A Dance I Cannot Finish Alone

A partner takes an unexpected half-step. Following it can make a beautiful dance. It does not, by itself, tell us how one person regards the other.

Han Qin (秦汉秦汉秦漢) ·

At the turn in a familiar dance, he takes an extra half-step to the right. She does not pull him back to the rehearsed position. She follows the opening and makes a turn they have never practiced. When the music ends, both laugh.

This resembles what we like about cooperation. Two people do not simply complete separate movements and add up the results. Each next step answers the other's. What emerges could not have been fully written in advance by either person alone.

Does the successful turn prove that they respect one another? Not yet. Someone treating a partner as a useful instrument can also be very good at adapting to that partner's movements. A lovely dance gives us less evidence about their relationship than we might wish.

First distinguish what happened. The music, steps, and agreement to dance settle much of the situation. They do not settle this half-step. Seeing how it could be received is her judgment. Anticipating his direction supplies material for that judgment; actually turning is a subsequent action. Those events can happen almost together without becoming the same thing.

His step must still be his

In competition, your next move is something I try to beat. In cooperation, it belongs to something we are trying to make together. The difference concerns how the shared activity can succeed, not whether cooperative people are morally better.

A duet cannot consist of my playing beautifully while the other instrument supplies an unchanging background. A shared jigsaw need not reduce you to pressing down pieces whose positions I have already assigned. Cooperation offers another possibility: you notice and respond for yourself, and what you contribute can meet what I contribute.

Division of labor does not automatically remove that possibility. Neither does a rehearsed arrangement require every movement to be negotiated again. The question arises when the actual you differs from my expectation: do I adjust only to obtain my desired effect, or can what you do also correct my understanding of you?

These adjustments can look alike from outside. Synchronization and a shared smile do not settle which occurred. Coordination makes room for an encounter; it does not certify the encounter. We should not turn a successful performance into a character reference for its performers.

Having a goal of my own is compatible with recognizing you. I can want the dance to go well and still acknowledge your judgment as yours. The issue is not whether I have a purpose, but whether that purpose absorbs everything about the person beside me.

The reverse shortcut fails too: discovering an instrumental attitude does not automatically mean that cooperation has ceased. Someone may still need a partner's judgment and actual response. How the activity works and how its participants regard one another are separate questions. Relabeling the activity cannot do the second inquiry for us.

Team sports put several relationships on one field: cooperation within a team, competition between teams. Those are arrangements of the activity. Appreciating an opponent's good move concerns how I meet that person. Respect does not turn the contest into a cooperative structure; calling a group a team does not guarantee that everyone in it is treated as a partner.

You are not material for my moral improvement

There is something worth practicing here. The difficulty begins when I make recognizing you a project I must complete today.

One obstacle faces outward. If I recruit you as material for my exercise in respecting people, I am still asking you to serve my development. I say that you should be free to become yourself, but the result I am impatient to inspect is whether I have become a better person.

The other obstacle faces inward. I cannot ensure sincere recognition by ordering myself to produce it immediately. A determined intention may be admirable in its own way. Its intensity does not establish that the relationship I intend has already arrived.

This does not make the wish to practice a contaminant. I can join a game hoping to become better at coordination and genuinely play it. My intention on entering and my way of meeting the partner now are different questions. The intention neither abolishes play nor supplies evidence that I already recognize the person before me.

We can do quite a lot without demanding the result: make time, choose something both people want, permit refusal, changes, and stopping. When a response does not fit, we need not settle the other person's character immediately. These are conditions in which something good may happen, not instructions commanding it to happen. What remains afterward belongs to a further inquiry.

An adult arranging a cooperative game for children can acknowledge an educational intention. But willingness, suitability, and timing cannot all be answered on the children's behalf. A discovery the child actually makes is the child's. This does not deny the organizer's contribution. It prevents that contribution from becoming ownership of someone else's response.

Leaving room is not withholding a sentence until the child supplies the prescribed answer. It must accommodate a different response, no response, or no wish to play today. The organizer can adjust conditions to the actual child rather than turn the missing ideal response into another assignment the child has failed.

Workplace team-building introduces another arrangement. Someone required to attend is meeting a work demand. There may also be play, but the obligation should not disappear beneath an announcement that everyone is voluntarily having fun. The event's name cannot answer for the person who cannot refuse it.

Consider an adult letting a child win at chess. An openly agreed handicap establishes different rules: both know the game they have entered. Secretly arranging a win raises another question. Has the adult assigned an achievement to the child that the adult actually engineered? The source paper leaves questions about the boundary of play unresolved here; it does not classify every concealed concession in advance. That uncertainty does not make the question of speaking for the child disappear.

Worthwhile is not the same as obligatory. Disliking cooperative games establishes no deficiency of regard; coordinating well proves no virtue. This is not a ladder toward a superior personality, still less a reason to recruit another person to help me climb it.

The reader in the other chair

Another kind of response crosses a page. A novelist sits alone, but moves between two positions: writing the sentence and provisionally reading it as someone who knows only what the story has disclosed.

Suppose a nephew earlier claimed never to have entered a study. Later, while searching for a will, he reaches toward the second drawer on the right before asking where the will is kept. The author intended a helpful action. From the reading position another possibility appears: perhaps he already knows this room.

Noticing that the same passage permits this reading is the author's judgment. Whether readers will consequently guess the culprit is a prediction; softening the sentence is an action. The example establishes neither that the nephew lied nor that he committed the crime. It identifies a possible reading that the author's first intention did not contain.

The imagined reader is not another person already present at the desk. The author is occupying both positions. Nevertheless, language and disclosure are being organized toward someone else's reading before a real reader arrives. This is why the series discusses writing alongside telling and listening rather than simply classifying it as solitary play. Exactly when writing constitutes a completed cooperative game remains unresolved. A diary addressed only to one's future self remains a difficult case too.

An actual reader changes the situation. Where that person pauses, and what possibility they notice, is their judgment. Departing from the author's expectation does not make it any less theirs. The author can provide clues and room without using an imagined reader to complete the real reader's act in advance.

Detective fiction often makes concealment and discovery an explicit contest within a shared story: we enter together, while one side tries to hide and the other to find. Competition sits inside cooperation. A performance, film, or novel also offers more than a finished feeling to collect. A live performance can respond to its audience in turn. Watching sport, however, remains participation in the match's competitive or mixed arrangement; not all watching has the same structure.

I can hope you will notice what I planted without declaring that you failed to read when you take another route. Your reading may make me notice my sentence differently. The person who first arranged the material need not remain permanently on the giving side.

Feeling for a character also belongs to the reader. An author who wept while writing cannot perform the reader's response in advance. Someone may be moved elsewhere or not cry at all; the visible result is no certificate of character. Entering a work together does not mean that it has already assigned everyone's feelings.

These encounters may leave us better able to meet another person's contribution. They may leave no stable change. Persistence and transfer into life need examination of their own. The modest claim concerns what was actually discovered and answered here, rather than treating task completion as the whole event.

The music will reach another beat. I cannot finish your part of the dance, and I need not turn this dance into proof that I have learned to respect you. Your half-step can remain yours. My next step can begin by finding how to meet it.
