Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument for English-language readers. Plot claims have been checked and interpretive claims are marked as such.
Sam carries a pod against his chest. Inside its amber fluid floats an infant, tethered by a cord. When Sam falls, the baby cries. When he cradles the pod and rocks it gently, the crying stops.
It has a designation: BB-28.
A Bridge Baby is removed from a brain-dead “stillmother” and maintained in an artificial womb that simulates her uterus. Existing on the threshold between life and death, the BB allows a connected porter to perceive the Beached Things that living eyes cannot ordinarily see.
The game does not present the being in the pod as abstract energy. It gives us a face, a cry, an umbilical connection, and a recognizable stage of human development. At the same time, Bridges classifies it as equipment.
Those facts can coexist. An institution does not have to deny that the organism is a baby in order to prescribe an entirely instrumental relationship to it. Deadman tells Sam not to become attached. A BB is a tool, he insists, and a defective tool can be replaced.
The coldest part is not that nobody can see what is inside the pod. It is that people can see perfectly well and become practiced at placing what they see under a different heading.
Do not give it a name. Do not become attached.
These instructions do not police belief so much as conduct. What will Sam call the baby? Will he comfort it after a fall? When he looks down, will he see a serial number or somebody looking back?
That makes the procedure harder to defeat than the claim that a BB is not human. Definitions can be disputed. Procedures are repeated. The operator does not have to believe a lie; he only has to complete the handoff, perform the calibration, and accept decommissioning as routine.
A tool does not cry when its user falls. Once the “tool” does cry, maintaining the classification requires a human being to train himself not to answer.
BB-28 does not remain unchanged. Continued connection with Sam brings weight gain, increased brain activity, accumulating memories, and a stronger orientation toward the world of the living. Deadman eventually describes the development in terms of self-awareness.
This does not establish a universal rule by which every BB automatically stops functioning at the same threshold. It gives us something more particular: this baby is exceeding the use designed for it.
Bridge Babies already have a short operational life, roughly a year, after which standard procedure calls for decommissioning and incineration. Replacement and disposal are not accidental failures at the edge of the system. They belong to its normal operation. Growth, memory, and attachment are not maintenance goals; they make it increasingly difficult to preserve the category of equipment.
Sometimes what a system calls malfunction is simply a life refusing to remain where its use has placed it.
The argument would be easy if Bridge Babies were merely the invention of villains who enjoyed cruelty.
Without a BB, a porter is far less able to detect BTs. Crossing dangerous territory becomes harder; rebuilding a national network exacts a greater cost. BB-28 protects Sam, and through him may protect many of the people his deliveries sustain.
The institution is persuasive precisely because the instrument works. Every report can record benefits. Every sacrifice can be entered in the column labeled “greater losses avoided.” No participant has to take pleasure in harm. They need only agree that no alternative is available.
But saving more people does not make the person being used disappear from the account. Necessity deserves acknowledgment; it does not replace attention to its victim.
Late in the story, Deadman reveals a deeper history. BBs were conceived as catalysts for the chiral network and integrated into the infrastructure of the knot cities. He can only speculate that Amelie herself installed them, but he is clear about the pattern: the network was built through sacrifice after sacrifice.
The game’s “bridges” now take two forms.
There are ladders, roads, and shelters that players leave for one another, enabling strangers to cooperate without demanding repayment. Then there is the BB embedded in infrastructure, allowing some people to connect because another life—unable to consent or withdraw—has been fixed into the interface.
Coverage alone cannot tell us whether a network is good. We also need to ask how it was built, who gets to cross, and who has been sealed into the foundation.
Sam has no position of moral cleanliness from which to denounce the arrangement. He uses BB-28 to survive and to complete the network. He understands the rule and continues the mission.
Death Stranding does not first give him a speech. It gives him repetition. He looks down after a fall. He checks the pod. He rocks the crying baby. Over time he stops speaking to a number and begins speaking to Lou.
None of those gestures abolishes an institution. They alter a smaller fact first: the relation between Sam and BB-28 is no longer simply the relation between operator and equipment.
Large refusals often begin there—not with a perfect declaration from outside the system, but with a person who can no longer use the life before him as if it were a thing.
