Why Knowing Is Not Enough
Has the Inquiry Reached Its End?
At the opening of the final chapter of the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle asks whether the project is complete. Virtue, friendship, pleasure, and happiness have been treated in outline. Is that the end?
The answer is built into the contrast that follows. In practical matters, the aim is not to contemplate and understand each item but to do it. With virtue, knowledge is insufficient; we must try to possess and exercise virtue or find some other way of becoming good.
Aristotle then tests the power of argument. If arguments by themselves could make people good, they would deserve enormous rewards. In fact they can encourage generous young people and help a well-disposed character become possessed by what is noble. They cannot turn the many toward goodness.
The diagnosis is unsentimental. Many people respond not to shame at what is base but to fear of punishment. They pursue familiar pleasures and avoid pains; having never tasted what is noble, they do not even possess the relevant attraction. What argument could remodel a character formed in that way?
At this point, the book changes direction.
A Fact About Means
Aristotle is not merely insulting the unreceptive. He treats their condition as a fact about method. If the audience is moved by fear rather than reason, more elegant reasoning will not solve the problem. Habits planted over years are not easily removed by a sentence.
He therefore reopens the question of formation. People are said to become good by nature, habituation, or teaching. Nature is not in our control and belongs only to the genuinely fortunate. Teaching does not work on everyone; the learner's soul must already have been prepared by habits, like soil capable of nourishing seed.
Law enters because habit needs structure and because most people obey necessity more readily than argument. Upbringing must be ordered from youth and sustained through adult life. The command of a parent lacks the force of law, while law combines compulsion with a form of practical reason.
This transition is philosophically decisive. Aristotle does not take the insufficiency of argument as a reason to abandon reason. He searches for institutions capable of forming the conditions under which reason can later be heard.
A Book That Hands Itself Over
SAE's critical project ends with a different gesture. Its claims are placed under continuing review. The rules of writing are made explicit so that readers can locate violations. No argument receives a permanent license; grounds and revisable points remain visible. The court stays open because the present question has not yet been asked by every later person who may encounter it.
Both works refuse to identify “said” with “done.” Aristotle's conclusion says that understanding virtue is not virtue. SAE says that a framework's validity cannot be secured by its own declaration; readers and later reviewers participate in settlement.
The difference appears immediately after the diagnosis. Aristotle turns outward from argument to habituation, law, and legislation. SAE's handoff remains largely within reason-giving: expose the premises, arm the reader, invite objection, preserve revisability.
One project discovers that argument is not self-sufficient and looks for another kind of force. The other builds its final hope around argument becoming answerable to more argument.
Lowering the Cost Is Not Supplying the Motive
SAE does not lack failure conditions. A claim transported across too many contexts without an address accumulates liabilities. An account isolated from external review can compound its blind spots. The framework also explains why self-questioning cannot substitute completely for another perspective.
It has therefore done substantial work to lower the cost of participation. The rules are visible. The status of the questioner does not decide the quality of the question. A group can share judgment through public procedure. The reader is given handles by which to challenge the text.
None of these arrangements makes a reader arrive.
Reducing the threshold and generating motivation are different achievements. An office can publish an exemplary draft, document every assumption, and request review. No one responds. The silence does not prove the document was poor; it may occupy a system in which no incentive, time, norm, or relation protects the act of reading.
SAE deliberately denies that an unfinished remainder compels the next step. There is always somewhere else to cut, but no gap forces a person to continue. That restraint protects agency. It also means that the framework's own final review depends on an action it cannot guarantee.
From Ethics to Politics
Aristotle does more than append “law matters.” He follows the problem through private and public education to the competence of the legislator. Politicians possess experience but do not reliably articulate or transmit it. Sophists claim to teach politics while misunderstanding its object. Collections of laws are useful only to readers already capable of judging them.
The final sentences therefore announce a new inquiry into constitutions: what preserves and destroys them, what arrangements are best, and what laws and customs they require. The Ethics ends by converting an unresolved dependency into a program of political study.
This does not settle the moral dangers of coercive formation. Who writes the law? Whose virtue is imposed? Which lives are excluded from citizenship? Aristotle's own political world makes these questions unavoidable. But he has identified a debt that cannot be paid by another chapter of ethical explanation alone.
SAE should preserve the same pressure. If external review is indispensable, an account of open procedure is not yet an account of the practices, institutions, and motives that sustain reviewers. The missing reader is not a minor implementation issue. The validity structure depends on someone taking up the invitation.
Thirteen Essays, All on One Side
This series has placed thirteen questions from Aristotle beside SAE. It has clarified agreements, marked divergences, and let each framework expose debts in the other. By Aristotle's distinction, all of that remains on the side of seeing and understanding. None of it guarantees the formation of a good person or the arrival of a serious respondent.
That does not make argument useless. Aristotle denies its independence, not its value. Argument can move a receptive person, articulate what practice aims at, and help law become more than naked force. SAE likewise needs reasons in public if review is to be more than power answering power.
The final question is therefore not whether reason works. It is whether reason works alone. Aristotle says no and turns toward politics. SAE says its own effect must be settled by others, then waits for others who remain free not to come.
These essays are arguments. Whether they are self-sufficient cannot, by their own rule, be decided here.
