At the close, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both reached fresh all-time highs, each gaining roughly 0.7%. The Dow added 0.5%. The Russell 2000 slipped 0.6%. Oil gave back most of yesterday's surge — WTI settled at $102.27, down about 4%, with Brent at $109.87 falling in step. XLE was essentially flat at $59.55. The US confirmed the Iran ceasefire remains in effect; one ship transited the Strait of Hormuz today. The Secretary of State declared combat operations dating back to February officially concluded, with the focus now shifting to reopening the strait.
The most notable thing today is not the direction of the move but the juxtaposition of two facts: the S&P 500 printed a record high, and at the same time, US officials acknowledged that Iran has launched more than ten attacks on American forces since the ceasefire took effect — while only a single vessel has been allowed through Hormuz. The market's understanding has filed both facts in the same drawer. The gap is visible, but it has gone unfilled for more than thirty consecutive trading days. It is real, yet there is no expression vehicle that can convert within a reasonable timeframe. Clarity remains at 5.
The two secondary gaps — VIX compression and the oil-XLE divergence — showed no change today. Palantir fell 3% despite a significant earnings beat, a small hint that AI valuations are fully priced in, but a single name is too narrow to build a position around.
