Edition note: An independent English rewriting for viewers of Yang Woo-suk’s 2013 film The Attorney. It preserves the Chinese argument while reorganizing its sequence for an English-language essay. Full-film spoilers.
Song Woo-seok stands outside the courthouse handing out business cards for real-estate registration. Other lawyers regard the advertising, low fees, and routine paperwork as a degradation of the profession. Song sees a legal service people need and a market the prestigious firms have ignored.
Song did not attend university. He came through commercial high school and construction work, studied independently, and passed Korea’s notoriously difficult bar examination. The film presents this achievement without false modesty. He knows what he has done and enjoys the money it produces.
His registration practice is not corruption. He uses legal knowledge efficiently during a building boom, treats volume as an advantage, and refuses the profession’s unwritten claim that respectable lawyers should avoid ordinary paperwork.
As a poor student, Song once ate at a soup restaurant and ran because he could not pay. Years later he returns, confesses, and pays the owner. She barely remembers the episode. For him, however, the unpaid meal remained a claim on the person he believed himself to be.
The scene establishes a private form of accountability before the political plot begins. No institution is compelling repayment. Song closes the debt because he does not want success built over an action he has silently exempted.
With his earnings, Song purchases an apartment in a building where he once labored. He finds his name still written on a beam and shows it to his family. The pleasure is not merely possession. He has crossed from the worker who builds another person’s property to the resident who can claim a home inside it.
His belief in individual ascent is grounded in experience. He did study, work, and move upward. This is why he regards demonstrators as wasting opportunity rather than exposing structures.
Song argues with a journalist friend and dismisses student activism. Earn money, build a family, take available chances: those rules worked for him. He has clients, a wife and children, an expanding tax practice, and every incentive to treat authoritarian politics as somebody else’s subject.
The film does not award him advance moral credit. He is not secretly waiting for a cause. If asked to name a lawyer least likely to accept a dangerous political case, his colleagues might reasonably name him.
A principled activist who accepts one more political defendant confirms an established identity. Song’s later choice will disrupt one. He will have to act without the comfort of saying, “This is who I have always been.”
The business card matters because it records the life at stake: practical, earned, prosperous, and politically unromantic. Courage will not complete that life’s original trajectory. It will interrupt it.
