to submit to every question. SAE does not infer that others acquire authority over a person's self-legislation. It says only that refusing all external contact has a cost, and that self-examination cannot insure itself against every blind spot.

Glaucon's Hard Reply

Glaucon can ask where the alleged damage exists. Imagine a perfectly invisible person who is never challenged, never feels conflict, and remains satisfied to the end. If he cannot perceive the decaying account and no observer can see him, who identifies the decay?

The framework also seems least useful where it is most needed. The shepherd will not hear it. A person already open to questioning already practices what it recommends. And if the “debt” has no creditor, deadline, or experienced loss, how does it differ from saying that a god sees what human beings do not?

SAE cannot answer by smuggling the divine watcher back into the ring. It can point to a structural loss—the conversion of revisable reasons into unexamined ground—but the Gyges case asks whether a purely structural loss matters when it never appears for anyone. That question remains.

The smallest gesture in the story is the most consequential. The shepherd does not announce a rebellion against morality. He idly turns a ring inward while sitting among colleagues. From that moment, no one can address his reasons. Catastrophic isolation begins as a movement too slight to feel like a decision.
