Reading The Attorney

Three essays on a commercially minded lawyer with no reason to become a dissident, the familiar face that makes abstraction impossible, and a political trial in which every evidentiary point can be won without changing the verdict.

The Attorney protects its protagonist from retrospective sainthood. Song Woo-seok begins as a self-made practitioner selling routine registration work, proud of wealth earned without elite credentials and dismissive of student activism. That beginning is not an embarrassment to be edited out. It gives his later decisions their weight.

The series follows a change in the object of knowledge. “Political detainees” can remain a category; Park Jin-woo’s injured face cannot. It then asks what advocacy means when proof, procedure, and constitutional language are heard by a court without being allowed to govern it.

Yang Woo-suk’s 2013 film The Attorney. Full-film spoilers throughout.
