Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument for English-language readers. Plot claims have been checked and interpretive claims are marked as such.
James first finds Eddie vomiting in an apartment bathroom. A corpse lies nearby. Before James has accused him of anything, Eddie insists that he did not do it.
Eddie appears elsewhere, including the bowling alley, but three scenes develop the denial most clearly. In the apartment he is sick and frightened. In the prison cafeteria he sits near a body shot through the head and speaks almost casually about how easy killing would be, then withdraws the admission. In the meat locker he explains the lifetime of ridicule that taught him to expect contempt from every face.
The humiliation is real. So is the violence Eddie commits. His disaster is the rule that only one of those facts may belong to his account of himself.
Eddie’s bearable identity is “the person everyone bullied.” He did not invent that history. People mocked his body and treated him as available for amusement. The identity protects a truth that no one else protected for him.
But if the man he shot, the dog he killed, and the bodies around him enter the same record, victimhood can no longer describe everything he is. Eddie has no second account ready. Each new act must therefore remain outside the only self he knows how to defend.
Denial becomes self-reinforcing. Violence is excluded because it conflicts with the identity; the preserved identity makes later violence easier to justify; each act then becomes further evidence that everyone is persecuting him.
A genuine grievance can become more durable than a lie. A lie may be disproved. The grievance remains true, so Eddie uses its truth to shelter conclusions that do not follow from it.
Angela’s error moves in the opposite direction. Her father abused her. A newspaper clipping establishes that she later killed him; the game does not issue a legal finding of self-defense, though the history makes the act intelligible as resistance after prolonged abuse.
Angela searches Silent Hill for her mother—the same mother who told her that she deserved what happened.
That sentence has the authority of an early world. A child first learns what she is from a very small number of people. When both parents give versions that make the abuse belong to the child, she may have no competing account from which to reject them.
Angela therefore carries a debt she did not incur. Worse, she still seeks the person who confirmed it. This is not irrational in the simple sense. If one person helped author your earliest reality, returning to that person can feel like the only imaginable route to a revision.
On the burning staircase, Angela momentarily mistakes James for her mother. The person she seeks and the person she fears occupy the same position.
James tries to intervene, but he cannot give Angela a convincing “it was not your fault.” He has not yet spoken the corresponding truth about himself.
This is not because people must be innocent before helping anyone else. It is because James is still maintaining an account in which Mary died three years earlier from illness. He cannot offer another person a stable relation between action and responsibility while falsifying that relation at the center of his own life.
Angela walks upward through fire. The scene does not turn James’s failure into the cause of her fate. She is not his rescue project. His inability to save her reveals something about him; it does not make her story his.
Eddie pushes out what belongs to him. Angela takes in what does not. Their movements are opposite, but both detach identity from what each person actually did.
Eddie’s outside verdict sounds favorable: you are the victim. Angela’s sounds damning: you deserved it. Neither can revise the verdict when reality contradicts it, because neither authored it through an honest reckoning with action.
James uses a third method. Mary died by his hand not long before his arrival—the original leaves the exact interval uncertain—yet he lives inside the claim that illness killed her three years ago. Instead of accepting or rejecting an entry, he relocates the event to a place where no entry seems necessary.
His next construction is more elaborate still. He gives himself an executioner.
Based on Team Silent and Konami’s 2001 Silent Hill 2 and its later expanded edition, not the 2024 remake. Eddie also appears at Pete’s Bowl-O-Rama; this essay follows the three encounters that develop his denial most directly. Full spoilers throughout.
