Edition note: Independently rewritten for English-language readers from the Chinese essay’s argument and close reading. Full-book spoilers.
The Town is more than houses behind a wall. It has a complete circulation system for the human parts it rejects.
Residents surrender their hearts. Golden beasts carry that unwanted material, die in winter, and leave skulls filled with “old dreams.” The skulls enter the library. Dreamreaders place their hands on them and dissolve what remains. Hearts that cannot be fully removed produce residents sent to the Woods. Other such people are kept at the margins and used to maintain the power station.
Each stage is orderly. The beasts are tended. Dreamreading is respected work with housing, schedule, and an assistant. The Woods sit within the wall. No single procedure appears spectacularly cruel.
Together they form an exact apparatus: extraction, transport, seasonal disposal, archival residue, final erasure, and management of incomplete cases. The narrator is not merely reading mysterious dreams. Without knowing it, he performs the last step by which the Town prevents discarded hearts from returning.
The Town has not eliminated the heart. It has renamed the heart as waste, then made the people who can no longer see that waste the evidence that the system works.
If success is measured by resident satisfaction, the Town succeeds. People are fed, sheltered, civil, and unafraid of death. They do not quarrel or lie awake in anxiety. The arrangement fails only according to a measure its residents no longer possess.
The wall is perfect—without crack, passable gate, or even safe air above it. It is not defending inhabitants from enemies. Its function is to ensure that the choice made at admission cannot later be revised.
The system’s power does not lie mainly in force. It lies in reorganizing the person so that stability and goodness appear identical. What causes restlessness, attachment, grief, and protest has been removed; the resulting calm then serves as proof that removal was wise.
The shadow weakens in confinement while the narrator forgets. Their two deadlines converge. One will lose the strength to escape; the other will lose the memory that escape matters.
Murakami’s Town is disturbing precisely because it does not feel damaged from within. A visibly miserable society would generate its own evidence against itself. This one externalizes the evidence into dying beasts, unreadable skulls, fading shadows, and forest residents officially classified as incomplete.
Only the waste stream reveals the cost of the finished product.
